What would be your ideal job?
I was asked that today in a performance appraisal. It was a question they were asking everyone, along with "What can we do to renew excitement in your current job?" I know that last question is directly related to not being able to give any promotions and the merit pool being only about 1% this year.
What would you have said?
I had no real answer other than I like to be creative, but I can't even really be that anymore (web design/light development) since everything is templified and done with predefined includes. I told them I like working on large systems that have many parts rather than just doing 1-up payment forms. At least then I get to use my brain. Probably was not the best answer, but my supervisor understood what I meant.

13. Actually, she had said it could be anything at all, not necessarily IT related.
And darn it, the only semi-pc thing I could come up with was what I said.
Now that I think of it, if I could make a living doing anything I'd like, I would like to be an artist, primarily a sculptor (One of a kind, polymer clay).

15. I have tried to be very supportive to my daughter in her career choice,
Told her to keep as many doors open as possible while she gets her degree, then work at finding something she is passionate about. If she could do that, that's half the uphill battle of leading a happy life.
Myself, on the other hand, I started out going to business school because there was no money in art education. I did enjoy typing, editing, and helping with PC support, which led me to this job. Originally it was all web design (which I really enjoyed). Unfortunately, now it's morphed into mainly coding credit card forms and applying templates to everything, little to no design at all and no leeway in what goes into the code. My dept is 4 little peoplebots churning out forms as quick as possible. I tell myself "At least I have a job" and "I'm close to retirement age". Both true, but in my next life, I want something more fun (artist, sculptor) -- the problem always comes back to money

Doing high profile PI work in Atlanta was a blast. Car chases, stakeouts, counter surveillance... It was more fun than I've seen in any movie or tv show.

But I'd probably get into big trouble. I hate paperwork and I'd be prone to sharing and consuming much of my own production, leaving little left to sell. (But maybe I'd have many more friends...)
For now I grow entirely legal edible plants and only occasionally make alcoholic beverages. (Two liter soda bottles are good for the fizzy sorts; they don't explode like glass but the beer snobs are not going to pay a premium for that sort of "craft" beer.)
My family is full of artists, but nobody has "made a living" doing that, except for maybe my grandfather who was as much an artist with titanium as he was an engineer. Even so, I think he'd have rather been working in Hollywood, but the high-tech glamor of the time was in the space program. Parts he made carried astronauts to the moon and back while George Lucas was still a kid scratching "special effects" onto film with a magnifying glass and a stylus.
For environmental reasons I think we could get rid of half the jobs in the U.S.A. and share the remaining work among everyone, leaving us all to enjoy near zero unemployment, with long weekends and long vacations for all.
Our current notions of "economic productivity" are making the lives of many people miserable and severely damaging the natural environment.

I'm opening a pie shop.
Just clinched the deal with the property owner today.
It will be structured as a "social enterprise" with all profits donated to music programs in the local schools.
It will not be just a pie shop, but a music venue where local students and local acoustic musicians may play together and play for each other and play for others to hear.

You know, it's too bad that came to a sudden stop, grasswire Judy opening that pie-and-jam shoppe.
It got off track even before it got on track, because the pie-and-jam primitive's guardians pointed out that by the laws of Oregon, incompetents can't sign contracts or other legal documents, and none of them were willing to sign anything on her behalf.

Gee, Ron. You have obviously been looking in all the wrong places, or else not looking at all.
In my job, which, by the way, is a GREAT job that pays really, REALLY well, I travel all over the country. See all kinds of interesting stuff, meet all kinds of interesting people, work with all kinds of neat, cutting edge power engineering paraphernalia . And the pay! Whoa! If someone had asked how much money I would like to make, back when I started out I probably would have said "My age in salary". Which was considered good in the eighties, above average.
To think that now, in my sixties, I make well above that kind of number, 3 times more, work half of the time, pull full salary all the time, spend none of my own money and see the world on someone else's dime. It's everyone's dream job.
And to think I got it because of an overheard conversation and a brief "excuse me, but..." when I was twenty.

Here's a tip, sparky. Try increasing your value and rendering greater service, and stop looking for something for nothing.
Man, I love that we live in a country with a system where people like me, who work their ass off, get massive rewards and lazy, useless pieces of flotsam like you are left fighting over my table scraps.
Do you like to travel, Ron Obvious? I'm heading to Costa Rica on vacation in 2 months. Mountainside resort in Manuel Antonio National Park; $250 a night. I'll be sipping Pina Coladas and banging my girlfriend on vacation while you're licking cheetoes off your fingers and watching Game of Thrones, wondering why you never get to go anywhere.
