Fair Warning: I WILL challenge this kind of bigotry.
It's pervasive, not just on DU but everywhere.
It's damaging, not just to those stigmatized, but to the success of the society that stigmatizes us.
It's insidious, I even catch myself doing it.
It's amorphous and easily disclaimed, which doesn't make it any less real.
I have a chronic brain disease. I am "mentally ill."
I am not a criminal, I am not crippled (other than occasional, private, temporary incapacity that causes me way more pain than it does anyone else.) I am not thoughtless, I am not dangerous.
I am not a Republican, a Libertarian, a Wingnut, a <anyone else whose beliefs offend you so much that you can't think of anything worse to attribute them to than the action of a chronic brain disorder.>
Chronic brain disorders affect nearly one in three people, at some time in their lives, at some degree of acuity. Some of us experience one temporarily, some of us live with one (or more) for life.
........blah, blah, blah.......
So, fair warning: From now on, when I stumble onto an OP or a subthread that equates "mental illness" with evil, stupidity, etc., either apparently with intent, or thoughtlessly, I WILL challenge that equation. I will do so politely.
But I will do so.

Not exactly the strongest reason in the world to take anything you post as unquestionably sound, you know...

The last paragraph and sentence had that extra-douchy, Will Pitt-esque tone to it.
DUmmie, do you think being one lunatic at that fever swamp makes you special?
-
Does this one know about the mental health support group at DU where h/sh/it can be among similarly afflicted DUmmies.
Brings to mind the question: Why don't all the DUmmies post there?
-
I have a chronic brain disease. I am "mentally ill."
That should be the motto of Democrat Underground. It perfectly describes all the non-moles who post there.

Dear tigger:
Hurry up and die. We don't need people like you sponging off of what is left of the productive class.

Whoa there, I believe that's a challengeable offense, according to the tigger primitive.
Watcha gonna do about it, tigger?

That nutcase needs to see loconutz's shrink..
Maybe this is Doug Bulna's sockpuppet.

Ummm.... I think the proper term is Tigro.

Roughly 30% of the American population is liberal.... correlation?
these people would be pitied if their crazy beliefs didn't mess up the lives of the 70% of the population.
We are... the 70%....!

DUmmies are mentally deranged. :mental:

Mere coincidence? I think not!
O-)

"Liberalism IS a mental disordertm."

Not necessarily. I have bipolar disorder, I just don't make a big deal about it. I take my meds and live my life. Everybody has challenges, mine aren't more important than anyone else.

You would be considered a happy little dot, an outlier in the grand scheme of things. What makes you special is that you refuse to use it as a crutch and haven't made an entire political belief system surrounding your bipolar disorder.
You are indeed a unique snowflake

I think all of us have or know someone with challenges. We deal with them and they don't define who we are.
My purpose for posting this thread was the OPs desire to find another issue to pounce on and get offended over. The past few weeks every thread had turned into a sexist catfight, after they ran the racist meme into the ground.
DUmmies are not happy unless they are unhappy about some preconceived injustice.

DUmbasses are "mental"..........................confirmed.

Fixed for truthfulness.

H5 for the fix.
The DUmmies are a miserable lot, and seem to enjoy wallowing in it.

That's why I don't bring it up most of the time because constantly looking for sympathy and even praise selfish. I laugh at their bullshit too because I think the majority of them are mental hypochondriacs. It's become a badge of honor and an excuse for their self inflicted piss poor lives. The "how many pills do you take" threads are some of my favorites because generally they list their mental illness. I find it ridiculous that their meds never help them and they still have the same angst and crazy they've always had. I get a kick out of the DUmmie (I'm so bad about remembering DUmmie names) who has PTSD from a tornado that she was hardly affected by.
I just wanted to point out that in that 30% there are other people besides DUmmies, including military members with PTSD (which I should have mentioned because supporting them is very important). Almost once a week on my Marine moms or military family groups we hear about a military person who needs help NOW or someone who committed suicide. I do feel mentioning it once in a while so that people can see most of us live perfectly normal lives is important. The freaking idiots over there stigmatize themselves and everyone else, which thoroughly pisses me off. I'm not a victim, I never will be.
