Oh my.
I figured a primitive'd know more about such things than we do.

What's the difference between jail and prison? I don't get it.
JJChambers (68 posts) Sun Feb 9, 2014, 07:11 AM
1. Easy
Jail is for misdemeanants (crimes punishable by up to one year but not more) and those awaiting trial -- prison is for those convicted of a felony and sentenced to time behind bars exceeding one year.

12. It's happened where people get multiple consecutive 1 year terms so
I think I heard of an LA case that was 10 years in county jail.

2. Also
Jail is a city or county facility, prison is a state or federal system.

3. Roughly, jail = short term, prison = long term. Prison is "worse"
Everyone in prison has been convicted of a serious crime (not necessarily fairly, but the conviction is officially there). Some people in jail have been convicted of less serious crimes; others have not yet been convicted and are being held before trial / until they make bail / etc.
Prisons are run by the states or the Federal government and are generally dedicated installations. Jails are run by the city or county and may share facilities with other installations (eg, in some towns the jail is still a set of cells in the police department or sheriff's office).
Prison officers are generally dedicated corrections officers (that's all they do) who may or may not be deputized (and, increasingly, aren't). Jails are generally staffed by straight "line" law enforcement officers -- this is why privately-run prisons are becoming more common, but to my knowledge there isn't a single privately-run jail in the country. Prisons in general or more safe (things have changed a lot since the 1990s) but as a consequence the restrictions on the inmates are much much higher.

13. Prisons generally have more services...
They may have prison industries, educational programs and recreational facilities not available in county jails.

4. I know it's none of my business, sry in advance.
I hate to ask but I'm curious now. What happened?

6. someone in another thread mentioned jail and prison. Silly me, I always
thought they were the same thing.
It was in this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014722700

5. Remember that episode of "The Andy Griffith Show"
In which Barney explains the rules at "the Rock". 1) Obey all rules; 2) Don't write on the walls.
That's a jail; prisons have more rules.

7. I don't get why people start threads for simple questions instead of googling it.
They could have their answer in 5 seconds but instead they start a thread and wait for replies. Can someone explain to me why people do that?
Oh now.
The Iowa primitive sounds like some of the old grouches on freerepublic.

8. Maybe they thought others might enjoy the information but probably wouldn't have thought of it or looked it up. We're here to discuss...so why not discuss? People who are not interested don't have to look. I found this topic interesting.
<<<agrees with the anti-foliage primitive.

In jail you don't want to drop your soap. In prison you don't drop your soap.

Out here, because there's hardly any call for them, jails are pretty small.
They don't even have a cook on the staff; come eating time, the inmates order carry-out from any place of their choice, although since the taxpayers pay for it, I suspect there's a dollar limit, like five or ten or something.

The OP mentions another thread that sparked his reason for asking the question about jails vs prisons.
That other thread is about jails now charging inmates for their meals. Some funny responses.

Are they planning to commit a crime by any chance? Why would they discuss jails and prisons?
-
I can not speak from experience but both keep you locked up they tell me. They both aren't used enough these days. You're all the time hearing of people committing more crimes when they should have been locked up somewhere for crimes they've already committed.

Evergreen Emerald was the only one who got it right, and even then not 100%. The jail belonging to the municipality or county, vs the state or feds owning the prisons, is the only real hard-line distinction. There are people serving their time in local jails for mid-grade felonies, it all depends on the jurisdiction's rules, inmate loading in the facilities, and even plea deal terms.

Hell, a couple of the counties in my area house Federal inmates. They make something on the order of five figures per inmate.

True, BS, tons of local jails (The better-equipped ones, they have to be up Fed Bureau of Prisons standards) have cross-servicing agreements with DOJ's Marshal's Service and FBP to house Fed detainees and low-level offenders, which can include hard-core escapees and fugitives for very serious crimes, and also people the Feds are keeping on ice for protection or deal reasons away from other Fed prisoners.

One of the counties in the Adirondacks just built a new jail a 3-4 years ago, and the thing looks as if it's up to Federal standards--why else would a relatively poor county build it, unless they were getting/going to get $erious Federal money?

California has too many prisoners. Not enough jails or money to run them. Gov. Brown has been letting them out by the thousands, even the violent ones.

Governor Moonbeam has armed guards so why should he care.

Not to mention it is impossible to get a CCW in the PRoC. So it is double win for the fascist progressive democrat party.
