Social Security, Treasury target taxpayers for their parents’ decades-old debts

A few weeks ago, with no notice, the U.S. government intercepted Mary Grice’s tax refunds from both the IRS and the state of Maryland. Grice had no idea that Uncle Sam had seized her money until some days later, when she got a letter saying that her refund had gone to satisfy an old debt to the government — a very old debt.

When Grice was 4, back in 1960, her father died, leaving her mother with five children to raise. Until the kids turned 18, Sadie Grice got survivor benefits from Social Security to help feed and clothe them.

Now, Social Security claims it overpaid someone in the Grice family — it’s not sure who — in 1977. After 37 years of silence, four years after Sadie Grice died, the government is coming after her daughter. Why the feds chose to take Mary’s money, rather than her surviving siblings’, is a mystery.

The aggressive effort to collect old debts started three years ago — the result of a single sentence tucked into the farm bill lifting the 10-year statute of limitations on old debts to Uncle Sam.

Sounds like some FOAs in the Congress are trying to cover for their master's overspending by finding new ways to confiscate money from the public.

Yet race pimp Al Sharpton still owes a couple million or so in back taxes. Thousands of federal employees owe back taxes and penalties, but the fed doesn't care about them.

As of Oct. 11 2013, General Motors Still Owes US Government $15B.

Seems to me going after an individual is a waste of time when the government can get billions from ONE bailed out company.

Actually, just the reverse, sir. The average Joe Taxpayer doesn't have a stable of high-powered lawyers who trade Congress-shits like baseball cards. Those deadbeat, tax cheating corporate entities like Gub'mint Motors an Gub'mint Electric do, and have no problem dropping $500 million to keep things tied up in court for years, over a $5 million tax bill.

This is absurd.  A first year law student could win this case.  There is no way to hold relatives liable for the debt of another.  That's just daft.

Across the nation, hundreds of thousands of taxpayers who are expecting refunds this month are instead getting letters like the one Grice got, informing them that because of a debt they never knew about — often a debt incurred by their parents — the government has confiscated their check.

This is just flat out wrong. Read the article. Sad.

This ought to wire the dummies up!!!! Ought to wire up the conservatives too.

What I want to know is what fool politician inserted that in the bill... read the article. From what I read, from other sources, Bush vetoed and was overridden by the congress. Dunno. Too busy right now to look it up.

Nobody wants to take responsibility for it.  Everyone is pointing to "the bureaucracy."  I just can't believe this is happening.  I also can't believe it wasn't quickly fixed.

Are they going to make Obama pay the government for his freeloading aunt and uncle?

It's in the news that they're immediately stopping this.  I think I found it through RealClearPolitics.

I saw it in the Washington Post this morning.  Is the federal government so incompetent and grossly bloated they can't find out who proposed the law?  At this point, it's just a bunch of flunkys pointing fingers at each other.

It obviously is not little barry's fault, the government is way too big for one man to handle (http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/348346/scarborough-goes-axelrod-spinning-ap-tapping-%E2%80%98save-somebody-else-buy-that%E2%80%99).

This is what happens when you pass a bill so you can find out what's in it.
