John Kerry: Russia has until Monday to reverse course in Ukraine

Secretary of State John Kerry warned of serious repercussions for Russia on Monday if last-ditch talks over the weekend to resolve the crisis in Ukraine failed to persuade Moscow to soften its stance.
Kerry will travel to London for a Friday meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ahead of a Sunday referendum vote in the Crimea region to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation.
U.S. and European officials argue that Moscow is orchestrating the referendum and waging an intimidation campaign with thousands of Russian troops controlling the region. If Russian-backed lawmakers in Crimea go through with the Sunday referendum, Kerry said the U.S. and its European allies will not recognize it as legitimate under international law.
The U.S. and Europe on Monday would then unite to impose sanctions on Russia, Kerry told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee Thursday during a hearing on the State Department's budget.
“There will be a response of some kind to the referendum itself,†Kerry said. “If there is no sign [from Russia] of any capacity to respond to this issue ... there will be a very serious series of steps on Monday.â€

Actually, what they could do would be to slap sanctions on some of the Russian oligarchs that Putin is controlled by . . . Any bets on whether or not that will happen? :whatever:

How far is Europe willing to go with sanctions? Any sanctions on Russia will hurt their economy also. OTOH, Putin could decide to impose his own sanctions and cut off oil and gas.

If the EU & US decides to be a bad ass with sanctions, this could be a twofer for Putin. Putin could curtail gas shipments to Europe and the Europeans would blame the idiot in the W.H. for not supporting the Keystone Pipeline. The K.P.would help Europe reduce their dependence on Russian energy.
Sanctions have never worked; Putin is probably having a good chuckle with threats from two wimps, Kerry & Obummer.

Your last sentence is why you haven't heard a peep out of the EU over what Putin is doing. Gazprom supplies natural gas to most of the EU. Putin knows that.

Right Sector leader: Kiev should be ready to sabotage Russian pipelines in Ukraine

The leader of ultranationalist group Right Sector, Dmitry Yarosh, has threatened to destroy Russian pipelines on Ukrainian territory if a diplomatic solution is not reached with Moscow.
In a fiery address loaded warmongering rhetoric, Yarosh told his followers they should be ready to resist the Russian “occupiers.†The leader of the Right Sector made his address to the coup-appointed government in Kiev, as Crimeans made their way to ballots Sunday to vote to join with Russia or to remain within Ukraine.
“We cannot allow the enemy to carry out a blitzkrieg attack on Ukrainian territory. We mustn’t forget that Russia makes money sending its oil through our pipelines to the West. We will destroy these pipelines and deprive our enemy of its source of income,†Yarosh said.
Continuing the bellicose rhetoric, Yarosh appealed to his followers, urging them to take up arms against Russia, if a diplomatic solution cannot be reached.

95% of those that voted were in favor of joining Russia. What part of that overwhelming majority does not Obammy and his white boot licking counterpart, Kerry, understand. Between these two and thunder thighs, they have created a big foreign debacle and these countries hate us for meddling in their affairs. Let's just mind our own business for a change.
