Michael and Melanie Bellanger Boyer, transplanted Parisians who live in a snug one-bedroom in the West 90s, are members of what social scientists sometimes call the “forgotten middle.â€
Mr. Boyer, 29, earns $90,000 a year as a financial auditor. His wife, 31, earns $21,000 working at an animal shelter, where a modest salary is offset by generous benefits, a boon since the birth of a daughter, Nora, in January.
Last August, the couple moved to a 500-square-foot space for which the rent is $2,700. With such attractions as exposed brick, an ornately carved fireplace and a location just steps from Central Park, the apartment was the nicest and most affordable one they could find. But the hefty rent check they write every month takes an increasing toll.
“If it weren’t for the high rent, I could afford to stay home with the baby,†Ms. Bellanger Boyer said, noting that the family’s monthly expenses now include $2,000 for child care. “But I needed to keep my job because we need my benefits, and so we had to put Nora in day care.â€

3. i can't afford to live on my own in my city
even a shit studio goes for more than half of what i make.
I am not sure what a shit studio is, but can't imagine anyplace that doesn't cost more than half of addled fizzgig's part-time 7-11 income.

Wait a daggone moment here. Ain't it the libbies that are constantly preaching we should all live in the big city instead of the suburbs or rural so we can decrease automobile usage?
Well screw that! Paying $2700 a month for rent is just not gonna happen with me... and I don't care if it is a mansion type apartment. I'd live in a damned tent out in the woods before I would pay that.

Most normal people, even those who live in crappy little bungalows like Pam Dawson, have an attached garage about the size of that $2700 apartment.
So many democrats live in these god-awful blue slum cities, I think that may be one reason why they think America is such a terrible place.

So, assuming that $90,000 + $21,000 is actually take-home pay, they're spending $56,400 a year just on rent and child care, or a tad over 50% of their total household income, just for a tiny cubbyhole and the must-be-fabulous-to-be-worth-the-net-loss benefits package on her job. That's an incredibly shitty allocation which precludes saving, and considering the prices in metro NYC, they'd have to be practically camping in that place and completely reliant on public transportation (Which adds up to a pretty considerable expense itself, over the course of a year, if you have to use it for everything, and also subtly restricts where and when one travels).
Of course, if that's gross pay and not take-home pay, with Federal and NY State income tax and NYC's additional income tax, they're just plain screwed, and living out a losing proposition.

This confuses me too.
For example, apparently Skippy, the NYC_SKP primitive, lives in a 12'x24' "condominium" on the beach in California, for which he pays an arm and a leg. Being a governmental employee, of course he makes good money, but apparently real-estate prices are way out of line.
Now, I realize that California may have amenities that other places don't, such as maybe winters aren't as bad there, as they are in other places.
But surely there's a point where one says, "To Hell with the amenities, the rent (or mortgage) is too damned high," and one moves somewhere else, where it's cheaper.

Silicon Valley housing is also expensive. But it's not that expensive! He and a couple of other guys share a 3BR 3BA townhouse in a decent neighborhood. Their rent is on the order of $2500/mo.

I pay $300/month for a 1,250 sq.ft house on 4 acres of land here about 100 miles south of I B Perky. Some months, my electric bill is higher than my mortgage thanks to Barry Bigears shutting down power plants and coal mines! :rant:
I own a 26 foot camper that is half the size of their "home", bought it new for around $14K. They could own the same or better in less than a year for what they pay in rent. I know they are dimorats, because a conservative wouldn't be stupid enough to pay that much for rent for something he doesn't nor will never own.
I hope they starve...

In Manhattan, these dimwits paying $2700 for a closet-sized apartment may find an identical apartment next door, rent-controlled, where an extended family of unemployed 0bamaites live for maybe $500 a month.

The Law of Supply and Demand cannot be repealed by government. If it tries, it screws something up. NYC's rent control laws make owning rental properties - in the long term - unprofitable. That, also long term, reduces supply. Demand, OTOH, is not similarly reduced, as companies move their lower-paying jobs out of NYC but NYC then becomes a center of high-paying executive and marketing jobs. Reduced supply plus same or increased demand means homes are scarce and high priced for newcomers.

It seems like a normal premium, except your employer isn't paying it, it will pay to kill your baby, it will pay if you want your dick cut off, even if you're a woman, but it comes with an annual six-thousand-dollar deductible. You will also have trouble finding a doctor or hospital that will accept it.
Medical insurance designed by democrat politicians is like that famous horse designed by a committee.
