The resignation this month of Osmo Vanska from his decade-long role as director of the Minnesota Orchestra over salary disputes with the board spurred John Halle, director of studies in music theory and practice at Bard College, to argue at Jacobin that “the virtues of classical music are inherently hostile to (the) neoliberal mindset now dominant in all sectors of society.â€
Hundreds of my own conversations with middle-class youths in classrooms, bars and cafes around the country—compared with conversations with members of elder generations—suggest that Americans are increasingly uncomfortable with distinctions of high and low forms of art, particularly with classical music. Halle points to a time when this was not so, and suggests that difference has to do with support ruling elites offered the arts in the past. In the 1930s, he writes, “while there was some competition from popular music … a clear division between high and low musical forms remained accepted across the board, with what was universally regarded as the precious legacy of concert music claimed and lavishly supported by both fascist and Soviet regimes alike.â€
“What has emerged in recent years is the exact opposite,†he continues, and the abdication of economic control to mindless markets by states around the world, with the subsequent selfishness and inequality, is a primary cause. “On the one hand, government lavishes unprecedented economic and social privileges on its elites, taking an axe to programs benefitting those who fall behind. At the same time, the distinction between high and low artistic culture having been erased, the result has been a single standard for qualitative judgments derived from the commercial marketplace.â€
It’s hard not to avoid making a connection, Halle writes. “The decline of musical literacy and the large-scale forms which they make possible, the increasing demand for immediately catchy tunes, striking sonorities and flamboyant stage presentations pairs with the impatience of the elites classes†in “the demand for investments to show an immediate short-turn return. Elites have long since jettisoned the expectation for steady growth embodied in the now retired Goldman-Sachs slogan, ‘long-term greedy,’ having come to accept and even embrace … ‘the erosion of the planning function, and any rationality beyond the most crudely instrumental.’ †........................(more)

I was looking forward to reading something about actual capitalism and actual murder. Instead, we got this prissy bit of NPR crap:

Some guy quit his job with some second-rate orchestra because his need was greater than their ability, and some other guy blames the new leftists for not being leftist enough.

1) He was a director, not an artist. This man was a paper pusher. He was a bureaucrat-easily replaced.
2) I had thought demanding a higher salary was essentially a capitalist thing. Socialists work for the joy of working
3) He is not dead, just unemployed. Big difference. In fact, he probably knows Doug Bulna.
4) having a name like Osomo is going to make finding this article real easy for future employers. "So you quit over salary issues, Olsomo? Do you have an inflated sense of self worth?"

I could have sworn I saw, peeking from behind the blond moonbat beside dear Andy, a tall, thin fellow with unfashionably long hair.

I enjoy classical music quite a lot. That being said, much of the music for them has already been written and recorded. My daughter actually likes Vivaldi, especially the winter stanza, she was surprised to find out the music is almost three hundred years old. She routinely used Spanish music for her figure skating.
This thing between high art and low art? Every one of the DUmmies would call Shakespeare high art. Shakespeare had to get the average Londoner to come into the Globe to watch his shows or the Globe wouldn't have been open for long. I am not saying he didn't have patrons, he most assuredly did, but that didn't change the fact that he needed ticket sales.

Remarkable what a symphony Orchestra can do with modern music.
Take the music from the past that we danced to----My favorite was the Boston Pops arrangement of "White wedding day" and some of the Doors music.
Even the ZZ Tops music and on to the Oak Ridge boys, Screw that old time 5 generations back to be played, the symphony's will get a bigger draw with playing music that we recognize and loved in our life time.
Darn, the Beetles Eleanor Rigby came close to bring me to tears.

Fantastic thanks Zombie. Those were the days of dance music, we could understand every word of the lyrics and there were no Mosh Pits.
Only thing I wonder about is the hair on the men, it has been a long long time since I saw young men with all that hair. In fact the men ,some of them were prettier then a couple of the girls dancing behind them.
