This may be "a 'strategic error' on the behalf of IS," as my wife just put it.

The video footage shows the militants standing on an aircraft at what is believed to be Taqba airbase
The radical Islamist group Isis (now known as Islamic State) has released a new video threatening Russian President Vladimir Putin that it plans to come to Russia and "free Chechnya".
The video footage, believed to be filmed in the Taqba airbase captured from Syrian government forces in Raqqa, shows an IS fighter in a military jet.
"This message is for you, Vladimir Putin! These are the aircraft you sent to Bashar [Assad], and we're going to send them to you. Remember that!" he said.
"This is Russian technology," said a militant with a Russian voice, according to The Moscow Times.
"We will with the consent of Allah free Chechnya and all of the Caucasus! The Islamic State is here and will stay here, and it will spread with the grace of Allah!" another militant warns.
They're poking the Russian bear. This isn't a "life-affirming strategy," IMO.

If Putin went after ISIS it would be to make Obumbles look worse than he already does.

So what will Obama promise Putin to stop him him from doing that? More non-interference in the Ukraine?

It's a MiG 21, I doubt the Russian Air Force and Air Defense Force are going to feel very threatened. Putin would certainly be ruthless fighting them, but the Russians don't have an incredible track record of success in quickly squelching Islamist cutthroats, the Caucasus is still crawling with them.

Maybe Putin would have the balls to take out Mecca. Fair is fair, Muslims have been destroying monuments of other religions for centuries.

Even if ISIS loaded one up with a few bombs, with a suicide pilot, a MiG-21 could be taken down fairly easily.

Which is precisely why Putin will do something like that. Bomb the living hell out of a few of their stronghold, kill about 1000 of them and tell Obama "See! That's how its done."

I don't think the Russians are fearful of their 1950s/1960s technology. OTOH, ISIS is being world-class stupid, publicly picking a fight with a national leader who would have both the means and the will to crush them. And who might even tell BHO, "If you ever decide to do something serious to them, we won't stand in the way."

The Russkiis can't move shit into Syria without going through Turkey, or through Iran and then Iraq , so I expect ISIS is perfectly safe from the Pootster as the geography stands now. If they did, though, it'd end up humiliating Obozo and Hitlery, and infuriating McCain and Graham, since Bashir Assad is a huge Russian client, and Putin's first order of business would be to crush the shit out of ALL the Syrian insurgents and restore the Ba'athists to a very firm grip on power.

Exactly, DAT. Also, what would make for 'bad PR' in the US would make for excellent PR in Russia.
'Let fly the dogs of war' and all that . . . :whistling:

I don't think it's very wise to tease the Russian bear with a juicy steak.
