GM recalls 1.3M vehicles for power steering defect
General Motors issued a new separate recall today of more than 1.5 million cars for a steering defect and the company now estimates the recent spate of recalls will cost it about $750 million.

The power steering defect, which covers a range of compact and midsize cars from 2004 through 2010 model years, is not related to the expanded ignition switch recall — but some of the vehicles affected by the new recall are also affected by the ignition switch issue.

GM did not immediately disclose whether the power steering defect caused any deaths, but a quick review of complaints filed with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration showed some crashes and injuries.

The new recall comes a day before GM CEO Mary Barra is expected to testify before Congress about the company’s failure to fix the faulty ignition switches.

The latest recall expands the number of vehicles GM has recalled in the last two months to about 4.5 million.

What happened to "Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is ALIVE," DUmbasses? (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024760971)

Funny how many millions of worthless turd union monkeys DU was crowing about having jobs, but I bet NOT ONE OF THEM IS in ANY way responsible for ANY of the recall, any coverups, etc.

Guess what, liberal ****nuts?

:ownit:

Except wait - you can't afford one in this 0bamaconomy. Guess you'll have to LEASE IT.

3. For years there were TV repair shops all across the US

Then foreign makes started selling televisions, and they went to lengths to make their televisions very reliable and easy to install so that they didn't have to establish dealer network. As a result, the foreign manufacturers took over the television market.

It should happen with cars too.

I remember the old TVs and Radios of the past , most had these big sucker tubes of some sort that needed to  be replaced now and then.

We came into some money, a good size bonus at work and went out shopping for a big screen TV.   We found a huge TV at the time a Panasonic on sale for $1,200 bucks. Huge it takes up a good 2 1/2 feet from the wall if not more.   This was mid 1990's  and it is still so far going strong, only problem is the space it takes up. We are just waiting for it to pass away so we can get something the same screen size and flat to the wall that will give us back the space it takes up.

Darn thing is  close to being an antique, never had a problem with it, who ever made it did a good job, it has out lasted 2 cars and a couple of relatives.

Uh, wrong and wrong, DUmmy.

Solid-state technology (American) got rid of the repair shops.

Labor unions (American) got rid of the manufacturers.

GM's Safe, New Switches Have Same Part Number As Old, Dangerous Ones

Quote
Oh, General Motors. Your decisions a decade ago just keep biting you in the ass today, don't they? As The General recalls 1.4 million U.S. cars for a faulty ignition switch tied to 12 deaths, complications may arise because the correct part has the same number as the defective one.

In other words, it's possible the recalled Cobalts could get "fixed" with the same faulty part they had in the first place because there's no way of telling which is which without taking them apart or checking their manufacturing history.

One engineer interviewed by Reuters said sifting the faulty part from the correct one would be "near impossible," as "there is nothing to distinguish them."

GM's response? They're working on it.

At least their union pensions are safe.

Wasn't it just a few weeks, or a couple of months ago that the UAW cash in a buttload of GM Shares? And now the recall gets announced?

Maybe its just suspicious me thinking this is just a little coinky dink. I could be wrong.

But somehow, I think not.

That's really not uncommon.  When we update a part drawing, we don't start completely over, it's just noted in the title block along with the same part number.  Makes things much more efficient that way.

Napa/Carquest change various part numbers every week. The parts in stock remain the same.

Hm, kind of curious that GM names a woman as CEO, then a short time later she is before congress to testify on a recall.  Hey DUmmies, she was set up to take the fall for this.

Pretty uncommon in my 40 years of engineering. A drawing and a part are two different things. The part number can remain the same if it is fully interchangeable but there is always a revision letter along with it. For example 14689-01NC to 14689-01A.

right.... on the drawing, not the part.  We've only shown the revision on the drawing as said before.  The guy out on the floor doesn't care which one it is as long as it fits.

"I am opposed to the death penalty, but to every rule there is usually an exception, and in this case I hope the criminals at General Motors will be arrested and made to pay for their pre-meditated decision to take human lives for a lousy ten bucks," he wrote.

Of course he blames GWB.   :whatever:

Beat me to it.  ^ This.

If there is a major difference between the original part and the new part, then a new qualification and reliability test is required at least in the defense and medical manufactures world.

who says there's a major difference between the two GM parts? we could be talking about an extra tab put on in the new one

One of the articles mentioned a different spring was used in the new vs. old identical part #.
The spring force was intentionally increased to overcome a defect they had discovered in the original qualification/reliability testing and that change would be a major enough difference that it should have triggered a new qualification/reliability test.

DUmmies are mostly pissed that the government spent money saving GM and the unions that could have bought the DUmmies a lot of freebies.

On another note, none of the DUmmie's conservative relatives were killed by the defect leaving the DUmmie to collect from a large lawsuit settlement. Their really pissed about that....a double loss.

The worst thing is that GovMtr hid it and guess who died? Women. The ignition switch was overwhelmed by the weight of women's key sets. All it would have taken is a public message to warn people, women in particular, that a heavy key set could in some circumstances turn the ignition switch to off. I find it amazing that anybody in the Obama-democrat regime is completely unable to tell the truth, even if doesn't hurt them.

Talk about a war on women from the progressive fascists in the democrat party.

The GM keys we got were (I don't know) flexible something or other that would eventual break and you would lose the key. So I drilled a hole in the center of the big flat metal part for the key ring.....no problem if the weight is in the center of the ring.

BUT there is a problem with doing that if your key is one of those with a computer chip in it.

That wouldn't qualify for a new part number for us.  Just a revision note on the drawing and it's done.
