Obama Defends Iraq Invasion: At Least America 'Sought' To Get UN Backing

<snip>
President Barack Obama defended the American invasion of Iraq Wednesday in a high-profile speech to address the Russian takeover of Crimea. Russian officials, Obama noted, have pointed to the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq as an example of "Western hypocrisy."
Obama struggled, however, in his attempt to defend the legality of the invasion. The war was unsanctioned by the United Nations, and many experts assert it violated any standard reading of international law. But, argued Obama, at least the U.S. tried to make it legal. "America sought to work within the international system," Obama said, referencing an attempt to gain U.N. approval for the invasion -- an effort that later proved to be founded on flawed, misleading and cherry-picked intelligence. The man who delivered the presentation to the U.N., then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, has repeatedly called it a "blot" on his record.
Obama, in his speech, noted his own opposition to the war, but went on to defend its mission.
"We did not claim or annex Iraq's territory. We did not grab its resources for our own gain," Obama argued. In fact, the U.S. forced Iraq to privatize its oil industry, which had previously been under the control of the state, and further required that it accept foreign ownership of the industry. The effort to transfer the resources to the control of multinational, largely U.S.-based oil companies has been hampered in part by the decade of violence unleashed by the invasion.
Obama's assertion also hinges on how broadly one construes the word "our."...

There you go, DUmmies. Your Lord and Savior has officially defended the Iraq War to the entire world. You may now shut the hell up about it, forever, since you famously tell us that it racist to contradict him. (http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=4731723)
That is all -**** you very much.

I imagine that will cause some mental short circuits. I can't wait to see how smoothly the transition of thought goes over there.

225. An overwhelming number of Crimeans voted for that annex to Russia. A majority of Crimeans ARE
Russian or descended from Russians. There is just NO WAY to try to compare Crimea/Russia to Iraq/USA and the very fact that the President is trying to 'explain' demonstrates that the ONLY people on the planet who do not understand the Crimea situation are right here in the US listening to the Corporate media.
OK dipshit. And there is a comparison right here in the USA, in 1861, when the southern states voted for secession.

And why are there a bunch of Russians in Crimea?
During World War II, the Stalin regime used the resources of a highly organized state with a modern rail system to rapidly exile entire nations from their ancestral homelands. The Soviet government targeted the Muslim nationalities of the Caucasus and Crimea for deportation in their entirety. The Soviet political police, NKVD (Peoples Commissariat of Internal Affairs) exiled the Karachays, Chechens, Ingush, Balkars, Crimean Tatars, and Meskhetian Turks to Kazakhstan, Central Asia, Siberia, and other remote areas of the USSR in 1943 and 1944.
The Crimean Tatars and Meskhetian Turks, however, remained exiled far from their roots. Only after 1989, could a significant number of Crimean Tatars return to their ancestral homeland. Today more than 250,000 (more than 50% of the total population in the former USSR) Crimean Tatars reside in the Crimea.[3] Although they still suffer from discrimination and exclusion in their homeland, the Crimean Tatars have made significant progress in repairing the damage inflicted upon their national existence by Stalin.

270. Between this and the Manhattan nuke comment
It's been a real :thatsright: week for his speeches.
It's an enormous thread; looks like a fun one just to pick random posts. ProSense and Vanilla jump into the fray right away, spinning away in their particularly nasty ways.

272. Definitely. If I didn't know better, I'd wonder if Obama had been hitting the scotch bottle cabinet
too much lately. It is getting hard to explain at this point.

If I were one of Dear Leader's handlers, I'd be phoning up Skin's to find out who NonSense, Vanilla, and other BOGers were and say "Please tell them to stop! Their weak attempts to prop us this administration is killing us!"

It's absolutely amazing to me . . .
I sat on this board in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and watched the debate about whether or not to invade Iraq. To a person, TO A PERSON, EVERYONE on DU agreed that this was a terrible idea and it was all about oil and that we were being lied to about the reasons for ILLEGALLY invading another country having nothing to do with 9/11. TO. A. PERSON.
It's more than amazing, it is, as others have said, VOMIT-INDUCING that now, since President Obama is defending it, NOW it's justified. If there is any better definition of hypocrisy by those who defend PO whether he's right or wrong to now try and justify this invasion just because the president says so then I don't know what it is.
THIS is what blind loyalty does. You throw out your own common sense, your own integrity of thought and belief, your own logical conclusions just to throw blind allegiance to a person/ideology. It's nothing less than despicable and that's being kind.
The debate is now over, DUmmies. Your Messiah said the war was OK (don't worry...he was against it before he was for it), so SHUT UP. (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024733984)
If you disagree with 0bama, DUmmies, it's only because he's black. After five years, we conservatives know that very well. Now it's your turn.

The DUmmies don't like the speech because they're racists.
Well gee, that's what they've allways said about anyone critical of this president. They really don't read what they type, do they.

Yeah...the vote outcome is all thanks to the Miracle of Ethnic Cleansing in the post-war USSR.
