Title: So I'm going to Disney World in January.
Post by: Mr Mannn on December 14, 2013, 12:39:45 PM
Its not my fault. Some one posted a Disney vacation thread in this very forum and lit a fuse under me.
I had to do it too.

I went to Dis Boards http://www.wdwinfo.com/chat.htm  because I saw that forum in the previous thread.
Its a real help to planning things...but its members are Disney nuts who all seem to have annual passes.
Right now on Dec 14th, it is 80 degrees. 68 was the low.

I'm about 5 years too early. Avatar Land is being built right now in Disney's Animal Kingdom park.
and Star Wars Land is going to open around that time in Disney Hollywood Studios park.

anyways I'm staying in a "budget" Disney Hotel, for $118 bucks a night. I could have gotten another hotel in Orlando for like $60 a night, but car rental and $15 bucks a day parking at the parks evens it all out. With Disney, transportation is free. There are fancier hotels...but why? I'm only gonna be sleeping there.
--So bottom line: Disney gets 100% of my vacation dollar: food, lodging, and fun.

Oh yes the hotel. Its theme is the last few cartoon blockbusters from Disney. I'm not in the Cars wing...no I reserved late, so I got the girly Little Mermaid room. Still, there is a 40 food statue of the Little Mermaid. I wanted a boobs level room (the "shells suite." I can't afford that), but I'm in the head. I have to open her eyes if I want to look out. I wonder if I can dump garbage out her nose...

The package just for me was $1200. Not bad. I'm going solo so it should be a real easy pace. I hate to say, I have bigger plans to eat very well over there, I got the Disney dining plan and I get a free restaurant dinner and a quick service meal every day. And one snack a day is free too.
--I will eat like a king!

There is some weird service where you can get your picture taken with an animated character, like a teeny tiny Tinkerbell perched in your hand. If I can get them to let pose like I'm about to swat her with a rolled up newspaper, I'll post it here.

Brr.

Yeah, I know it's Florida.

All's I can say is I've been to DW in December, March, and July.

July was best.  December was worst.

YMMV.

You need to, at the very least, look for a grumpy dwarf t shirt.

You know, arms all folded gangsta style, glaring at you out of the corner of his little dwarf eyes.

I got one the last time I was at DW, I liked it so much that I rendered it to flinders by just wearing it.

When I was in the south Pacific, every day was 85 degrees, humid, sunny and 12 hours long right along the equator.
All I was missing was the Disney World to complete the package.

I'll try with the pictures. No camera at the moment.

As for eating, I only eat freeze dried Hamburger on a regular basis. But yes, it will be nice to eat really well.
There is a place called the Whispering Canyon Cafe. It serves endless milkshakes. I'm gonna try to have lunch there. I'll order a kids meal, eat mac & cheese, and drown myself in milkshakes.
Its at one of the most beautiful Disney Hotels: The Wilderness Lodge. You have got to see the pictures to believe it.

Disney has a lot of hotels that are far to expensive to be believed, the Wilderness Lodge is one of them. Seriously, you're only gonna sleep there. Why pay $200 or $300 a night? I'll stick with my girly mermaid room, thank you.

I promise I will find a way to get some pics. But this is a solo trip, so I most likely will not be in them.

But here is a treat, The Wilderness Lodge is a mere boat ride away from the Magic Kingdom park.

The hotel is on the pricey side, $284 a night in the off season. Still it sports some great restaurants.

I did find some pictures of the mermaid room. I was NOT kidding when I said girly.
Take a gander...

this next one was a shock to me...it reveals a really cheap part of my room. Not gonna bother me, but if more that one person is going to use the room, they're gonna be sorry!

Look at the cheap plastic curtain. Its not hiding a window, its replacing the doorway to the bathroom. I'm paying $118 bucks a day for a cheap plastic curtain?!!

One of the gals at DisBoards said she was going to Honeymoon in this room, cause she loves the mermaid movie. I can just see her pretending not to hear the husband in the bathroom after dinner at the Mexico Pavilion in Epcott. Rude introduction to marriage 101.
--Reversed, the hubby will be silently cheering, "Thats my girl!" Cause guys are just crude like that.

That does look somewhat shabby.

Are those solid headboards fixed to the bed frame or are they just hung on the wall like pictures?

Forgot the last one. Don't tell Pretzel Warrior but there is a life size Ariel on the shower curtain.

I don't know. they could be great big stickers on the wall.

But I've learned my lesson. Next time I'll be spending my $100 bucks a night in Orlando and sleep somewhere decent.

You're probably not going to find much better for $100 a night.  For some reason, the last half-dozen hotels I've stayed in were all La Quinta and they're nothing special.

You have GOT to be kidding me about them using a plastic curtain for a bathroom door.  They should be ashamed of themselves, calling themselves a hotel and all.  Unacceptable!

If you have a chance to change hotels -- DO IT NOW!!!

There are 3 hotels that are really run down and Art of Animation is one of them.  It is like a really large, really badly run Motel 6.  The food is expensive and awful (they will sell you a reusable cup for like $50 per cup or else you can pay $5 for a coke).

Don't let the cute characters throw you.  That is ALL they are is concrete formations.  And if you are unlucky, the walk to the bus stop will be long.

Unless you get one of the premier Disney hotels, look into non-Disney unless getting in 1 hour early to different parks (the schedule rotates) is important (really only worth it for Wild Animal Park since the animals all go to sleep by 9:00AM and won't move for the rest of the day).

Just some words of great caution...

I hate that ride. I have no idea why it hasn't been torn down. No need to duck. Its the only ride you will find with no lines on a busy day. The only reason I would go would be to make out with a hot date, but I'm 55 and the super models are a bit scarce these days.

anyhow I'm making nefarious plans to eat well, and spontaneously where ever I find myself in Disney. My dining plan accepts reservations 6 months in advance...I don't want to be a slave to a reservation.
--so i've given up on the fancy best know places and i'm going out of my way to hit the lesser known restaurants. I just might have a tablet by then and I'll post reviews of all the eateries I hit.

Now whats with asking for ketchup at the Whispering Canyon Cafe? Do they like throw fits? Does the chef come out and curse you in french? Do the waiters weep?

Libs rely on strong feelings, rather than fact. It's a big part of what makes a lib a lib.
This would of course apply to any libs visiting Disney attractions.
But as you indicated they're not free so not many libs go there.

Visiting Disney attractions is a basic human right.
And by "visiting" I mean free, naturally.

I'm just trying to step up my game.

The Orlando Small World sucks donkey balls compared to ours in Anaheim.  It looks like something from a midway at a carnival rather than a Disney attraction. Same for their Pirates of the Caribbean in Orlando.

When my wife and I went to Disney World a few years back, we ended up spending most of our time at Epcot.  The GM Test Track (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Test_Track) is a blast and is the same technology that  our Radiator Springs Racers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiator_Springs_Racers) attraction is based upon.

If you like space technology, I recommend a day trip to the Kennedy Space Center as a nice break from the monotony of the parks.  We were fortunate enough to be there when a Shuttle launched and got a tour bus that picked us up in Orlando and drove us to the KSC and got us into a VIP area to view the launch.  That was the highlight of the trip for me.  We went back 2 days later and took the KSC Up-Close Cape Canaveral: Then And Now Tour (http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/tours/ksc-up-close-then-and-now-tour.aspx) which took us to several of the launch pads from Project Mercury and Gemini as well as pad 34 where the Apollo 1 fire occurred.

Either way,  have a good time and let your inner child rule the day

OK, got me a toy for the trip, a tablet. Its got wifi internet, reading apps like Kindle in it, and it can take pictures and video. Its a 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab3. There is a Disney app where I can manage my Fast Pass, and dinner reservations, so it's going into the parks with me. I got a case for it, earphones and I'm going to wear a safari vest with huge pockets to keep it in (no backpacks or fanny packs for me!).

I'll bounce a few test photos off you guys before I go.

Just so ya know, I've never ever owned a cell phone. So this is all new to me. Y'all might be old pros at this, but I'm a caveman with all this new fangled stuff. Just opened the box, we'll see what happens. Probably needs charging up first.

I'll be damned if I ain't the last great holdout on cell phones. I hate the damned things, but they are handy for phone calls. You guys aren't the only holdouts with the cellphones.  I've got a dumb one that's very, very old, and very very cheap to maintain minutes.  Some people have $150 monthly bills or more, mine is $20/month.  I don't sit around texting stupid shit to people, though.

Last two times I visited DW (FL), 1996 and 2006, there were lines to get into Small World.  Actually stood in one in '06 because I was with others who wanted to go.

I don't suppose they'll remove it as long as people will line up for it.  Or until they have something better to put in the slot.  As far as I know, 20,000 Leagues was the only popular ride to be removed and left barren for some time, and that was for (alleged) maintenance issues.  It had just been removed in '96, and was empty except for a "cast mamber" portraying the little mermaid sitting on (in) a "rock" in a "grotto" in '06.

20,000 leagues was one of my favorite rides at Disney. I remember looking at that Jules Verne novel when I was in grade school along with the Hardy Boys and others.

Title: Re: So I'm going to Disney World in January.

The alarm is set. The cab is going to be here an hour later. The bags are backed. The tablet in my coat pocket.
I'm ready. I would appreciate prayers for a safe trip, and that I don't attract TSA attention.

I got back late last night. I'm still dead tired. Had fun. No pictures though. The **** tablet stopped working.
I did have fun. My feet are killing me. I ate well, but Disney restaurants are not as awesome as I was led to believe.  The Kona Kafe in the Polynesian Resort is nothing more than a glorified Deney's.
There was one place at Downtown Disney I ate at, that did something weird to me-something you probably won't want to know. I'll only tell you if you want to know.

The weather was hot/humid the first two days, and the last two days it was cold and wet. One day was my Hollywood Studios/return to Epcot day. It was 44 degrees and had a serious windchill. I made a point to ride Universe of Energy with Ellen Degenerus...its the longest sit down ride at Disney, 45 minutes of warmth and off your feet comfort. No seat belts of coaster thrills...just a silly dinosaur ride.

Oh, and I did attract TSA interest. Both times that patted down my right leg. Don't know what triggered it. But it was the same leg both times.

So. I've been to all four parks. Ask me anything.

The same leg? Hm, is that the way you hang?

If you went to Whispering Canyon ... did you ask for ketchup?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Well, I didn't want to brag.

I ended up canceling my reservation. My feet were KILLING me that day. I did find out what would happen on DisBoards: The waiters scream, "Ketchup!" and a 100 bottles are delivered to your table. I was so worn out, that I was in no mood for shenanigans. Room service brought Pizza and wings instead.

Not to mention all the ketchup packets they throw on the table, if I remember correctly.  It is a noisy atmosphere in there ... imagine that.  LOL

Lions awake when you went to Animal Kingdom?  b/c they usually go to sleep about 8:45 AM...

Also, did you try the bio tour in Epcot?  The boat sucks but the walking tour is great.

I also assume you did Soarin?  Last time I went I actually cried b/c I was homesick for L.A...

I have never ever seen the lions awake. I think they are stuffed and just rearranged every day/Disney magic.

No, I took the boat only. The quick service Sunshine Seasons Food Court is wonderful! I enjoyed it more than the Beirgarten restaurant at the Germany pavilion. Sunshine has "Slow Roasted Pork Chop with Cheddar Mashed Potatoes." The chop like melted in my mouth! It was GREAT! Where else are you gonna get a pork chop in a fast service place?

I also assume you did Soarin?  Last time I went I actually cried b/c I was homesick for L.A...
Yes, I did Soarin. I had a fast pass for it and still stood in line for 40 minutes.
