The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of the Department of Transportation, published last week an "advanced notice of proposed rulemaking" on "vehicle-to-vehicle communications."
What NHTSA is proposing could begin a transformation in the American transportation system that makes our lives better and freer — or gives government more power over where we go and when.
In announcing its proposed rulemaking, NHTSA is stressing its intention to protect the "privacy" of American drivers.
I do not like this one bit. The End of Days is coming perhaps?

I'm good enough at basic electrical design. Re-routing around the box - assuming the problem child won't be a line of code in the car's engine control computer, of course - is not an insurmountable task.

I expect it'll be illegal to tamper with it, on the other hand everything on the road prior to some yet-to-be-determined start date for the requirement would almost certainly be grandfathered.

Of course the GPS capabilities will include allowing the government to know when and where we are. Also it will allow them track mileage for that new travel tax that is coming.
