Well. My car won't start. I was forced to call in today. I tried.
FREEEEEEZING cold! Wind cuts right through you! I'm drinking hot tea right now to survive.
They've closed the schools here. The temperature for the next 36-48 hours is going to be in single digits.
I've lived here for 30 years. It's never been this cold.

Sorry about your car, but I'm glad to hear that your not going out in what can only be extremely dangerous conditions.
This morning the news was showing cars sliding all over the icy roads.
Six degrees. :bday:
Minus 12 here in Des Moines, wind chill of minus 40.That's where I am!
That's where I am!
<=== Is basking in a balmy 21° F, with no appreciable wind or wind chill. All I need is a(nother) piña collada. :-) :fuelfire:

My phone says it's -2 right now, so I figure it to be about -20, actually. The wind is blowing pretty good. I'm also hearing from minus 40 to minus 5p tomorrow. I gotta go to work in the AM, unfortunately... :(
Even going out to have a smoke is damn near unbearable right now.
My car started up after a couple seconds of cranking. It took longer to pry open the frozen door.
The guy in my department that works out of Stoughton, WI said it took him two hours to get his truck unfrozen enough to start. -50 wind chills and all the schools in the state are shut down.
That's one way to stop smoking . . . :whistling: O-)QUIT????? or you kidding?
QUIT?????
QUIT????? or you kidding?
1-Lay on back and blow smoke up the chimney.
2-Hang garden hose out window, place cigarette in garden hose, suck and blow smoke out hose.
3-Blow smoke in heater vent and blame on bad furnace.
4-Stick head under kitchen range hood with hood exhaust fan running.
5-just say the hell with it and light up in your easy chair.
Dang amateurs.
My county and city has been over run by the anti-smoking Nazis. You are not allowed to smoke in any public building or work place. If you smoke outside, you must be at least 20 feet from a doorway.....and no smoking on any government property/grounds.

-20 Saturday; yesterday it warmed up to just above freezing; today it hit 54 when I was driving kids to school (in thick fog and rain).
Tomorrow right back down to arctic chill. Oil companies are loving this weather - had to call for another delivery. I am going through it like water.
My wife found a leak from the master bath shower stall into the ceiling of the half-bath on the first floor, yesterday. I spent soem time ripping the ceiling in the half-bath apart, then called for reinforcements. There's a big hole in the ceiling now, the shower drain is the culprit, but it's not a big leak. My cousin (the retired police officer) has an in with a plumbing company in the area, and we'll be getting a few estimates on the repairs soon. We may have to spring for a new shower stall . . . !
In the meantime, the hole in the ceiling has caused a pretty big draft into that half-bath, so we closed the door.
My house has these wonderful space heaters built into the walls (two upstairs, three downstairs). I don't know which costs more to run, the heat exchanger in the attic or them, but they sure are comfortable.
I had to close off a couple of hallways/exits yesterday. It was a big improvement.
I can hear the wind howl outside. Its only -30 outside right now.
At least we warmed up to -4 at last glance.Oh, well that's shirt sleeve weather right there.
Oh, well that's shirt sleeve weather right there.
It will be -13 tomorrow morning in Des Moines, with a windchill of -40! -40?!!
This is something that is supposed to affect the north east, not here.
I won't get to stay home because its "too cold." I have to buck up and get to work!
I remember thinking when I volunteered to move here from Phoenix. I thought, "It will be an adventure."
Earth to Mannn: Cold is NOT an adventure! Frostbite is NOT a freaking adventure!
I'm gonna find me Al Gore and I'm so gonna kick his rich, 1% a$$!
I had to work today. It was about 0 outside not including wind chill
BUT.....
It was 68 degrees from my bed to my desk in my pajamas and once the coffee as brewed a scant few minutes later it heated up even more--work from home day :yahoo:

Does it matter at this point? All about staying warm at most any cost.
No bragging!!! :-)
It pays to be in our line of work Mr. Wiggums :-)
That's one way to stop smoking . . . :whistling: O-)
It's two degrees out there.
This sucks.
It's currently 24° F in the Salt Lake valley this morning...
:fuelfire: :-)
You, my friend, are a Complete Asshole.
:asshole:
Congratulations. :-)
You may be on to something...
:nelson:
I never thought I'd be so thrilled that the temperature is 13 degrees (real feel of 13 as well!). I felt like going outside without a coat on.
After that windchill, that's short weather for us northern state types. Break out the flip flops! :panic: :panic: :-)
When I was in college and the temps got to above freezing, a whole bunch of people would dress in shorts and wear flip flops on their feet (in place of the warmer clothes and winter boots that everyone else was wearing). Invariably, said shorts-wearers would wind up as new flu cases in the school's Health Center in 3 to 4 days.
It was a joke. I grew up in the south so it has to get above 60 for me to wear anything remotely looking like a sandal :-)
Although, as I'm sure you know, cold does not cause flu--a virus does...so the people that ended up in the health center were there because a virus; the most I can see cold doing is lowering the defenses to said virus while the body concentrates instead on conserving heat. I know plenty types up here who don't end up sick in shorts, but certainly I wouldn't wear them. I have adjusted a little since moving here but not to that extent and the longer the winter goes on, the less I tolerate it.
We're having a heat wave....14F earlier this morning and already up to 18F ....when it hits the sultry high of 36 today, I'm gonna get nekkid. :-):thatsright: Great! Now you've done it. The women folk are all incensed now. These gal start getting all het up, and drinking refreshing adult beverages....and then there is jes no controllin them!
Thank goodness. I was afraid I killed my own thread!Maybe just maimed ?
