SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -

We are learning more about the man police say kidnapped and killed Hailey Owens.

45-year-old Craig Michael Wood has been working as a football coach at Pleasant View School.

People that in his central Springfield neighborhood and a former player say Wood was a quiet man who kept to himself.

Sickening as the perp is a football coach.

There were several witnesses to the abduction, as it was done in broad daylight just a few blocks from her school.  The witnesses were able to give the make and model and license plate number of the vehicle to the police.

Wood was apprehended within a couple of hours of the abduction, but Hailey was already dead.

Thanks BattleHymn for the link.  After reading, I wish I hadn't.  It made me feel physically sick.  I cannot comprehend what would drive a person to want to do such a thing to anyone, much less an innocent child.

I wish to God they could have found her in time to rescue the monster.  A monster that taught and coached children.   :argh:

I got the Amber Alert on my phone, but apparently it didn't go out as fast as they wanted it to.  By the time the alert went out, it looks like she may have already been dead.

I can't fault the Amber Alert system, though.  Springfield is small enough that you can drive all the way across town in around 20 minutes.  He didn't have far to travel.

I see I made a word salad in my post.  Sorry about that.

From what I read, witnesses to the abduction got the license plate and descriptions of vehicle and abductor and called the police.  Police tracked the plate and went to vehicle owner's home.  Parent's that owned the vehicle said son had the truck all day.  Police then went to monster's home and waited outside for the truck to show up.  She was dead by then.  Inside the home.  Four hours had passed. He had time to clean up the mess and had run to the store to get duct tape to tape up the trash bag he threw her in.

I'm no expert, but I doubt the Amber Alert would have helped if it had gone out quickly.  I read she was only 3 miles away.  It doesn't take long to drive 3 lousy miles.

Reading about crimes such as these makes me ashamed of our "justice" system.  True justice would be to turn this monster over to her family.  I know if it was my daughter, nothing would satisfy me other than having some alone time with him.
