Even for NYC, this is mildly odd.
Police: Man Climbs Out Of Grate, Throws Smoke Bombs In Greenwich Village Restaurant
October 10, 2014 11:10 PM
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police said a man climbed out of a sidewalk grate and hurled a smoke bomb into a Greenwich Village restaurant Friday evening, before climbing back underground and vanishing.
The incident happened around 5:45 p.m. Friday at Bar Pitti, at 268 Sixth Ave. between Bleecker and Houston streets, police told CBS 2.
The suspect emerged from the grate that leads up from the subway system and threw the device, police said.
The bomb emitted red smoke when a suspect wearing an American flag T-shirt hurled it, police said. The manager at Bar Pitti said an employee grabbed the smoking device and tossed it back outside, at which point the suspect ducked back underground and disappeared.
The incident brought the NYPD Bomb Squad to the scene, but no one was injured, police said.
A college prank, maybe? A Red Sox fan? Maybe an Eagles' fan?

I'd call this something a bit more serious than odd. Sounds more like a dry run for something bigger.

Yeah, like Islamic hand grenade rehearsals.
-
Something weird, but I doubt if it's a dry run for an organized terror attack. They often do make covert practice target runs before a real attack, but actually throwing a smoke bomb would completely blow the element of surprise for the actual attack. Maybe one of the crazed homeless denizens of the tunnels.

Nah Wasp, I see a very simple explanation for all this activity.
We have a huge population of people that live down under in our major city's. A huge city of the homeless and they have learned to tap into the creature comforts of top side.
Quite amazing what they do to live down there and how they can set things up for all the comforts of home. Seen a couple of films on the History Station on this sub world we seldom have any idea exists.
The only thing the people need is food and they raid the dumpsters for day old bread or vegetables that are ok to eat. Rest.. by law must throw out any prepared but uneaten food each night as do grocery stores that dump out of date canned goods.
My thinking is this eating establishment put a lock on their dumpster, a once prime picking place for food.
Saw this in VA when the fast food paces were ordered to pour bleach in the dumpsters so the homeless would not become ill from food only 2 hours old.

I won't dispute you, though I do think it shows a greater vulnerability to our citizens from a threat under their feet.
If this was just a crazy, homeless nut acting foolish, he unwittingly showed the jihadis something interesting. Or, it could be an op to spread terror without much effort or material.

Was the guy wearing a cape?

The guy was a C.H.U.D. and wanted to add some smokey flavoring to his next meal. :-)

You're on target with the first point, on the second, I dunno, they haven't shown any lack of bloodthirstiness ever before, I'm not sure why they'd start now. Considering it's NYC, I tend to think it's either a nut from the tunnels, or there is some personal rivalry or organized crime issue connected to it.

Either way, a weakness has been exploited. Now that it's been identified, I wonder what precautionary measures will be taken?

I dunno, more laws and signs...?

That's the approach they tend to take in NYC and Albany (NYS Legislature).

Well, it is New York... :lmao:

Fox & Friends First had a video of the smoke bomber. He looked like someone from the Occupy movement . . . :whistling:

Precautionary Measures? :lmao: In NYC? :lmao:
Maybe they'll take the cue from this and crack down even harder on "profiling", or confiscate personal weapons from even more law-abiding civilians, just to make sure they don't make young muslim males between the ages of 18 and 35 angry? Maybe Comrade Whatsiznuts - you know, the new Mayor who's creating such a shining utopia out of the Five Borroughs - will ram through the city council a new tax system on non-muslims or something, just to show how sensitive they are to the plight of muslim scum the world over.
