The Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City's annual BaconFest (http://baconfestkc.com/) will be held the afternoon of Saturday, August 23, 2014. The word on Bacon Street is that the event will be held at Union Station.
Tickets go on sale July 1. Advance tickets are $40; beginning August 1, ticket prices increase to $50 each.
I plan to attend. Who want to meet me in Kansas City for CC Bacon and Beer Party II: Electric Boogaloo?

Thanks to the admins for pinning this thread.
I posted this thread early to give anyone who is interested time to make plans. I plan to ride over to Kansas City Friday, and head for home Sunday morning.
-
I'll probably do it again.
-
Count me in.
-
I might give it another shot.

I'm gonna be offline more than usual for a while. I'm putting together a self-publish of my Dad's WW1 diary with some help of some folks over at Military History Online (http://www.militaryhistoryonline.com/).
Looking thru some of Dad's memorabilia, I came across this old post card of the Kansas City Union Station when it was first built.

http://www.everydaydutchoven.com/2014/03/bacon-wrapped-bbq-country-ribs.htmlBacon Wrapped BBQ Country Ribs
Adapted from this recipe I found on the Just A Pinch website, these bacon wrapped ribs are seriously good and just made for dutch oven cooking. Really, is there anything that doesn’t taste better when wrapped in bacon? Juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside, applewood smoked bacon paired with a hickory barbecue sauce made for a winning combination. In my 10 inch dutch oven, I started with 10 coals in a ring around the base of the oven with 26 briquettes on the lid. I left them alone and in spite of the wind and chilly temperatures, in one hour the steam was pouring from my oven and they were perfectly done. This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled, depending on the size of your oven. Just be sure to bake them in one layer and don’t cover them with too much sauce, you want the bacon exposed to the heat, otherwise it will become soggy.
(snip)
5 pork country ribs
10 slices uncooked bacon
1 1/2 cups barbecue sauce
toothpicks
Lightly oil or spray dutch oven.
Cover bottom of dutch oven with half of barbecue sauce.
Wrap each rib with two slices of bacon; secure bacon with toothpicks.
Place ribs in single layer in dutch oven.
Spoon remaining sauce evenly over ribs.
Ribs should not be swimming in sauce.
Bake at 350 degrees for one hour or until bacon is crisp on top and ribs are tender.
Recipe can easily be doubled and baked in larger dutch oven.

If I am off hitch, count me in. My schedule is not set yet, but when it is, I will see if this date lines up with an off hitch period.

That would be cool, because I wanna shake your hand and buy you a cup of coffee. Or something with a bit of kick to it.

I'm a tentative "yes".

Hell, Tots and Biersmythe couldn't even make it as far North as I am to come visit me while I was in the hospital or rehab. :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:
You actually think that they'll get as far North as KC? :fuelfire:

Well, there's that. Trying to organize a trip up between your moves, being sick, and Biersmythe and my work/school schedules has been quite the challenge.

I'm sure that, just for Big Dog, there will be an event that involves diving into a pile of bacon and then swimming in it.

I was at Oscar's Adirondack Smokehouse on Saturday, and my cousin convinced me to try their chocolate-covered bacon. Great stuff! He told me that they only make it one day per week, and it goes fast. I was able to taste why that happens.
-
It's easy enough to make, but it's really good.
Now you got me looking up recipes for chocolate ganache. Dammit.

I'm not sure if that is a well trained dog, a stuffed dog or cruel punishment.

I hope to make it this year, but I haven't yet bought my ticket. If I do, I'll probably take the bike, but I gotta put new tires on the thing. The scalloping is getting ugly. :p

BaconFest plans:
Moose and I will be in Kansas City Friday. We're going to stay out by Kansas City International Airport, and go to Cabela's in KCKS and the Outlaw Cigar Company (NW 64th Street, just west of I-29, KCMO) in the afternoon. Anyone in town on Friday is welcome to join us.
Saturday morning: If anyone wants to meet us for breakfast, call me. We'll be at the Parisi Coffee Shop inside Union Station (30 W Pershing Rd, KCMO) at 11:00. That will give us all plenty of time to talk before the BaconFest begins at 2:00 PM.
After the Fest, Moose and I are going to Fidel's Cigars in Westport, then to the Cheesecake Factory for his birthday. Again, all are welcome to join us.
Call me on my cell at any time- PM me if you don't have the number.

I'm home from the BaconFest weekend. Moose and I had a great time.
On Friday, we hit Cabela's, had cigars at the Outlaw Cigar Company, then dinner at Swagat's, my favorite Indian restaurant in Kansas City. Moose had Indian food for the first time.
Chicken tikka masala, lamb rogan josh, and garlic nan. Thumbs up!
We saw a sign on the lot next to our motel. Bacon is everywhere!
DumbAss Tanker met us before the Fest. It was great to talk to you, DAT.
The Festival itself was loud and crowded. We went outside and found some anti-bacon protestors.
Moose made a new friend.
PETArds were cute, but they smelled funny, as vegans do. Velvet wanted nothing to do with them.
Velvet and I found a spot out of the crush of bacon-loving humanity. Her eyes glowed with delight!
After a while, the noise and people took their toll on Velvet. We shook hands with DAT and went to the Country Club Plaza for dessert at Cheesecake Factory. When we got back to the motel, Velvet was exhausted.
The Festival was pretty good, and the weekend was great overall.
-
Looks like you had a good time.
Did you tell those PETA assholes it was for charity?

No, but we did ask each of them if they were drinking enough water. We were joyful warriors for our fellow carnivores everywhere.
I also told one of the smelly vegan guys, "Meat is murder. Tasty, tasty murder."
The smelly vegan gals had a dog tied to a tree. The dog didn't have water. They weren't treating that animal very ethically!

I hope, for the dog's sake, that you pointed that out--loudly.

I regret that my Baconfest ticket went to waste.
The money was well-spent, but the various things I had to do on Saturday took precedence over my ogling vegans and such.
A dog without water in that heat was criminal. The owner should have been rasterized (pun fully intended).

Did anyone besides DAT go from the cave?

Big Dog and his son and, of course, Velvet went. I had a ticket, but I couldn't make it.
-

The dog was at least in the shade, leashed to a tree (About the only tree around), and Big Dog was very civil with the fruitbars, reminding them to give it some water without provoking them.
