Title: My Monday Comute: -40 windchill.
Post by: Mr Mannn on January 05, 2014, 08:54:31 PM
It will be -13 tomorrow morning in Des Moines, with a windchill of -40! -40?!!
This is something that is supposed to affect the north east, not here.

I won't get to stay home because its "too cold." I have to buck up and get to work!
I remember thinking when I volunteered to move here from Phoenix. I thought, "It will be an adventure."
Earth to Mannn: Cold is NOT an adventure! Frostbite is NOT a freaking adventure!

I'm gonna find me Al Gore and I'm so gonna kick his rich, 1% a$$!

-40 is too cold to breathe!

It's going to -16F here, which is better than what was predicted and I'm not expecting it to be windy.  I'm a happy woman.

I'm trying to figure out, though, how to cover my mouth but not have my glasses fog up or, worse, frost over.

We're going to have the same sort of temps with about 8 inches of snow on the ground. My workplace is  open tomorrow, but I imagine a lot of people will be late or not show up.

I did my three days this weekend and had to shovel snow to leave work tonight.

I was snowed in at work.

With these sorts of temperatures, people, stay home,

It's currently, circa 10 p.m. in the Sandhills, -9 and the wind-chill's -39.

It could drop to -50, wind-chill, during the night.

Screw work, people.  This is not weather that demands one should take significant risks.

They've closed the schools here.  The temperature for the next 36-48 hours is going to be in single digits.

I've lived here for 30 years.  It's never been this cold.

You were born and raised in Arizona, Mr Mannn.

I don't believe you have any realistic idea of what a -40 wind-chill is.

And I don't want it to be the last thing you learn in life.

Stay home.  Screw work.

My phone says it's -2 right now, so I figure it to be about -20, actually. The wind is blowing pretty good. I'm also hearing from minus 40 to minus 5p tomorrow. I gotta go to work in the AM, unfortunately... :(

Even going out to have a smoke is damn near unbearable right now.

Low for Sunday night was 42....wasn't bad a 7 am when I went out this morning....no wind then but it's blowing now and the temperature is dropping. They predict 7 degrees by Tuesday morning and a high in the mid 20's. I'm not sure but I believe that's about the coldest we have had since around 1990 when it hit zero Christmas eve.

Button up folks, stay warm and keep that CO2 coming.

Sorry about your car, but I'm glad to hear that your not going out in what can only be extremely dangerous conditions.

This morning the news was showing cars sliding all over the icy  roads.

It was -9 with a 5 mph wind (about -22 wind chill) when I left for work this morning a little before 6 AM.

This kind of cold is hell on car batteries. Even in the garage, mine complained -- but she started.

About 9 AM while at work, I went out to the parking lot to start the car. Started fine, but I need to do this a couple times today.

My car started up after a couple seconds of cranking.  It took longer to pry open the frozen door.

The guy in my department that works out of Stoughton, WI said it took him two hours to get his truck unfrozen enough to start.  -50 wind chills and all the schools in the state are shut down.

1-Lay on back and blow smoke up the chimney.

2-Hang garden hose out window, place cigarette in garden hose, suck and blow smoke out hose.

3-Blow smoke in heater vent and blame on bad furnace.

4-Stick head under kitchen range hood with hood exhaust fan running.

5-just say the hell with it and light up in your easy chair.

My shift foreman was kind enough to leave early yesterday so I just smoked in the shop.  It's against Illinois law and against company policy, but I was the only one there.

My county and city has been over run by the anti-smoking Nazis. You are not allowed to smoke in any public building or work place. If you smoke outside, you must be at least 20 feet from a doorway.....and no smoking on any government property/grounds.

-20 Saturday; yesterday it warmed up to just above freezing; today it hit 54 when I was driving kids to school (in thick fog and rain).

Tomorrow right back down to arctic chill.    Oil companies are loving this weather - had to call for another delivery.  I am going through it like water.

Not sure of the exact law, but here if you are at a medical facility, there is no smoking allowed on the property.

Illinois is no smoking in any business and requires 15 feet from any doorway.  However, I'm sure that is ignored quite often.  It seems their main targets with the law was bars and restaurants.

One bar I know put a portable building near their back door for smokers.  It had one light and a small electric heater.  They were told that they had to take the door off and remove the windows to meat the laws requirements.

Two hour school delay this morning for my kiddos due to the heavy fog and residual ice. I'm expecting delays again tomorrow due to the arctic blast coming in later today/tonight, which will pretty much refreeze all the snow/rain/slop puddles that are everywhere.

And we had our second oil delivery this morning. I still haven't gotten acclimated to this New England weather.  :(

My house has these wonderful space heaters built into the walls (two upstairs, three downstairs).  I don't know which costs more to run, the heat exchanger in the attic or them, but they sure are comfortable.

I had to close off a couple of hallways/exits yesterday.  It was a big improvement.

My wife found a leak from the master bath shower stall into the ceiling of the half-bath on the first floor, yesterday.  I spent soem time ripping the ceiling in the half-bath apart, then called for reinforcements.  There's a big hole in the ceiling now, the shower drain is the culprit, but it's not a big leak.  My cousin (the retired police officer) has an in with a plumbing company in the area, and we'll be getting a few estimates on the repairs soon.  We may have to spring for a new shower stall . . . !

In the meantime, the hole in the ceiling has caused a pretty big draft into that half-bath, so we closed the door.

God was talking to you friend.

My car is in the garage but I've still went out and started it and set it out to heat up a couple of times. My mothers car is outside but thankfully the wind is on the back of the house and blocking it. Still, it started slow so I have been starting hers a couple times today so hopefully once tomorrow and the coldest of it is over, life can get back to normal.

My guy put a clamped utility light on his engine last night.

I don't know what you do Mr. Mannn, but I really wish more businesses would allow at least situational work at home for just these times. I tell you my morale is through the roof when I wake up on a day like today and know I can still put in my time AND stay in the comfort of my warm home with my family. Serves both masters and a great option. Wish more folks who can were allowed that option. My ex is allowed situational and they STILL dragged him in and there is ZERO reason he can't do his job from home with what he does. But since we didn't get much snow they called them in, yet they have to take their laptop home every night as a contingency for his company, yet he's not afforded the same contingency when his situation better warrants working from home. Just bullshit imo.

Ok rant done--stay warm.

No. Still didn't stop me. Although, when nobody's home, I do smoke inside.

Work was unbearable. Sent home early because it was totally dead. That's the good thing. The bad thing was going outside for garbage, and recycling. The Travel Store employees were even told not to go outside, and change garbages.

Never been bit by a rattler, but I imagine the wind today was similar. Glad I'm not working second. Temps actually dropping off at night is scary to think about from what it is now (-11)

-13

-32 with the wind figured in.

Directv has been out for 3 days, the dish is covered in snow, I'd go out and clear it off but I can't reach it.

Water has been out for 2 days but I don't think it's my pipes, I left the tap cracked open just a bit last night with a water bottle strategically situated and this morning it was full.

I was really grateful for that since the furnace runs so much the air gets really dry and my mouth is practically welded shut by morning, being the mouth breather I am and all.

And I have to give a special shout out to the cat, who, without regard to her own safety buries herself in my armpit every chance she gets.

Got home from work late yesterday afternoon about 4 (temp -3 with a wind chill of -18) and as the snow had drifted over a chunk of the driveway making it tough to get out, I grabbed the snowblower and went to it. Zero effect with the machine, so I got the shovel out.

An hour later I was done, but I was an f'n popsicle.

Even the manual labor didn't keep me warm, except for my hands. Legs, especially, were redder than debk's hair.  :-)

After that windchill, that's short weather for us northern state types. Break out the flip flops! :panic: :panic: :-)

When I was in college and the temps got to above freezing, a whole bunch of people would dress in shorts and wear flip flops on their feet (in place of the warmer clothes and winter boots that everyone else was wearing).  Invariably, said shorts-wearers would wind up as new flu cases in the school's Health Center in 3 to 4 days.

It was a joke. I grew up in the south so it has to get above 60 for me to wear anything remotely looking like a sandal  :-)

Although, as I'm sure you know, cold does not cause flu--a virus does...so the people that ended up in the health center were there because a virus; the most I can see cold doing is lowering the defenses to said virus while the body  concentrates instead on conserving heat. I know plenty types up here who don't end up sick in shorts, but certainly I wouldn't wear them. I have adjusted a little since moving here but not to that extent and the longer the winter goes on, the less I tolerate it.

Yup.  Also, said people usually had been drinking copious amounts of alcohol, and were in close contact with people with the damned bug to start with.

Damn that glow bull warming.

It's a scorching 28° F this morning, with precipitation coming down.  Do you know how repressively humid that makes things around here?

Thirty degrees this morning, with wind-chill, twenty-one.

Grey skies, heavy fog, clouds about ready to drop some stuff.

Compared with this time last week, this is heaven; the world's habitable.

I must confess to missing the worst of it.

Last Sunday we got the worst day of our last cold spell.  Well below zero and the wind was howling.  I care for quite a few ranch and polo horses, knew it was going to be a nasty day Sunday, and had prepared, the day before, a real efficient way to get them all fed in the shortest time possible.

Got a call Saturday night.  It was one of the owners of some of the horses.  They were in town and offered to feed the next day.  I took them up on it.  Felt bad, though, because they've been in TX, were only here a couple days, and I knew they were even less used to what was coming than I was.

I assuaged my feelings of guilt with a nice breakfast of sausage, eggs, and hashbrowns while they must have been feeding.   :-)

Tomorrow is going to be 40 above.  I have bales of hay to move and it's going to be T-shirt weather, for sure!
