WaPo, WSJ Slam Obama's Response To Putin's Aggression

The editorial boards of the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal on Sunday criticized President Barack Obama's foreign policy approach as Russian forces cemented their control of Ukraine's Crimea region...writing that Obama's foreign policy since assuming the presidency has been "based more on how he thinks the world should operate than on reality." While noting that Obama is not responsible for Russian President Vladimir Putin's occupation of Crimea, the Post faulted the President for his "urge to pull back" on the heels of the Iraq War.

Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday that Putin's actions were "19th century behavior in the twenty-first century," but the Post argued the United States can't continue to pretend that leaders like Putin, Syria's Bashar al-Assad and China's Xi Jinping care for the rules of the modern world order.

"Military strength, trustworthiness as an ally, staying power in difficult corners of the world such as Afghanistan — these still matter, much as we might wish they did not," the editorial board wrote...WSJ's editorial suggested Obama could do more to rebuff Russia's advance than to simply condemn the deployment of troops to the Crimean peninsula:

A White House statement on the call said the U.S. "condemns" the Crimean takeover and called it a "breach of international law." That will have the Kremlin quaking. The only concrete U.S. action was to suspend participation in preparations for June's G-8 summit in Sochi. Seriously? Mr. Obama and every Western leader ought to immediately pull the plug on that junket and oust Russia from the club of democracies.

The newspaper also slammed the "media counsel of defeat" for pushing the narrative that the West has few options for dealing with Moscow, even though the solutions it offered in its editorial -- reconsidering trade and banking relationships, visa bans, asset freezes -- were similar to those options Secretary of State John Kerry outlined on the Sunday show circuit.

Translation: The Obama administration isn't rushing to war fast enough.

I don't see any conservatives calling for war. You continually have to make up lies, don't you?

Quote from:

1. WAR! WAR! WAR! BANG! BANG!

From where?

Quote from:
sabrina 1

2. Same old game, Repubs attack Dems for being wimps, Dems react emotionally and vote for devastating wars to prove they're not wimps.

Can we get some grown ups to run things in this world for a change?

As someone in the State Dept said a while ago, 'we can't kill our way to peace'.

Obviously since we've been doing that going on 14 years and we're told we are 'less safe now than ever'.

Has Palin weighed in yet?

You are wimps. How is pointing that out making you do anything?

Quote from:
cali

3. I don't think you've translated it correctly

the correct translation is:

No way you're going to cut the defense budget

Quote from:
ProSense

6. Republicans want war.

"No way you're going to cut the defense budget."

Preserving the defense budget is simply a means to lining defense contractors pockets.

Quote from:
cali

8. Republicans want profits. Yes, they want war but I think there's an immediate goal here and it's to make it difficult to cut the defense budget.

The clueless talking to another fool.

Quote from:
cali

10. and I have to add: You've demonstrated that you want war if President Obama proposes it.

You really just want whatever the President wants. Keystone? If he approves it, you'll defend it. Syria? When it looked like that was an imminent military excursion, you were for it.

For you, the earth revolves around President Obama

Quote from:

12. Seriously, what the **** is your point? You're freaking out about a ****ing post about editorials.

Did this OP require three ****ing posts and your nasty ****ing insinuations?

Broken clock; twice a day.

As dumb as cali is, even she's right about Prononsense being a Dear Leader cult worshipper.

Quote from:

5. So long as Europe depends upon Russian natural gas, our hands are tied.

And Europe does, in fact, rely on Russian natural gas. As such, I consider these editorials ill-informed or outright dangerous and propagandistic.

So now pointing out that Dear Leader is an incompetent idiot is "dangerous and propagandistic."

And the only "ill-informed" are those who fail to recognize that Dear Leader is an incompetent idiot.

Do try and grow up, Laelth.

Quote from:

9. However, Russia can be hurt economically, and sanctions would hurt them

Yeah, I can tell Putin's all worried about what little Barry might do.  :whatever:

Quote from:
Laelth

11. Sure, but what good would that do?

Other than the obvious ... and that is to prove that Democrats can be as muscular, as stupid, as aggressive, as belligerent, and as vicious as Republicans, and to hell with our allies in Europe who will suffer the consequences of any unilateral move we make.

Wouldn't he be fun to punch him in the nose? And then say to him "What are you gonna do? Try to be as muscular, aggressive, and mean as you believe I am?"

And then you could punch him again...... and again..... and again.

Quote from:
lostincalifornia

16. Economic sanctions are the only reasonable option, and an argument could be made that it will force negotiations sooner than later, and end the crisis

This should only be done with the Europeans, and is not the muscular, stupid, and aggressiveness you suggest. Going in militarily is muscular, stupid, and aggressive. Sanctions can bring all parties to the negotiating table sooner.

Of course this is mostly up to the Europeans, we can only try to facilitate it.

It could possibly prevent casualties by compelling the parties to negotiations

Yeah, well an argument could be made that you show signs of intelligence, but sane people will never believe it.

Quote from:
Pretzel_Warrior

13. Same yellow journalism. Different owners.

Must not point out that Dear Leader is an incompetent idiot.

Quote from:
Douglas Carpenter

15. and what EXACTLY are they proposing should be done?

Other than the G-8 suggestion, they're not. They're just pointing out that your Dear Leader is an incompetent idiot.

How many millions of people depend on the defense industry for their jobs?

Or would it be better if they were all dependent on unemployment,  welfare and food stamps?

I don't think the dumps**ts have a clue.

Not to mention pensioners and retirees with investments in "MIC" like Raytheyon, Boeing, N-G, etc etc.

DUmbasses think spending billions for handouts grows the economy but meeting a Constitutional mandate via actual businesses is a bad thing.

It's certainly worked when it was tried before.  That's pretty much exactly why there's an Ethnic Russian majority in the Crimea now, Stalin killed a huge part of the original population and then replaced them with Russian colonists.

Everything that King Barky the Incompetent touches turns to shit. Hint to LUrking DUmbasses it's not because he is smart. Obama is the least qualified man to ever hold the office of president. Sadly the USA and the rest of the world is going to pay a steep price for a long time.

A few threads like this, so this is just an example.

It's like the 8 years of Bush never happened when it comes to the left constantly attacking him.

Yeah libs, we get it. Republican in office - open season. Dem in office - no critism allowed.

But you see, the world just doesn't work that way. Dear Leader is an incompetent idiot, and it's on display for the whole world to see. Blaming anyone other than him is fruitless.

Obama has surrounded himself with the same incompetent liberal elitists.  They've sat around in their ivy colleges for years, theorizing about a utopian world.

They remind me of the R&D department that comes up with expensive projects that will never get off the drawing board, all the while bankrupting the company in the process.

Except that most companies with an R&D Department like that also have an Accounting and Auditing department that knows better than to authorize much more than the purchase of chalk by clowns like that. Unfortunately, where my poor beknighted country is concerned, the folks theoretically in control of her pursestrings  aren't similarly equipped with common sense. Hence the predicament we're in.

This is why liberals are dangerous. They never recognized how the real world works until it hits them right between the eyes. And even then they fail to take responsibility for being dumb enough not have recognized what reasonable and logical people recognized would happen eons before it did happen.
