1. a few answers
1- Your friend might want to get his LCSW license number and look him up on the state licensure site. Just a thought, not mandatory, might ease his or her mind.
2- The coaching thing is a more socially-valued way of saying therapy. It's basically therapy repackaged. There's nothing wrong with that, but there's also nothing wrong with saying therapy or therapist, imho. All kinds of people go to therapy, even well-adjusted people who are going through grieving, a divorce, etc. An obvious point that needs to be stated over and over again.
3- Your friend needs to have a frank chat with the "coach" about his or her goals, and needs to reassess progress at timely intervals. That goes for garden variety therapy as well.

2. Thanks, steve.
He's at the place where a frank chat with the coach sounds appropriate, so I'll encourage it.

I swear.
As recently as seven or eight years ago, one never read the word "frank" or "frankly" on Skins's island--meaning of course direct, straightforward, sincere, whatever.
But for some peculiar reason, about the time the DUmpster came into being, the primitives latched onto it.

About 18 months ago we in a small town had a THEROPIST move in and set up shop. He specialized in sexual problems. With his silver tongue in a few months he convinced the police, the courts and his peers to send him patients that had a problem.
All went well until he ran afoul of the neighbors, seems he rented out an apartment and the neighbors became up set over the traffic coming and going to this place late at night and even day time.
Dumb shit shouldered have rented out in the country not in a town with lots of kids or near by neighbors.
It was interesting to read in the local paper the raid on his rented apartment as both men and women jumped out of windows and doors.-------Drugs were found and this so called Therapist was found to not even have a high school diploma.
Just an average run of the mill con man, these creeps are everywhere.
