Perfect: Big Banks Don't Pay A Third Of Tellers Enough To Live On: Study - HuffPo

Big Banks Don't Pay A Third Of Tellers Enough To Live On: Study

<snip>

A staggering number of bank tellers in New York City use public assistance to get by, a report released Wednesday found

Thirty-nine percent of NYC-based bank tellers and their families rely on at least one government assistance program, like Medicaid, the Earned Income Tax Credit or food stamps, which costs the city a total of $112 million per year, according to the study from the New Day New York Coalition, a group of progressive organizations. Researchers arrived at their findings through government data, as well as interviews with 5,000 bank workers in the New York area, who answered questions about stress, working conditions, pay practices and how the industry has changed since 2008.

Have they discovered that the 'change' they 'hoped' for isn't the rose garden they had envisioned?

False conclusion.

"Bank tellers receive taxpayer subsidized benefits" =/= "Bank tellers don't get paid enough to live on".

It would be equally valid to conclude "Bank tellers are selfish assholes with their greedy fingers in taxpayers' pockets".

Suck it, lurking DUmmies.

Can a bank teller earn enough to live on in another state besides NY?

Maybe it isn't the job or the income, but something else....... :whatever:

However, it should be kept in mind that these are the same people demanding everyone be deemed eligible for as many government assistance programs as possible.

So, which is it lurkers? Do you want us all on food/medical/housing/education/pension assistance or do you want us to be self-sufficient?

That rose garden is full of thorns too.

Oh, FFS.  Bank tellers have traditionally been paid low wages.  It was my first part-time job in high school, and it helped me earn spending money in college.  Even when I sporadically worked full time in between semesters, I wasn't earning enough to live on independently - had my parents not been subsidising me, I'd have had to get a roommate, and children would have been out of the question.  There's a reason why bank tellers are almost always women - even when you DUmmies were little kids and tagged along with your parents to the bank, how often did you find a man behind the counter?  Right - because it was a job suited to wives who were supplementing the family income.  Women who wanted a career in banking moved their asses up the ladder.

DUmmies:  not every job has to pay enough to support an entire family..... kids and part-time working spouses are allowed to jump in and out of the job market, you know.  If the DUmmies had their way, we'd all have to pay the 12-year old neighbor kid $20.00 an hour to babysit.

Unless it was their kids and their neighbor.  The babysitter would be lucky to get $2.00 an hour and a bowl of baked kale for snacks.

I know around here starting pay for bank tellers is $15.00 an hour.  Which is decent IMO.  Definitely good if a spouse is also making about the same or more.

Speaking of New York though.  I worked for UBS financial here in Nashville at my first IT job on the helpdesk.  They decided to have call-center in the middle of the country because this was right after 9/11.  From what I understand they paid the people in Jersey the exact same as they paid us.  I am not sure how they got by honestly because I wasn't making that much and the cost of living difference is night and day.

I think it is the expense of living in a very popular city that draws the best and brightest from all over the world. Real estate and rentals ain't cheap in NYC.

Oh I know.  In some states you can get a big beautiful home for what it costs for a closet in NYC.

That's why the whole income gap argument is sort of bogus, because it doesn't take into account what the cost of living is where you live.

To understand that would require a level of self-examination and higher thinking that the (D)Ullards are incapable or completely unwilling to do.  The bulb flickers, every once in awhile, but they always go back to eViLcOpOraTiOnS!!!1111 because it's easy for them and it doesn't require a re-evaluation of their inherently faulty worldview.

I wonder how many of the "I want free healthcare, but I didn't think I would have to pay for it" folks have really woken up or is it just another bulb flicker.

"B-b-but, the government pays for that, .....we don't."  :hammer: :hammer: :hammer: Idiots.

It is, but then the (D)Ullards would be required to give up their wallet envy.

WC: "What does your "Avenge Me" Ronald Reagan avatar mean? "  It's just part of the VRWC.  Don't worry about it.

So WC, how do you feel about Ron Paul?
