She was 14, had her since she was a pup. Vet said a couple of weeks ago she wasn't in pain, she was just dying. No diseases other than years.
This morning she was asleep in wife's bathroom when wife went to town. I was in yard doing stuff, came in for a drink, Sophie was standing unsteadily in doorway of bedroom looking for wife. She liked to be held and rocked, so I picked her up and went on the porch.
Molly, a long-haired chihuahua, sat by the chair watching us.
After a few minutes, Sophie gave a little chirp, and stopped breathing. Molly started howling.
Today was a sucky day at our house. Tomorrow will be better.

Me too, but I'm using this forum as catharsis. I think.
We have one more old dog, also 14, but he runs around like a puppy, and Molly who is four and will probably outlive us. Our older daughter will adopt her if that's the case.

I did the same thing when our Beagle Missy passed away.

You're a good man, dane, sir.

For once, my allergies really are acting up.
But that's not the reason I have tears in my eyes.
She'll be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge, dane.

I'm gonna need to carry a LOT of treats - we have a pet cemetary in the back yard with a LOT of patio stones for markers. And on the stones are various ceramic creatures. Folks might call us sentimental.

Thanks, Frank.

Sorry to hear that dane,

Thanks, ChuckJ. I was ok with the whole thing, right up until Molly started howling.

My condolances for your loss, sir. :bawl:

Thanks to you, dane, Sophie was loved until the very end.
And even afterwards.
-
So sorry to hear that. She was lucky to have you and your wife in her life.
