alt-weekly in Tucson Hiring a Staff Writer
Hey, We're Hiring a Staff Writer!
The Tucson Weekly is hiring a staff writer and GOSH THAT COULD BE YOU. Basically, we need someone who can contribute content to the Weekly, print and online, across the wide variety of subject matter we cover here. Plus, we need someone who isn't boring, who gets alt-weekly style. Someone who can write a well-researched cover story and a clever blog post about a YouTube video. We just want it all, is that too much to ask?
Read over the qualifications below and if you think you're up for the challenge, send me (email address at link) a cover letter, your resume, and three clips of your previously published work.
MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism
Experience: Experience as a freelancer or staffer at professional media outlets, preferably in the alternative newsmedia realm with clips that demonstrate reporting and writing proficiency.

1. I am so on this!
going to link NOW! Thanks Kali!

Whew! She's in Tucson.
I got a call last night at 11:37 Naturally, I was asleep. The message on the answering machine was a computer voice saying something along the lines of: You have received a landline text message from 918-206-1082.
When I looked up the area code it said it included Tulsa (OK). I thought that was where Amber was and that she was contacting me for a fictional spirit-guide consultation. Glad I was mistaken.

Um, yeah. Alt-media pays nothing, repeat NOTHING! They rely on a bare-bones staff & derive all revenue from ads that make Craig's List personals cringe.
This has success written all over it... :whatever:

Don't talk about nadin like that.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think she has any of the minimum requirements.
Does she have a Bachelor in anything?
-
Don't talk about nadin like that.
That's an idea for her. She could get a job at Reporting San Diego. I'm sure a growing, hard-hitting news site like RSD could use someone like LFR.

Wasn't Chief Running Fast a bachelor?

Tucson bureau and eastern fire-watch.

I suspect this might be the last we hear of any of this nonsense.

Allegedly, she has a Bachelor's in Communications.
As far as the requirement of demonstrative reporting and writing proficiency examples, well, we've got plenty of HAMber's material right here in the DUmpster.

Yeah. Of course.
This is our chance to help another DUmmie. We are a helpful lot right?

She's out of luck unless she was able to convince the college to release her transcripts.
My SO has no Idea!
I have B.A. in Communications from MSSU. But I lost my copies of my transcripts due to the tornado and my flash drive with the electric copy getting stolen at a shelter. I have become delinquent in the payments of the loans due to no job since May 22, 2011. To get the transcripts I have to contact a clearinghouse and set up a payment plan. According to them I must get a paycheck so they can use the numbers on it to start to take payments off of it or my bank account number ( I don't have a bank account).
My SO keeps showing me jobs in my field and is yelling at me to apply. "Stop wasting your education" he says. Those jobs want copies of my transcripts. I can't give them what I no longer have. It like he is putting salt in a very open wound. He won't listen or understand. For now all I can do is pray for one of the fast food or clerk jobs to call. I am hurting so bad and he just won't stop and see what is going on.
So many are in a very similar boat right now in this country. It is a catch 22 for so many, need proof of education to get the job they are trained for, but can't get it due to not working and going delinquent. Thus, can not get the paperwork to change things.
And I am sure they to get to hear it from loved ones. But it still makes you feel alone in this world.

I've never applied for a job that asked for my transcripts.

Ditto. Even as a new graduate, nor was I ever asked for a copy of my high school diploma when I worked retail for $5/hour as a cashier.

My current job requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. I gave them my resume and that was it. I doubt they even checked my references... references are nothing more than name-dropping.
Edit: Actually, they called me. I never applied there... I just got a phone call one day. I've been there for four years.
-
I've been thinking about this. I thought that she not long ago claimed to have moved up the food chain and reached the level of top agravator at some agravate-the-hell-out-of-people organization.
Why would she give that up?
-

I did have to show my degree in my current job. Boss told me that was so they did not get sued since they required it. He never asked for the transcripts though I had them in my briefcase if he wanted them. Good thing too cause I failed a few classes and had to take them over. :-)
-
My last two jobs required a resume and transcripts.
-
Back on topic... LFR writing articles would be an editor's worst nightmare. :lmao:
-
So, an alt paper in a college town filled with hipsters and indie writer wannabes is going to hire a homeless woman who can't spell. Yeah. Right.

My thoughts, too.
They'd have to hire an extra editor just to correct her stuff.

Yeah, but those were two pretty important jobs; not jobs just anybody could fill.

Important jobs are the least checked out.
FRANK, we have had people in important jobs in the military that after a few years were found to be imposters, So called Doctors and Dentists, -------Not unlike the Vets that speaking to a so called Vet to find out they are a fake.
We have here in the cave men and woman that can SMELL out a fake.

Hell, they would have to rewrite her stuff. I've seen little kids with better language skills.

This thread almost blew up before I could get a word in edgewise.
The word is "surprised".
I'm surprised LFR is tired of her telemarketing job.

This thread was rowed back over from the DUmp and posted it within two minutes of HAMber making her OP. So far, she's had only one reply on her OP, and we've managed almost 30 replies of helpful advice for her.
Her thread here, once again, has gotten more views than even the OP at the DUmp. HAMber really should learn to be thankful for the amount of exposure we've given her that she otherwise would not get.

I should also imagine that the large number of correctly-spelled words helps improve her skills in that arena.

Interesting. The one I just retired from, called me. I never applied. Was there 28 years.
I seem to recall they asked me to fill out an aplication around six months after I started.

I've been at my job for over 25 years and still haven't filled out an application. I was going to apply fora job in the warehouse, but the manager always use to talk to people and show them around. After a 1/2 hour or so the guy asked me if I wanted to work in the shop instead. Filled out the payroll and assorted paper work, but no application, and started a few days later.

Same here where I'm at now. No application, just a few forms, and that was it.

Everything in the bolded is SO EASY to accomplish but you are not going to pay all that back right?
So here's you a plan to try and get your ass off the gov't teat:
1) go get a job at a 7/11, any job
2) go get a bank account (unless you have also screwed that up by owing money for bounced checks) ::)
3) take that first paycheck you earn, all $54.56 dollars and set up a payment plan to get your transcripts
4) now that you have your transcripts go back to NOT paying anything
Seriously, I'm so sick of these people. They have not one ounce of shame. NONE, ZERO, OBAMA!
-
1) go get a job at a 7/11
She's already demonstrated that working at 7/11 is above her skill level.

Yeah, that was a nightmare for the manager there; unbalanced cash drawers, drive-offs on gasoline purchases, bitching about the pay.
She was there for like.....two and a half weeks.
-
She's already demonstrated that working at 7/11 is above her skill level.
Yet somehow, simultaneously, below her dignity. Oddest thing with a liberal: usually they're unqualified to do jobs they already think they're too good to do.

none, zero, obama.
Heh !

lol.....when I add say 5 + 0 = 5 for my son I say 5 + Obama = 5
He gets it :lmao:

Based on her posts, I'm not sure she could correctly subtract 7 from 11.

I'm not sure she could look at a 7 or an 11 and realize that arithmetic operations can be applied to them.

I wonder what his teacher thinks when the class is doing their numbers.
Reminds me of the time my son was 5 and took tampax to school for show and tell. I was mortified when I realized what he had done and when I asked him what he was doing with them, he said they were his boat guns.

If they had "super" ones, why don't they have "Outstanding," or "Extraordinary," or "Amazing?"

Two little boys go into the grocery store. One is eight years old and the other one is five years old. The eight year old grabs a box of tampons from the shelf and carries it to the register for checkout.
The cashier asks, "Oh, these must be for your mom, huh?" The eight-year-old replies "Nope, not for my mom." Without thinking, the cashier responded "Well, they must be for your sister then?" The eight year old quickly responded, "Nope, not for my sister either." The cashier had now become curious "Oh. Not for your mom and not for your sister? Who are they for?" The eight year old says, "They're for my five year old little brother."
The cashier is surprised "Your five year old little brother?" The eight year old explains: "Well yeah, they say on TV if you wear one of these, you can swim or ride a bike and my little brother can't do either of them!"

^And the horse you rode in on !
