'I wish I'd aborted the son I've spent 47 years caring for'

The pilot had been very patient but, after an hour of the plane waiting on the Tarmac at Heathrow, with my son Stephen refusing to get up off the floor, sit in his seat and buckle up, our bags were removed from the hold and he was carried off the flight, my husband Roy and I walking, hot-cheeked and humiliated, behind.

Our family holiday to Greece would not be going ahead, after all.

And no, Stephen was not an obstreperous toddler when this happened. He was 45 years old. This embarrassing scene happened two years ago and the episode is just one of the many challenges we have faced since Stephen, our second child, was born with Down's Syndrome.

So difficult has it been that I can honestly say I wish he hadn't been born.

1. I would not judge someone who expressed frustration, yet whose record was 45 years of care....

18. Agreed. Never in a million years.

This woman has gone through several dozen lifetimes worth of hells, I am sure.

May she find as much love and forgiveness as she has shown.

You too.

4. The smiley is how I feel

Disabled lives have value, whether she thinks so or not.

So naive.

10. Are you anti-choice? nt.

All liberals are anti-choice because anyone choosing something other than abortion is treated as a criminal.

11. I am not

I simply cannot believe someone would say that about her own son because he has a disability (as do I).

Margaret Sanger would like to have a word with you.

And by "word" I mean "scalpel."

3. Yeah, it's ugly. But so is the world we live in.

And you're the ones making it that way.

7. That poor parent, to feel such frustration in dealing with their child.

Yeah.

That's how we feel having to deal with your DUmbasses.

And you're not even our ow flesh and blood.

So straighten-up while you still can because we got a .223 coat hanger with your name on it.

44. But that is not what that mother is saying.

She is saying she wishes her son had never been born. Not all people with disabilities. Her son. She is commenting on her specific situation.

If she indeed was not told that her son had Downs Syndrome before she gave birth, then that is truly a tragedy. Every mother should have the right to determine for herself if she is capable of devoting her life to a severely disabled child--and whether to go through with the pregnancy or not. We have no right to interfere with that decision. Deciding to abort a fetus testing positive for Downs Syndrome can be and often is the best decision for that woman and her family's quality of life. Sadly, it does not appear she had that choice. I feel sorry for her and her family, including her son. None of them appear to be having much quality of life.

IOW: eugenics always has been and always will be popular with the fascist left

I had a cousin with Down Syndrome. She died a few weeks ago. She was in her 50s.

I'm sure there were some times that things were tough for my aunt, but I'm also sure she'd never wished her daughter away.

I think it depends on the degree of retardation.  Some of them are capable of living a semi-independent life.  A neighbor had to put her adult daughter in a group home.  She was very happy there with other people like herself.

Substitute downs syndrome with homosexual and then let's see how you feel about this again shall we?

DUmmies and liberals want to claim that people are born gay, but they never want a "gay gene" to be identified.

I had a cousin with severe cerebral palsy.  Couldn't do anything unassisted.  Couldn't walk, eat, shower, or shit without help.  His parents cared for him until he died at the age of 43.

I don't think they would have considered it time wasted.

Exactly, because that would make homosexuality a birth defect.

Exactly, because that would make homosexuality a birth defect.

And that would be when they become anti-abortion in some cases.

Of course there is such a gene.

But to claim its discovery would be professional suicide for a scientist.

You selfish, greedy, self-centered assholes.  Loving LIbEralS   :bird:

My sister is Down's Syndrome.  She is 48.  My mother said it at the time and both my parents have always considered her a gift.  She can function on her own, in a loosely supervised group home, up in Northern Illinois.  She has flown numerous times with the parents and likes it, however, I have encountered many severely retarded that do have debilitating anxiety issues and I understand the frustration.

This is a human being, you f***ing rotted human scum. She does have one thing over you ranting, petulant infants .  She is happy, well adjusted and has held numerous jobs*.  Now, who's retarded, (D)scUmbags?

* - And she hates the Packers!     I take credit for that.  :-)

Good choice, pond scum.

Exactly, because that would make homosexuality a birth defect.

Special children are just
Angels in disguise.
Sent to fill our hearts with joy
And to brighten up our lives.

They have so much love to give
And bring us blessings untold.
We know those tiny feet
Have walked on streets paved with gold.

We know they were formed
From Heavenly air.
Created by our Father
With gentle, loving care.

Then He sent them to earth
To bless every life they touch.
If we follow their shining way
We can learn so very much.

And as we wonder why
God plans things as he does.
He only sends these little angels
To families with lots of love.

For He knows we will watch over them
And love them very much.
But maybe he sent them here
So they could watch over us.
