Title: Pelosi will initiate Fairness Doctrine Proceedings
Post by: Rebel on June 25, 2008, 10:25:11 AM
Quote
The speaker of the House made it clear to me and more than forty of my colleagues yesterday that a bill by Rep. Mike Pence (R.-Ind.) to outlaw the “Fairness Doctrine” (which a liberal administration could use to silence Rush Limbaugh, other radio talk show hosts and much of the new alternative media) would not see the light of day in Congress during ’08.  In ruling out a vote on Pence’s proposed Broadcaster's Freedom Act, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.-CA.) also signaled her strong support for revival of the “Fairness Doctrine” -- which would require radio station owners to provide equal time to radio commentary when it is requested.

Experts say that the “Fairness Doctrine,” which was ended under the Reagan Administration, would put a major burden on small radio stations in providing equal time to Rush Limbaugh and other conservative broadcasters, who are a potent political force.  Rather than engage in the costly practice of providing that time, the experts conclude, many stations would simply not carry Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and other talk show hosts who are likely to generate demands for equal time.

At a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor yesterday, I asked Pelosi if Pence failed to get the required signatures on a discharge petition to get his anti-Fairness Doctrine bill out of committee, would she permit the Pence measure to get a floor vote this year. ...

In other words, these are her plans to kill the opposition. How "Democratic".  :whatever:

F'n bitch. No way in hell is this fair. There are open channels in EVERY market, and I've been to some of the largest. All these fools need to do is start their own Damn radio station.

Oh, that's right, they did and they failed. No one wants to listen to a bunch of morons trashing the country on a daily basis and corporate sponsors aren't too quick to flock to advertise on stations who denigrate them as being evil.

**** you, Nancy. Why don't you work on that 12% approval rating, you worthless bitch.  :censored:

In my humble uneducated opinion, seems to me that the "Fairness Doctrine" walks all over the First Amendment. Let her try and then watch for it to be challenged in the SCOTUS. This is just another step towards Socialism.

I didn't think so.

They never did extend it to the newspapers and magazines when it was law the first time.

This was and has been always a broadcast only restriction to make sure that the ONLY point of view that the people see is the one the media WANTS you to see.

And what Stretch is attempting to do is put the Genie back in the boottle.

The McCain/Feingold debacle walks all over the First Amendment.  President Bush signed off on it saying that he expected the Supreme Court to stomp it down.  The Supreme Court upheld that mockery to the Bill of Rights, and now we're supposedly stuck with this abortion.

Do we really want to go through all that again with "Fairness Doctrine"?

she's got to give them something since impeachment is "off the table".

if major markets opt not to run Limbaugh and others to avoid the fairness doctrine, their stations are going to tank.

Actually the supremes struck down enough elements of the Mccain/Feingold bill that it contains more loopholes than the bill was entended to plug or eliminate. Typical campaign Finance reform.

This ain't 1985 and this is the worst possible timing for Pelosi & Co. to be showing their Marxist horns.

Maybe Pelosi's goal is to kill the Fairness Doctrine once and for all.

I don't think they really care if people see their marxist leanings.

They'll see whatever gains in Congress and possibly the WH as their "mandate" to implement "change" and this will be the start of it.

They will do whatever they can to blunt the chances of the next Reagan Conservative ever taking the Presidency or the gavel in Congress again.

Remember...these folks think America thinks like they do.

This not only steps on the First Amendment, but also the free market. Liberals have tried (humorously) to have talk shows paid for soley by commercials.... nah, not happening. Because NOBODY WANTS TO LISTEN TO LIBS WHINE!!!
The reason Rush. Levin, Hannity, and Beck do so well is because they speak to the minds and hearts of millions of conservatives, they're entertaining, and they LOVE THEIR COUNTRY! Opposite with the libs.

Unfortunately, it won't be this November, unless McCain decides that he wants to win.

The next two (2010 and 2012)?  Probably.

Pelosi..... third in line for the presidency....... Imagine somebody who has no comprehension of limits of federal government power as being president..... well, then again... we've had those presidents for decades upon decades.... but SHE is the absolute WORST.

Exactly. They can't initiate fairness on THAT ****ing program, of which they DO control, what the hell do they think they're going to do in the free-market? I guess it's a pseudo-free market now.  :whatever:

We have not one, but two NPR stations here.  One is the standard NPR propaganda; the other one is an all-news AM station, like CNN but with a longer attention span.

I love you Rebel.

Even though I'm more liberal than some, I don't feel it's the government's responsibility to "force" viewpoints upon everyone.  There's plenty of access to conservative vs liberal viewpoints.  The "fairness doctrine" is retarded at this point.

I agree and I told someone on my other site, who said it's about the public owning the airwaves, they can buy their own station. There are two conservative stations here. AM 580 and AM 1630. ...and a WHOLE lotta ****ing static between. 1630 had Colmes on, but no one listened. NO ONE. Are sponsors going to advertise on a program that calls them evil? Are people going to listen to people that constantly talk about how ****ed up this country is? NO! Rush, et. al. are entertaining. I don't listen that often, but I DO listen to the most entertaining sumbitch on radio, Neal Boortz, a Libertarian, religiously.

This is now about fairness. It's about control and shutting the opposition up. I've been in the Seattle market. The Newark market. The NYC market. The Dallas market. There are PLENTY of stations they could purchase. They tried....with Air America. Didn't work out too well.

No one listens to Colmes b/c he's an idiot.

Also I never needed to listen to Air America.  I see what DU posts of what they say, and I know I don't need to waste my time.  I lost all interest in Randi Rhodes when she said we were digging mass graves in New Orleans, when it's under the ****ing sea level.

I head Big Ed Schultz is pretty good as a liberal. Heard it from one of his friends. Ironically, that friend being another big guy, Neal Boortz.

Really?

He and Boortz are good friends because they're both tall men, Boortz being 6'4" and Ed, I think about the same, and they're both pilots. Boortz was asked to sit on some interview in England and they asked him if he knew anyone else with his views. The topic was about political radio's impact in America. He told them it should be someone on the opposite pole, so he suggested his friend Ed. They're both scheduled to appear this summer.

I used to work with a black guy in his late 40's.  He hated Colmes because he thought he was too much of a wimp and was not liberal enough.  The majority of the IT department at Ford was black (about 90%) and mostly agreed with this point of view.

This guy saw himself as a traditional southern/Tennessee Democrat, but he was as far to the left as the kookiest of kooks at DU.
