Title: Songs that shocked/surprised/disturbed once you figured out what they meant
Post by: SSG Snuggle Bunny on May 24, 2014, 11:42:31 AM
Songs you blithely sang along to but made you go, "Oh...OH!.......oh."  For example:

Aqualung by Jethro Tull

Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot

I was under the impression since I was a kid that it was about heroin. Is that just BS?

Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds is not about LSD according to Lennon. He says his son Julian showed him a picture he drew in school, John asked him what it was and Julian said it was Lucy in the sky with diamonds and John thought it would make a neat song title. At least that his Lennon's claim.

I've heard that, too--just within a month or two.

"America was formed in England by sons of US servicemen who were stationed there. Lead singer Dewey Bunnell wrote this when he was 19. Although the song is commonly misinterpreted about being on drugs, it is not: Bunnell based the images in the lyrics on things he saw while visiting the US."
