State Employee Won't Lower Flags for Helms

Raleigh, N.C. (AP) - A longtime North Carolina state employee has chosen to retire instead of lowering flags to honor former Republican Sen. Jesse Helms.

U.S. and state flags have been flying at half-staff since Gov. Mike Easley ordered them lowered after Helms died Friday.

L.F. Eason III told his staff at the state Standards Laboratory to ignore the directive. The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Eason sent workers an e-mail saying he didn't think it was appropriate to lower the flags because of Helms' "doctrine of negativity, hate, and prejudice."

Eason is calling it quits after 29 years with the Department of Agriculture after superiors told the 51-year-old to lower the flags or retire immediately.

Flags at the lab have since been lowered to half-staff

Too bad they didn't just fire his a$$.

Ignoring a direct order from your boss is always a great idea.

These idiot lefties think the world turns on their stupid little prejudices.

I agree he should just have been fired.  The good news: at 51 he won't be getting much of a pension, even if he has been there 20 years.

Something tells me his bosses were glad to see him go. Morons like this usually have a big grievance file.

Buh bye libtard!

Several people, including his wife, argued to Eason that the flags belonged to the state, as did the lab. But Eason said he felt a strong sense of ownership.

Eason and a previous boss had sketched out the building's rough design on a napkin at the Atlanta airport in 1984 after attending a national conference on weights and measures.

He then worked to get funding for it in the state budget, and he recently helped snag state money to study building another lab.

"I designed and built that lab," he said. "Even though technically the bricks and mortar belong to the state of North Carolina, I feel very strongly that everything that comes out of there is my responsibility."

It was not the first time Eason felt uneasy about lowering the flag.

A registered Democrat who frequently votes a split ticket, he said he had no problems lowering the flag for former Sen. Terry Sanford or President Reagan. But he remembers wondering whether he would be willing to lower the flag after President Nixon's death.

He never had to make that decision, since it rained both days.

Typical. Libtarded entitled jackass who only cares about his personal politics. And with a sense of entitlement thrown in. The guy's wife even tried to reason with him. I bet she's just THRILLED he's going to home full time now.

29 years and it comes down to this?!  I'm thinking he pissed off a lot of people in that time and they jumped on the opportunity to get rid of him.

Usually with state jobs, there's 6-months of paperwork involved in getting rid of deadwood like this.  Then the Union thugs step in, and the EEOC bureaucrats, etc, etc ad nauseum.

Something tells me this guy has enough people pissed off that they had his departure ticket sitting in somebody's desk drawer, just waiting for the moment to tell him "Don't let the door hit you in th ass on the way out!"

Assuming his pension is like the State of California, he will get apx. 58-60% of his highest salary.  That is taxable, but he'll actually do OK.

Damn it.

Imagine the retirement party his co-workers threw for him - and no one showed up other than his best friends.

They say that you can always tell how valuable a person was to an organization by the timing of the retirement party - before he leaves or after.
