Makeshift bomb explodes at Nogales power plant
NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) - The FBI is investigating an explosion at a power plant in southern Arizona caused by a makeshift bomb.

1. Okay, this one smells like another rightist militia wannabe thing.
Nogales has been in the news over the issue of the undocumented immigrant minors being held there.
But there is as yet no evidence to back my hunch.

Okay, I'm not a member of the bomb owning community but, and perhaps this is just naïveté on my part, isn't pretty much every bomb that someone would set off at a power plant a "makeshift bomb".
I mean, are there many retail brand-name bomb dealers around (other than, say, General Dynamics)?
I mean, even if someone had gotten their hands on some military ordnance, it seems that one would still need to rig up some sort of detonation trigger mechanism.
Is the term "makeshift" conveying some sort of information about the bomb in this usage, which would not be apparent from context?
Are we talking about high explosives, or some sort of black powder bomb? That alone would convey information about the sophistication and means of the culprits.

Whatever his/her political views, I do appreciate jberryhill's sense of humor in pointing out that bombs are not exactly consumer products, and thus "makeshift" is an almost superfluous adjective.
For my part, I'm fine with waiting to learn the views of the perp(s) before pointing fingers. I guess DU-folks' haste comes from not wanting to let an opportunity be ruined by facts.

Why wasn't the attack on the substation out in California covered last year? A well coordinated attack by snipers on the power grid and the media ignored it.
