What is the worst thing you ever ate?

I'm always stumbling into new forums on DU. There are so many!

What is the worst thing you have ever ate? I had beondegi once and thought something died in my mouth. How about you??

Quote
Beondegi (Korean: 번데기) are a popular snack food in Korean cuisine. Literally meaning "chrysalis" or "pupa" in Korean, Beondegi are steamed or boiled silkworm pupae which are seasoned and eaten as a snack. Beondegi are often served by street vendors, as well as in restaurants and drinking establishments. They are also sold in cans in grocery stores and convenience stores, but they must be boiled in water before serving. Beondegi is not always sold in the market and is usually sold from street vendors, although it is possible to buy the live variant for personal preparation.

1. Without a doubt, it was lutfisk. Had it once in Minnesota.

Quote
Lutefisk (Norwegian) or Lutfisk (Swedish) pronounced [lʉːtfesk] in Northern and Central Norway, [lʉːtəfɪsk] in Southern Norway, [lʉːtfɪsk] in Sweden and in Finland (Finnish: lipeäkala)) is a traditional dish of some Nordic countries. It is made from aged stockfish (air-dried whitefish) or dried/salted whitefish (klippfisk) and lye (lut). It is gelatinous in texture, and has an extremely strong, pungent odor. Its name literally means "lye fish."

2. A red raspberry jello/crushed tomato creation topped with a mayo/whipped cream topping

that my MIL made. There were 14 of us (all family) at her house for dinner. I've never seen every single one of us trying to find someplace to ditch a plate full of food before. The only people that ate it were my MIL and FIL.

3. I'll probably generate some negativity for this, but

it was either Indian or Nepalese food. I've been to both types of restaurants, and in each case, wound up with slimy-textured, rotten-tasting "food" that could have been previously-eaten and regurgitated by someone else for all I know. Maybe I just had a really unlucky choice, and everything else in their culinary culture is fantastic, but each had at least one kind of meal on the menu that was hideously dreadful. Enough so that I vowed never to try return to an Indian or Nepalese restaurant.

On the other hand, one of the best meals I ever had was at an Ethiopean restaurant. Some incredibly spicy shredded beef dish dipped out with pancake-like bread.

Pureed peas and pureed carrots layered in stripes into a loaf pan, then sliced.  Thought I was going to die.

I'd have to say it was at a Middle Eastern restaurant my Mother took me to. Everything had some kind of red crap on it that tasted like sawdust. Bitter sawdust.   :puke:

Lutefisk! Never ate it, but I had to endure the stench years ago when the neighbors (elderly Swedish immigrants) prepared some...(http://www.conservativecave.com/Smileys/default/puke.gif)

I once bit into a brain sandwich.  Someone's Grandma had made it.  I didn't know it when I bit into it.  Queasy.

Yes, but they sure called it something different than what I expected:

14. Hákarl, The Icelandic "treat".

The smell is pretty offensive, and the taste isn't that wonderful. It has an underlying fish taste, but I couldn't get past the ammonia aftertaste. I ate a bite out of courtesy and curiosity with some hiking companions, but refused a second offering even though I was somewhat famished.

If a DUmmie won't eat it, maybe it should be outlawed.

Stinky fruit -----Some kind of something that grows like Brussels Sprouts on the side of a tree in Asia.

Really weird, smells like dirty socks or feet.    Very expensive up here, someone went to Boston to buy a couple and brought it in to work.

I took a sniff and tried a very small amount, and the next day was offered another slice, what the heck I ate it and on the third day I loved it.

Then some worker told me that the fruit had some kind of enzyme that speeded up the heart, had a grandparent that died from eating too much.

I was on heart medication at that time and that was the last bite of Stinky Fruit I ever ate, but the last thing one expects can become addicting.

17. Probably bitter melon

Though the fish sandwich I got from Arby's last week was pretty damn disgusting. I rarely eat fast food, and that reminded me why.

You go to Arby's and order a fish sandwich?

We don't call 'em DUmmies for nothing.

There is a restaurant called "Grits and Pizza" in a town south of here.  Their menu is exactly what is claims.

The shrimp and grits look pretty good.  I'll have to drop by over the weekend.  It's got to beat fast food.

I suppose it depends where you go, if you get hominy or yellow corn.  Yellow corn is closer to polenta than hominy grits.

Still haven't had good hominy grits.  Yellow cornmeal can be dressed up six ways to Sunday and is almost always good.

I'm not sure, but those might be fighting words here.

Has NHSparky weighed in here?  He's eaten some very, um, unusual things in his time.

Grits are great with bacon, cheese, and butter.  :)

Anyway, the worst thing I have ate was in the Vietnamese mountains and was hedge hog.  There was hardly any meat and tons of gristle.

Best thing I ate while I was there was at a Cobra restaurant.  They brought the Cobra snakes in and chopped their heads off right in front of us.  Then prepared them like 10 different ways, pretty much every dish was good.

What's the point in cooking something if you HAVE to add something else to it to make it edible?

Curiously, this does not appeal to me, and while I was starving just a few seconds ago, my appetite as strangely fled.

We grew up just eating them with sugar and butter.   It wasn't until later in life I discovered all the other fun stuff you can add to them.
