The riddle of black America’s rising woes under Obama

A paradox haunts America’s first black president. African-American wealth has fallen further under Barack Obama than under any president since the Depression. Yet they are the only group that still gives him high ratings. So meagre is Mr Obama’s national approval rating that embattled Democrats have made him unwelcome in states that twice swept him to power. Those who have fared worst under Mr Obama are the ones who love him the most. You would be hard-pressed to find a better example of perception-driven politics. As the Reverend Kevin Johnson asked in 2013: “Why are we so loyal to a president who isn’t loyal to us?”

The problem has taken on new salience with the resignation of Eric Holder. America’s first black attorney-general has tried to correct the gulag-sized disparities in prison sentencing between blacks and whites. His exit leaves just two African-Americans in Mr Obama’s cabinet. Given the mood among Republicans, it is hard to imagine the US Senate confirming a successor to Mr Holder who shares his priorities.

Edward Luce loses his credibility with this.

Without Mr Obama’s efforts, African-American suffering would have been even greater. He has fought Congress to preserve food stamps and long-term unemployment insurance – both of which help blacks disproportionately. The number of Americans without health insurance has fallen by 8m since the Affordable Care Act came into effect. Likewise, no president has done as much as Mr Obama – to depressingly little effect – to try to correct the racial bias in US federal sentencing. Bill Clinton was once termed “America’s first black president”. But it was under Mr Clinton that incarceration rates rose to their towering levels.

A leftist no doubt.

The comments are idiotic.

@Bennett Quillen I think you have forgotten about Bush andd Clinton. Clinton deregulated finance and did not prioritise Al Qaeda. Under Bush financial firms continued to run wild and the army were set on a bunch of people for no good reason and with no strategy. Why is America screwed? Fallout from those guys. Has Obama been great? No, but killing Bin Laden and trying to make US citizens healthier aren't as bad as overseeing a financial meltdown and a Middle Eastern meltdown.

Killing Osama did not stop Jihad. People are losing their health insurance with Obamacare and now we have Ebola. Spoken like dumb clueless leftist with no brain.  :mental:  :bird:

@PauvrePapillon What a horribly ideological diatribe. Only in American politics can such ridiculous counter-factual opinion be held publically and with a sense of legitimacy. Such arguments will lead to cataclysmic change, all that remains to be decided is when and where the originators of this destruction will be afterwards.

Huh?  :mental: Here is what he or she is replying too.

Why not hold the Clueless One accountable for the effects of his anti-business, pro-welfare-state policies? It’s an insult to assume that black Americans are not capable of competing in a free market and that the only way to "help" them is to give them more handouts. But is this not exactly the precept to everything the Marxist Democrats and their leader stand for?

Or maybe it's just as simple as this: In a Democracy, when you are the party of the poor, you want to create more poor - or at least thwart more poor from becoming rich. When you are the party of the rich, you want to create more rich - and open up opportunities for more people to become rich. The Marxist Democrats are truly the party of the poor. And they look to keep their voters satisfied with handouts. But they don't look to really help them change their situation. In fact, they would rather import tens of millions more poor voters, those without education, assets or job skills, put pressure on the low end of the job market and wage scale and make it even more difficult for the poor to get ahead.

But FT doesn't want to talk about any of this. They would rather point out that the president's hair is curly - and that this is all it takes for him to be loved by those who share such superficial characteristics. Wow.

He means getting another blatant, militant racist like Holder approved.

But liberals always try to tell us that more white people are on welfare, than blacks. Which is it?  The second part is also a lie. You have to have had a job to be helped by extended unemployment benefits.
