The Reason Gas Is More Expensive And Who’s Profiting

According to the IJ Review the two states who have the highest taxes are, you guessed it, New York at $0.505 and California at $0.4978. The two states with the lowest tax rates are: Alaska at $0.124 and New Jersey at $0.145.

Expressed as a percentage the price for a gallon of gas breaks down like this:

    Crude Oil: 67%.
    Refining Costs and Profits: 12%
Distribution, Marketing, and Retail Costs and Profits: 9%
Taxes: 12%. Federal excise taxes were 18.4 cents per gallon and state excise taxes average 23.52 cents per gallon.

The National Review reports that Exxon profits have averaged 8.26% for the past 20 quarters so government makes almost 50% more in “profit” from gasoline than the oil company’s themselves!

According to liberals, oil companies are evil, not the government. Oil companies power our world despite the government getting in their way. We should be giving these job creators medals, not demonizing them and letting the government rob them.

They go to the most dangerous areas on earth, get oil out of the ground facing hazardous weather or ideological crazies, put it on a truck, drive it to a port, cross an ocean, put it on another truck, take it to a refinery, deal with the expenses there, onto yet another truck to put into our stations, and still provide it all for less than a gallon of milk.

I salute them for that, it truly is an every-day economic miracle... but I still need to make qualifications.

The oil companies are not saints in this either. Energy is run like the airlines were 40 years ago, as quasi-legal entities. The gov't effectively controls prices, and the big corporations don't mind that as it means they're guaranteed a profit. They delve into Green Energy for the same reason, the Gov't is guaranteeing them a return with subsidies and tax breaks.

Big Oil likes this state of affairs, and it will not willingly give it up. At a time when we need deregulation, and you can be sure they'd be flat out against it.

Do Alaskans still get a monetary benefit from their oil?

If so, how is it paid?

The Alaskan Permanent fund dividend, yes, it's still around. It used to be a check in the mail, but most Alaskans have chosen Electronic distribution at this time.

The money, as the name implies, comes from a stock portfolio (http://www.ktuu.com/news/news/higher-alaska-permanent-fund-returns-herald-rise-in-dividends/27378518), itself constructed with money from Private companies.

Couldn't quite remember all the methods of collection, so I pulled this up (http://www.apfc.org/home/Content/aboutFund/aboutPermFund.cfm):

"At least 25 percent of all mineral lease rentals, royalties, royalty sales proceeds, federal mineral revenue-sharing payments and bonuses received by the state be placed in a permanent fund, the principal of which may only be used for income-producing investment"

When I was in California (only all my life) and they talked about conservation and cheered when oil (and thus gasoline) prices went through the roof (as they do frequently), the tax revenues went DOWN.  And of course, as of probably 30 years ago the California legislature sent all the gasoline taxes to the General Fund.

Net result of "green" policies:  The State gets hurt and the poor get hurt.

YAY democrats!
