Five Foods That Are Killing the Planet
Spoiler alert: Stop reading now if you can't live without Quarter Pounders, packaged pastries, or expensive sushi.
(Actually - read on, and change your habits. It's not that hard.)
What are the five foods? Read the article for a full explanation, but here you go:
1) Bluefin Tuna
2) Conventional (non shade grown, non organic) coffee
3) Cheap burgers
4) Genetically modified corn
5) Palm oil

We'll let Pulitzer Prize–winning food critic Jonathan Gold get on his soapbox for this one: "People need to stop eating BLUEFIN TUNA. Period. It'll be difficult because bluefin is uncommonly delicious and tends to be served at high-end sushi bars, where the fashion is to say 'omakase' and submit to the chef's will. But the numbers of these magnificent fish are dropping fast. If we don't stop eating them now, we'll stop in a few years anyway because there won't be any more." Carl Safina, who founded the Blue Ocean Institute, adds, "Because they're long-lived, bluefin populations don't stand up well to heavy fishing pressure—that's why they're so depleted. It's just too sad to eat them. Plus, big fish are high in mercury." To rein in your share of the overfishing disaster currently unfolding—bluefin stock is down by more than 96 percent from unfished levels—order a vegetarian roll instead.

Many thanks to DUmmy Flaxbee for the heads up.
I normally consume considerable quantities of the first four, but have no idea what "palm oil" is.
I will check it out and be sure palm oil becomes a staple around here.
Thanks again, DUmmy!

I can only think of one thing "Palm" oil is good for... And it ain't eating. Well unless your into that freaky shit.

Ok, I stopped.

We can't 'kill' the planet. It'll be around long after we're gone...

Heh. Makes you almost wish that people hadn't quit using Crisco.
It's shortening, y'know.
-
Cheetos didn't make the list?
-
I often say 'omakase' when visiting Mac D's or Whataburger.
-
I believe palm oil is used in a lot of highly-processed processed food, like milk chocolate.
Hey DUmmies, why don't you geniuses come up with yummy alternatives that will taste so much better than the real thing that people leave the bluefin alone...like Tofuna!
:rotf:

Why do DUmmies hate poor people? GMO crops are being developed to grow in places that normally can't grow food crops. GMO grains and vegetables are being created that are higher in vitamins and other necessary minerals and stuff.
GMO crops are helping to feed and nourish poor people .

GMO is just a more sophisticated version of what humans have been doing since they started fiddling with agriculture. The best simple example I've heard is that back when man first started to farm corn the ears were about 1/2" long.

It's not poor people it is people in general. I'm no psychiatrist but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night, and I think that is due to them fundamentally hating themselves. Their self hate is what powers all the other hate they have and they are pretty much all hate.
To DAT, Tofuna, LMFAO

That's the way I look at it. Scientists are doing in the lab in months and years what Luther Burbank took decades to do in the fields and gardens.

I think I will just continue to decide for myself what I eat. It's gotten me this far. :whatever:

We've had GMO food since mankind stopped being hunter/gatherers and started farming.
'Cept we called it "selective breeding" and "cross pollination".
In fact, "evolution=GMO" and vise versa.

Same here. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :lmao:

That and flour is only used on fat people.

Yes, because we all know that coffee grown in the Sun sucks up our limited supply of sunlight. Leave it to DU and the sierraklub to keep us from squandering our last rays of hope ration.

Palm oil is what makes movie popcorn well....movie popcorn. Why do the primitives hate big hollywood?

I have some reservations about putting squirrel or fish genes into plants, which is what some of the more extreme examples of GM have included. It just seems like something that can't possibly end well in the long run. On the other hand, I don't see that it makes the product inedible or dangerous itself.

Correction: palm oil is what USED to make movie popcorn. Some control freaks got the leftists to ban the use of palm oil for popcorn.

I just read where one female blue fin can produce 30 million eggs during her life. So why aren't we helping by farming these endangered sushi stars?

Another (lib) saturday night and I ain't got no palm oil...

Funny, for a fish population that's "so depleted", why is it that a federal agency - the EPA - that hasn't been shy about putting a species on the Endangered Species List whenever it could be used to advance the cause of turning America into a Luddite society before, has balked at listing this species (http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2011/20110527_bluefintuna.html)? Even the vaunted UN and CITES has rejected every proposal to list the species as endangered, with the accused "worst offenders" (European nations) full-out abstaining from the vote entirely. You would think that if the species were as depleted as the Sierra Club (source of the "unbiased data" you're citing) claims it is, the most leftist governing bodies in existence - the Obama Regime and the UN - would have no compunction about forcing sushi eaters to make sacrifices, "for the children"...
-
I prefer to have my dolphin be tuna free.
-
With a year in the south pacific fishing bigeye, yellowfin and skipjack, I can attest we never once caught dolphins(bottle nosed). While I was there we caught approximately 10,000 tons between the 3 species.

It's not the EPA that does that, it's the Fish & Wildlife Service for most domestic noncommercial species, and National Marine Fisheries Service for commercially-fished ocean fish species.
However, you may remember why American Samoa was exempted from the large minimum wage hike when San Fran Nan was Speaker... That same connection would probably have a lot to do with any action on bluefin or any other tuna species, even if she's just the Minority Leader rather than Speaker now.
