Eating Burgers for first time

OK-it's a Burger King ad of people in different cultures who have NEVER eaten a burger and have them chose between McDonald and BK. Yes, they are both crap-but the video is interesting in other cultures approach to an American classic (the burger, not the McD or BK).

The funniest comment toward the end is when an Inuit, after tasting a BK Whooper, is asked if the burger was better than seal meat and he replies that he would prefer seal meat.

NOTE: Edited the word "Eskimo" out of original post which someone objected too and applied the politically correct word - Christ, what thin skin.

4. Alert for use of the word "Eskimo" was totally shot down.....

On Thu Sep 11, 2014, 01:37 PM an alert was sent on the following post:

REASON FOR ALERT

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.

ALERTER'S COMMENTS

Eskimo is a vulgar, derogatory term and was not in the video advertisement.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Sep 11, 2014, 01:46 PM, and the Jury voted 0-7 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: http://www.uaf.edu/anlc/resources/inuit-eskimo/
Inuit or Eskimo: Which name to use? by Lawrence Kaplan

Although the name "Eskimo" is commonly used in Alaska to refer to all Inuit and Yupik people of the world, this name is considered derogatory in many other places because it was given by non-Inuit people and was said to mean "eater of raw meat."

Linguists now believe that "Eskimo" is derived from an Ojibwa word meaning "to net snowshoes." However, the people of Canada and Greenland prefer other names. "Inuit," meaning "people," is used in most of Canada, and the language is called "Inuktitut" in eastern Canada although other local designations are used also. The Inuit people of Greenland refer to themselves as "Greenlanders" or "Kalaallit" in their language, which they call "Greenlandic" or "Kalaallisut."

Most Alaskans continue to accept the name "Eskimo," particularly because "Inuit" refers only to the Inupiat of northern Alaska, the Inuit of Canada, and the Kalaallit of Greenland, and it is not a word in the Yupik languages of Alaska and Siberia.

****** I'm assuming the person who posted this is an American. We wouldn't have knowledge that this is a derogatory term. Let this be a learning experience at DU. We need to let this poster know the history of that word - and never use it ourselves again.

Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: There is some debate, even in Alaska among the Natives, as to whether the term is vulgar or racist. Sometimes the term is used to distinguish the "Eskimos" (Yupiks, Inupiats, Aleuts) from the Indians (Athabascans, Tlingits, Haida). I get where the Alerter is coming from, but I think he or she may be over-reacting a bit to a harmless post.

Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: "Eskimo" became politically incorrect relatively recently, and quite possibly the poster is unaware of this. Why not politely reply to the post and ask to edit?

Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Eskimo is neither vulgar nor derogatory. It is considered by some in Canada to be offensive, but it isn't in Alaska. There are many native Alaskans who refer to themselves as such.

Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given

Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Huh? STUPID alert. Leave it.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

Any DUmmies that find the word Eskimo offensive had better start boycotting all Nestle' products because they still have the Eskimo Pie brand of ice cream treats.

I mean, seriously.

Just how many Eskimos are there in the world, to be insulted?

Like maybe 10, 20 thousand real ones, total?

Spent 2 weeks in Alaska doing medical support for natives in Unalakleet.

They call themselves Eskimos.

I surprised us at the time because our superiors were determined to scare the word out of us. It struck me as another fine example of how people in charge work very hard to make themselves look good without doing anything of value.

Sounds like a suicide note from the 1980s cult movie Heathers.

I spent 104 days in Fairbanks in '04 and 106 in '06. Like Snugs said, they call themselves that. Docstew was stationed up there. He can attest as well. These Progs are just looking for something to be offended by. AGAIN. Whiny little pussies.

Again . . .

They're not happy unless they're not happy, and spreading their unhappiness to happy people.
