"Daniel Snyder may be the last person in the world to realize this, but it's just a matter of time until he is forced to do the right thing and change the name."
- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
The U.S. Patent Office ruled that the Washington Redskins name is "disparaging of Native Americans" and federal trademarks for the name have to be canceled.
The 2-1 ruling came Wednesday after a campaign to change the name gained momentum over the past year. The team doesn't immediately lose trademark protection and is allowed to retain it during an appeal.

How much did Obama speaking out against the name affect their decision?

It is interesting - apparently everybody that is cheering this ruling is perfectly happy seeing the full power of the federal government used to ban something that is legal but not politically correct.
I am waiting with baited breath for the follow-on suits related to:
Cleveland Indians
Chicago Blackhawks
Kansas City Chiefs
Atlanta Braves

Illinois, Indiana and every state that derives its name from an indian word.

The implications are staggering!
Using the force of government to Take personal property rights!

It's Washington DC.
I don't think they can come up with a name that doesn't offend someone.

Grover Norquist suggested the Washington Reagans. The left would rather have them called the DC Welfare Cheats.

How about the Washington Thinskins?
-
DC Douchebags?

Mark Levin was holding forth about this on his show this PM, and it sounds like this could be more symbolic than substantial. The Redskins do not lose the right to use the name "Redskins". The Redskins do not lose the ability to sue and win against some one using their name commercially without permission. What the Redskins would lose in such a lawsuit is the ability to prove their right to the name by showing it is a registered trademark; instead, they would have to show they have the right to the name through decades of use, which will be easy to do.
I am not a lawyer, so if I misunderstood Levin (or he got it wrong) I'll gladly listen to some who knows better.
Needless to say this move will be taken to court. Whether the Redskins will be able to get an injunction against this move so that their trademark remains recognized during litigation is an interesting and definite possibility.

The only Indians I've met or heard on Indian Country Radio that complain about the names are Libs. And Libs live/exist in a constant state of offense and victimhood.
This topic came up five or six years ago at a branding. One fellow (native) chimed in with "Are they winning or losing?" :-)

For the record, I'm offended by the team name of the Washington Redskins.
They need to pull Washington out of the name.

The same groups that have gotten after the Redskins also harass the above mentioned teams too.
They protest about the Indians use of Chief Wahoo and have protested against the Braves too.
Theses pasty skinned do gooders tried to force the FSU Seminoles to change their name and stop the pre game ritual of the flaming spear at midfield as well...until the head of Seminole Nation endorsed what FSU does.
I expect that efforts to get other teams with Indian sounding names to change them will be renewed with this ruling against the Redskins. The Patent Court has shown them the way to go now.

The Fighting Illini of the UofI had to get rid of Chief Illiniwek, even though the original headdress used by the mascot had been a gift from an Indian tribe.
