Obama to sign executive order raising minimum wage for federal contractors
President Obama, in the first of potentially many executive actions tied to his State of the Union address, will unilaterally increase the minimum wage for workers under new federal contracts to $10.10 an hour, from $7.25, in an effort to build momentum for a minimum wage hike for all Americans.
The executive order, which had been pushed by progressive Democratic lawmakers, applies to all contractors performing services for the federal government and would affect more than 2 million employees, according to an administration official.
The president will use Tuesday night's address to press Congress to pass a Democratic plan to increase the federal wage to $10.10 over three years, then indexing it to inflation, while also raising the minimum wage for tipped workers, the official said.

Are there any federal contractors currently making minimum wage? Is this really an issue that requires attention?

I wonder that myself.
I know many who are employed by governmental contractors in pretty low-level, menial, jobs--I do their income taxes for some of them--and I can't think of one paid less than $12 an hour.
And this is in "low-wage" Nebraska.....
I suspect the Big Zero knows it'll have no impact at all, but it looks good for him to propose it.

Probably not, but then this is never about the people who are paid minimum wage. This is a payoff to Dear Leader's buddies in the unions, who's contracts fix all wages at multiples of the minimum wage. Nothing more, nothing less.

To screw up a perfectly good Shake-Spear quote...."to strut and fury upon the stage signifying nothing."...eat your heart out Nadin.

It doesn't matter, this order only affects upcoming contracts. More window dressing trying to hide the rapidly crumbling foundation.

the emperor is trying to create an issue to trot out at the mid term elections to show the low/no information voters how the dems care about them and are pushing to raise the minumim wage while the mean spirited republicans are against it. The low/no info voters will totally miss the point that the raise to Fed contractors have no bearing on them. All they will see is uncle suger giving them more free stuff if they vote to keep the dems in power.

It's meaningless under the 'Prevailing Wage' laws (Davis-Bacon for construction and Service Contract Act for almost everything else), the Feds pretty much have to pay union scale plus overhead and profit on all the contract labor, and there isn't any union scale from 'Laborer' on up that is anywhere near minimum wage. I'm also pretty sure this won't apply to concessionaires (Who are not actual 'Contractors' in the contract law lingo), like Burger Kings on Army bases.

A kid in my son's college class has a min wage job. He is also a big, mouthy Obama fan. He was over joyed to hear min wage was increased to $10.10 an hour. He is planning what to do with his extra money. I explained what I knew of this to son and now son can't wait to bust his bubble tomorrow. :-)

Not only will this mean jack point shit to most folks, including government workers, even for those few who do get their pay increased, guess who has to pay for it?
