James Garner: bleeding heart liberal

"Too many actors have run for office," he writes. "There's one difference between me and them: I know I'm not qualified. In my opinion, Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't qualified to be governor of California. Ronald Reagan wasn't qualified to be governor, let alone president. I was a vice president of the Screen Actors Guild when he was its president. My duties consisted of attending meetings and voting. The only thing I remember is that Ronnie never had an original thought and that we had to tell him what to say. That's no way to run a union, let along a state or a country."

Garner writes that he was asked to run for Congress in 1962 as a Republican, and "it didn't stop them when I told them I was a Democrat. …They just thought I could win." In 1990, Democratic leaders approached him about running for governor of California, but the discussion got to the issue of abortion and Garner says he answered, "I don't have an opinion, because that's up to the woman. It has nothing to do with me." The conversation pretty much stopped there.

Garner is what he calls a "bleeding-heart liberal," having participated in the 1963 civil rights March on Washington and later advocating for a number of progressive causes. He voted for Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952, he writes, but never cast a ballot for a Republican again. He voted for Adlai Stevenson in 1956, and calls him "the most intelligent presidential candidate we've ever had. I think Obama runs a close second."

40. Maybe he did with another name

Ya never know who is a DUer.
Though he was a liberal, I'll go out on a limb and say that I don't believe that James Garner was a DUmmy.

"Too many actors have run for office," he writes. "There's one difference between me and them: I know I'm not qualified.

Every citizen is qualified for elected office, so long as he meets the requirements set in the constitution or charter which established that office. That was the intent of the builders, farmers, shopkeepers, newspapermen, teachers, and Veterans who founded this country.

The idea of a professional political class would have sickened Washington, Jefferson, or Madison.

I find it hard to believe Garner said he had nothing to do with women's pregnancy. He was celibate ? Or was he the other ?

I barely remember his old tv show but my father watched it every week. James Garderner was a well-known moonbat who met his wife at the DNC convention that nominated Stevenson. Then, in 2008, Garderner said that Obama was the best candidate he'd seen since Adlai. He might have been entertaining but his politics were always whack.

VIA USO.

Today we remember actor James Garner – a Korean War veteran who received two Purple Hearts – who died Saturday night at 86. An infantry soldier before he made it big in movies and television, Garner took a USO tour to Vietnam in 1967. He will be missed

 About his military history.

At age 16, he lied about his age in order to join the Merchant Marine during the last year of World War II.

In 1950, Garner became the first Oklahoman drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. Two battlefield injuries and Purple Hearts later, Garner returned to the United States.

Though he was probably left of center politically.  Doubt very much he was a member of Skin's lunatics.  For one thing he actually fought for this country and collected a couple of enemy marksmenship badges for it.

I just finished watching "The Great Escape" with Garner and Steve McQueen.  Great movie.

I remember reading somewhere Steve had bought a house just up the hill from Garner's, and that Garner was meticulous about how his yard looked, always clean, neat, and well landscaped.

McQueen said he could toss his empty beer cans from his house and they'd end up in Garner's yard.  It was his source of entertainment to see James come home to a yard full of beer cans, and watch him totally loose it.  Garner finally figured out what was happening , but it took a while!
