A Malaysian Airlines passenger plane has been shot down on the Russian-Ukraine border, killing all 295 people on board including a reported five to ten Britons.
The Boeing 777 aircraft was hit by a sophisticated surface-to-air missile over territory held by pro-Russian rebels who the Ukrainian government says are backed by the Kremlin.
The Ukrainian authorities laid the blame for the attack on the rebels by denying any responsibility for the missile launch.
Flight MH17, which was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew, was flying between Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur after taking off at lunchtime today.
TV pictures from the scene showed a pall of smoke billowing into the sky near Donetsk, apparently from the stricken aircraft.
Apparently, pro-Russian rebels shot down a Ukranian air force fighter jet with a missile yesterday, too.
This is going to set the area into more of a tizzy than it's been in in the past.

Obama gave a brief mention of the crash, then gave a shout out to someone else at a scheduled speech. Clueless idiot.
-
About two minutes after I posted the story, it was reported that there were 23 Americans on board.
-
Obama wants this pinned on the Ukrainian separatists, not on Russia and Putin. He does not want to have to go toe to toe with Putin.

:bawl: I clicked on a link from Drudge and it showed bodies laying everywhere. I am never going to get that out of my mind.

They were saying that parts of bodies were still strapped in seats.

'That was a blast - look at the smoke': Sick boast of the laughing rebels as they 'saw MH17 hit by missile' - hours after leader boasted: 'We warned you - do not fly in our sky'
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2696389/That-blast-look-smoke-Sick-boast-laughing-rebels-saw-MH17-hit-missile-hours-leader-boasted-We-warned-not-fly-sky.html#ixzz37lqhdBXi
Laughing rebels filmed the plane as it crashed, gleefully bragging ‘That was a blast – look at the smoke!’ while a fireball rose from the debris.
One of the voices is believed to be militia commander Igor Strelkov, who then penned a triumphant war cry on Twitter, saying: ‘We warned you – do not fly in “our skyâ€.’
A sickening mobile phone video posted online shows a pall of black smoke billowing over the crash site as three rebels provide an excited commentary.
The extraordinary footage – apparently filmed by the shooters themselves – charts the terrible final moments of the doomed airliner.
Really sickening! :argh: :censored: :puke:

Malaysia Airlines passenger jet shot down over Ukraine, 298 dead
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/07/17/malaysia-airlines-passenger-jet-shot-down-over-ukraine/?intcmp=trending
A Malaysia Airlines passenger plane with 298 aboard was shot down by a surface-to-air missile in Ukraine near the Russian border a day after a Ukrainian military jet was downed, Fox News has confirmed.
The Boeing 777 bound for Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam was shot down at cruising altitude about 35 miles from the border, according to Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's Interior Minister. He said all passengers and crew members were killed. A Reuters correspondent near the scene reported seeing burning wreckage and bodies strewn across a nine-mile debris field. A Ukrainian Emergency official told the news agency body parts and at least 100 bodies were seen in the area.
Death toll up to 298 with 3 babies on board. :( :bawl: :argh:

Some mass murdering jerk offs should pay dearly for this! Sadly, with the pResident we have in office, nobody pays but the citizens of this crumbling country. :argh:

That kind of ADA system...if it's as sophisticaed at they claim...should have an interrogator built into the radar system. That would allow the shooters to tell if the plane was civilian or military.
The chances of this being an accident are minscule.

A phone call between rebels where they are heard to say ‘holy s***’ when they realized their error was intercepted by Ukraine’s security services, according to a Ukrainian newspaper.
Militants nicknamed ‘Major’ and ‘Greek’ were recorded speaking as ‘Major’ inspected the crash site and found only ‘civilian items’.
Also on the line were Igor Bezler, who authorities says is a Russian military intelligence officer and leading commander of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, and a colonel in the main intelligence department of the general headquarters of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, Vasili Geranin.
The unverified transcript was posted online by the Kiev Post newspaper:
Igor Bezler: We have just shot down a plane. Group Minera. It fell down beyond Yenakievo (Donetsk Oblast).
Vasili Geranin: Pilots. Where are the pilots?
IB: Gone to search for and photograph the plane. Its smoking.
VG: How many minutes ago?
IB: About 30 minutes ago.
SBU comment: After examining the site of the plane the terrorists come to the conclusion that they have shot down a civilian plane. The next part of the conversation took place about 40 minutes later.
'Major': These are Chernukhin folks who shot down the plane. From the Chernukhin check point. Those cossacks who are based in Chernukhino.
'Grek': Yes, Major.
'Major': The plane fell apart in the air. In the area of Petropavlovskaya mine. The first '200'. We have found the first '200' - which is code for a civilian.
'Grek': Well, what do you have there?
'Major': In short, it was 100 percent a passenger (civilian) aircraft.
'Grek': Are many people there?
'Major': Holy sh__t! The debris fell right into the yards (of homes).
'Grek': What kind of aircraft?
Official: A third part of the conversation that involves the 'Major' and 'Greek' seems to bring in Cossack commander Nikolay Kozitsin, who suggests that the Malaysian Airlines plane must have been carrying spies

'Major': I haven’t ascertained this. I haven’t been to the main sight. I am only surveying the scene where the first bodies fell. There are the remains of internal brackets, seats and bodies.
'Grek': Is there anything left of the weapon?
'Major': Absolutely nothing. Civilian items, medicinal stuff, towels, toilet paper.
'Grek': Are there documents?
'Major': Yes, of one Indonesian student. From a university in Thompson.
Militant: Regarding the plane shot down in the area of Snizhne-Torez. It’s a civilian one. Fell down near Grabove. There are lots of corpses of women and children. The Cossacks are out there looking at all this.
They say on TV it’s AN-26 transport plane, but they say it’s written Malaysia Airlines on the plane. What was it doing on Ukraine’s territory?
Nikolay Kozitsin: That means they were carrying spies. They shouldn’t be f…cking flying. There is a war going on.

Question. I am reading some conspiracy theories.
A series of increasingly outlandish and sensational claims are being made by the Russian military to explain why flight MH17 crashed in Ukraine,
'An altitude gain was detected for a Ukrainian combat jet, supposedly a Su-25, flying at a distance of 3-5 kilometers from the Boeing,' said Lt. Gen. Andrei Kartapolov.
'The Su-25 ground attack aircraft is capable of destroying air targets at close range with air-to-air missiles.
'We would like Kiev to explain why a combat jet was flying almost at the same altitude and the same time with a passenger plane along the route dedicated for civilian air traffic,' said the general.

Ok. So here is my question. I read somewhere (and I can't find it) that the tail section fell pretty much whole with people in it all the way to the ground. The article basically said this somehow proved that the missile hit it by coming from behind instead of the aircraft flying and the missile coming up to meet it. Said the nose would have been hit first. So my question for you weaponry experts is could there be undeniable evidence from the impact as to whether it was fired air to air or ground to air ?
And I saw this in comments but really only see a bunch of sites I don't know
Award winning former Associated Press reporter Robert Parry has been told by an intelligence source that the United States is in possession of satellite imagery which shows that Ukrainian troops were responsible for the shoot down of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17.
anyone heard that?
I'm just talking about this.........no one jump my ass for asking :-)
-
The problem with these conspiracy theories is that they are originating from Russia...who has a lot of reason to throw the world off their trail on this shoot down.
And since there's been reports of whole sections of the plane having been moved...no solid location on the black boxes Russia is completely free to write their own narrative.
I think it was DAT that said in another thread we've got satellite imagery showing the missile system moved across the border from Russia...into Ukraine...fired it's missile then scooted back across the border.
Part of the problem is that we have imagery and radar tracks that show what happened...but to publicly reveal some of them would cause political unrest in a couple countries whose government doesn't tell their people what we have in their soil.

But with our current administration how do we know what they tell us is the truth?
Do you know anything about what I asked? When they finally get the pieces back and figure out the impact site will that also confirm if it was A2A or G2A missile?

After so many lies from Obama, how can anything he says be believed? He has his cronies in place in every part of the government.

This article might help. (BSS' note: There was an advisory from the FT.com site, when I tried to bring it here, about cutting and pasting. So, I'm respecting their wishes and providing the link instead.)

Ouch!
That piece is from the cockpit area, right below the wind shield(s) in front of the pilot's seat. What confuses me, is that I think I see penetrations inward through the panel from outward, as well as penetrations from inside the panel, flying outward. Possibly more than one missile, or maybe something like the pilot's O2 bottle giving way after being hit.
-
What confuses me, is that I think I see penetrations inward through the panel from outward, as well as penetrations from inside the panel, flying outward.
One of the explanations I heard was that the missile explodes on the outside of craft throwing off projectiles. Similar to what a bomb packed full of nails would do.
-

True. That explains the holes with the edges pulled inward on the panel. However there are several holes on that panel with the edges pulled OUTWARD. An external explosion wouldn't do that. It's possible that in order to ensure a hit, whoever was manning the battery fired TWO missiles, and the penetrations exiting the panel were from the second missile, on the other side of the plane. Or, It's possible that the outward holes are the result of a pressure vessel within the plane yielding to damage it had sustained - an oxygen bottle or something similar.

One of the explanations I heard was that the missile explodes on the outside of craft throwing off projectiles. Similar to what a bomb packed full of nails would do.
That was the explanation I heard from a former fighter jet pilot that was quoted in the FT Article. Surface to air missiles aren't designed to impact with the aircraft. They have proximity warheads designed to explode close to the aircraft in order to send out a shit ton of shrapnel.
From the article:
Two defence analysts in London and a former military pilot who have studied the picture corroborated the claim by a local man, who said he had served in the military, that much of the damage was consistent with a missile strike.
<snip>
Justin Bronk, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London, said: “The size of the shrapnel holes is consistent with what one might expect to see from an SA-11 hit. However, it is difficult to assess the total blast pattern with such a small fragment of fuselage.â€
Another analyst, Douglas Barrie of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said the photographic evidence “was consistent with the kind of damage you would expect to see from the detonation of a high explosive fragmentation warhead of the type commonly used in a SAM systemâ€.
<snip>
One former senior Royal Air Force officer who was shown the picture said he had seen similar damage on aircraft that had been hit by flying shrapnel from rocket attacks on airbases.
All three experts agreed that the large hole in the middle of the fragment was likely to have been punched from the inside out as the aircraft rapidly depressurised when it was hit at a height of 33,000ft last Thursday afternoon.
All three confirmed the part of the aircraft in the photograph was the port side of the Boeing 777’s cockpit. The former RAF officer, who flew fast jets, said that based on the evidence it would appear that the missile exploded in front and to the left of the aircraft.
Anti-aircraft missiles are not designed to score a direct hit as they are targeted to destroy fast, agile fighter jets. Instead, they are designed to explode within about 20m of their target, sending out a cloud of red hot metal to increase the chances of inflicting as much damage as possible.
The former RAF pilot said an explosion in front of the aircraft would be consistent with the interception course a SAM would be expected to follow. “The last thing a ground-launched missile wants to do is play catch-up with an aircraft, it would look to get ahead of its target,†he said.

that's what I was asking about earlier. I had read in some article that that was why they thought it was possible to be a A2A missile because it hit the tail area. heck if I know but I'm enjoying this discussion learning

Except from what they've been able to determine it wasn't hit from behind. It was hit on the left side ahead of the engine. The missiles like the SA-11 manuver to what's called an intercept point....a place in the sky where rocket and plane converge.
And even if the air to air theory were plausible...it wouldn't have hit the tail of the plane. Those are heat seeking missiles and they go for the biggest heat source...which would have been one of the two engines.

Exclusive: Ukraine Asked U.S. for Tech to Counter Russia's Jet Killers
Eli Lake
World News
07.23.14
Last month, Ukraine quietly asked the United States and NATO for sensitive equipment to jam the radars that Russian anti-aircraft systems use to lock their missiles on planes.
As the United States and NATO last month began to publicly acknowledge the sophisticated Russian anti-aircraft systems moving into rebel held areas of eastern Ukraine, the government in Kiev asked for gear that might be used to counter those weapons.
According to a former senior U.S. defense official who has worked closely with Ukraine’s military and a former head of state who has consulted with the government there, Kiev last month requested the radar jamming and detection equipment necessary to evade and counter the anti-aircraft systems Moscow was providing the country’s separatists.
Those anti-aircraft systems were almost certainly used to shoot down MH17, the Malaysian air passenger jet shot out of the sky last Thursday. U.S. officials have pointed the finger at Russia for providing that equipment, though no final assessment has been made of culpability for the incident.
Philip Karber, a former strategy adviser to Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, has conducted detailed assessments of the country’s military since the crisis began this year. Karber returned from the Ukrainian front earlier this month. He told The Daily Beast, “I was told in June by the Ukrainians that one of their top five priorities that they had conveyed to the United States and NATO that month was to get help in electronic warfare,†which gives a military the ability to detect, spoof and jam the radars of enemy anti-aircraft missile batteries.
Mikheil Saakashvili, the former president of the Republic of Georgia, also said that in his meetings this month with Ukraine’s leadership he was told by the country’s national security adviser, Andriy Parubiy, that Ukraine had requested technology to detect anti-aircraft systems. Saakashvili was Georgia’s president when Russia invaded two Georgian republics—Abkhazia and South Ossetia—in 2008 and has offered his views to Ukraine as they face a similar crisis today. “He told me they desperately needed electronic warfare capabilities from the Americans,†Saakashvili told The Daily Beast.

I don't think BHO's dithering had gotten to the point of deciding not to PO Putin.

CBS Evening News, of all places, showed the crash site tonight and compared it to a picture from a few days ago. The rebels have removed large chunks of the plane.
Yep, they shot it down and are now trying to cover their Putin's ass. He shouldn't worry, Obama has his back.
