Four Chain Stores Will Close On Thanksgiving Day To Let Workers Spend Time With Family
Source: Think Progress
BY BRYCE COVERT
Four major chain stores — Dillard’s, Burlington, REI, American Girl — confirmed to ThinkProgress on Thursday that they will stay closed on Thanksgiving Day as other stores begin to announce they’ll begin Black Friday a day early.
In explaining its decision, a spokesperson for Dillard’s told ThinkProgress, “We choose to remain closed on Thanksgiving in longstanding tradition of honoring of our customers’ and associates’ time with family.†The other three didn’t elaborate on the reasons for staying closed.
By contrast, last week Macy’s was the first retailer to announce that it would be open on Thanksgiving Day, starting at 6 p.m. That’s the second year in a row it has opened on the federal holiday itself, rather than at midnight as it had in 2012. Walmart also told ThinkProgress that nearly 1 million workers will have to report to work on Thanksgiving as it will be open all day long. More are likely to make the same announcement, as last year Kmart, Target, Toys R Us, Gap, Best Buy, and a handful of others decided to follow Macy’s lead and begin Black Friday on Thursday.
While the stores that open say employees are happy to volunteer and get extra holiday pay, that may not be the whole story for everyone. The United States is the only developed country that doesn’t guarantee that workers can take paid holidays. That ends up meaning nearly a quarter of private sector employees don’t get them, including 45 percent of service sector workers. On top of that, many retail workers struggle with erratic scheduling practices that leave them without enough hours to live off of, so they may be desperate to get the extra shifts. There were also reports last year of Kmart workers who were denied their requests to take the day off.

The DUmmies spend the whole year yelling that corporations are evil, money grubbing organizations, and then they're shocked every year when some of them want to stay open for a holiday that most of them don't like anyway.
If the whole world WAS closed, like they swear they want, they'd suspect that it was fundies who were behind it all, and they'd want their stores open again to preserve their sanity.
In other words, you can't win.

3. I don't care what stores are open that day, because I will
not be shopping.
I'm sure they'll need to figure that in. ::)

9. I will probably gets some boos for this
I will work Thanksgiving Day and get double time and 1/2 for it. I will observer the day after (Black Friday) on that day. That means the last day at work before I retire (Saturday the 29th of Nov. is my last work day) I will get double time and 1/2 because Black Friday falls on my regular day off.
Cavers will say I'm bragging. Actually, this caver is amazed you've had an entire career working on the clock, but then again you'd eat a pile of union shit before you'd eat an ounce of non-union steak. Most of you know I always try to promote these benefits for ALL workers. I've been doing it on the DU for almost 10 years. And look what you have to show for it.

19. the truly stupid thing is that they are chasing the same amount of dollars.
there wont be any extra money in consumers pockets because these dopes are out fishing for it for one more day.
they should look up the word "finite" and realize all they are doing is increasing their costs chasing a finite amount of money.
That is the dumbest thing I've heard all day, you idiot.

For a bunch of nihilists and atheists, they sure do get all fundy about Thanksgiving, one of the few days when almost every business pays a "living wage."
They want a 12-year-old girl to have access to secret abortions, but HEAVEN FORBID a damned FREEBORN AMERICAN WORKER work on a day that they
PERENNIALLY CLAIM IS RUINED BY THEIR REPUBLICAN RELATIVES ANYWAY.
Sheesh. Some "liberals."

I've worked holidays. It's no big deal, and the double pay is nice. The fact that I had someone that cared about me enough to set aside time to celebrate said holiday at another time meant more than whatever occasion I was supposed to celebrate.
Maybe that's why DUmmies are bitter. Nobody cares.
-
To me, the only holidays that mean something are Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. Those holidays exist for a reason. They're meant to be celebrated on those days because men fought and died for them.

Cavers will say I'm bragging.....
About.....?

Double time and a half......wasn't so where I worked as a young man. It was time and a half plus you got paid for a paid holiday. I used to take the day off if possible and then my fellow workers wondered how I made almost as much as they did and didn't work that day. Only a couple ever understood when I tried to explain it to them.
I took the day off and got paid for it.....they worked and got time and a half for working it PLUS paid for a holiday....after taxes, not much difference in our checks.
Don't worry, I worked plenty of holidays plus having to work overtime on those holidays. Overtime on holidays was when you made good money.
-
I would think they would be all for people working on Thanksgiving. After all isn't this a holiday that celebrates the rape of the wilderness and the stealing of the land from the indigenous population?
-
Hmm. mopinko admits there's a finite amount of money - except of course when it comes to entitlements.

36. I thought Thanksgiving was that evil holiday that celebrated those nasty, religious fundy, white Europeans using, stealing from, and eventually killing the peaceful Natives, and why should we be celebrating THAT!?!
Damn, this site can be confusing.
:rotf: :lmao: :rotf:

Just a reminder that Hobby Lobby is closed on Thanksgiving, closed on Christmas, and pays their employees a "living wage" of $15 upon full time hire.

So... Omaha Steve's last day on the clock for the Omaha Police Division will be spent cleaning up beer, turkey, and mashed potato vomit from the back seat of a police car.
Usually it's beer and nacho vomit.
Enjoy, Steve!

Some of the most tried-and-true DUmmy memes are (a) being tormented by RW relatives on Thanksgiving Day, and (b) pointing to Christmas sales as a primary indicator of a bad economy (under Bush) and a good economy (under 0loser). This is established history - it is actually, manifestly true. So why in the stars do they insist that all stores be closed on Thanksgiving? Seems like they'd personally want to be anywhere but home, and they'd want everyone in the stores to prove that 0monkeynuts has the best economy since Rome.
It makes NO sense.

Actually we have in times of stress or Woes, gone to our local truck stop for both Thanksgiving and Xmas day meals that beat the heck out of anything one could prepare at home. Be it a death in the family, working 6 day week and too tired to cook for family coming to visit, pile everyone in the car and take them to a place with Turkey, Ham, Roast of Beast with 35 side dishes.
No Truck stops in the area, the Asian places are open. One year my family and I about wiped out all the all one could eat King Crab Legs. We figured it out and the cost to cook at home for 15 people was twice what we paid with a$50.00 tip and none of us had to do the dishes.
Why go shopping on a holiday, one has 360 + day of the year to do that.
-
They think Thanksgiving is racist. They hate it. No? :???: :mental:

I thought the big guy was supposed to be dead by Thanksgiving. No?
At least having symptoms too severe for puke cleaning duty?

About.....?
He finally got elected for something. Yeah, he was only elected to work on the holiday, but he still finally gets to say he was elected.

I'm sure Chick-fil-a will be closed on those same holidays. :-)

When I first started my job 25 years ago, we got Holiday pay + double time for the hours during your shift and triple time for hours outside your shift.
Now we get time and a half + holiday pay during the shift and 2 1/2 X outside your shift.
-
Holiday pay has always been double time for me. The extra pay was marked "holiday pay" on my check stub. Overtime is still time and a half.
That doesn't include shift pay, but I never liked working 3rd anyway. I rarely got shift pay for 2nd because it's usually a given in the restaurant industry and reflected in your regular wages.

I never got holiday pay or shift pay when I worked in the restaurant business. It was just a given you was gonna have to work those shifts and some holidays. Bout the only holiday I ever got off was Christmas and then it wasn't paid. I never got paid holidays until I went on salary.
-
Like I said, it was usually reflected in your regular pay. I worked all shifts but I was scheduled for 2nd (4pm-12pm) 90% of the time.
I remember working some holidays when we had no customers at all. One in particular was a Thanksgiving when all the employees spent the day at the bar. Holiday pay and overtime was anything over 40 hours.

Yep Chris. Dummies all worried about something they ain't never gonna get. Kinda hard to get OT/Holiday/Shift pay when you don't have a job. I'm surprised they ain't whining about not getting extra money on their welfare cards for the holidays. :cheersmate:
