If this is considered "affordable", I want no part of it:

My Parents Are 57 and 61, Both Smokers, Finally Got Through on Healthcare.gov (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10024065355)
They were originally going to go with the cheapest Silver plan, but it had a $2500 deductible and $11,600 max out-of-pocket. So I suggested they check out the Gold and Platinum plans, just for comparison. They are both in pretty good health (besides their smoking habit) but my dad had to undergo an angioplasty a few years back, clogged arteries. My dad got laid off his long-term job as an HVAC salesman a couple years ago, had been drawing unemployment and paying into a COBRA plan that cost over $500/month just for himself. My mom has been uninsured for years since arthritis stopped her from working. (She never applied for disability.)
They both have a modest 401K which my dad has been drawing on these last couple years which about to run out, but Social Security kicks in for him next year so that should help somewhat. Then my mom can start drawing on her 401K until she makes it to 62 herself. They were surprised to find out they qualified for a $611 monthly tax credit. They ended up going with a Platinum plan, the premium which costs just over $647/month for the both of them. $0 deductible, and only a $3000 max out-of-pocket. Not too bad considering their age and the fact that they admitted to being smokers on the application.
I'm trying to get them to quit smoking, try e-cigarettes or something, so they can save an additional $100/month on their insurance, then they would only be paying around $550/month for a Platinum plan. This will be much better coverage than they ever had their whole working lives, which is especially important now that they are at that critical age where they are at most risk: over 55, yet not quite old enough to qualify for Medicare. I'm just glad they will both be covered again. I was worried about my mom going so long without insurance.
The ACA really is making a difference in many people's lives. I hope they are able to get the kinks worked out and make this thing work. At least until we finally get around to expanding Medicare for all. One step at at a time...

Just over $647/month? These parents sound like they're skating on the edge. No income, drawing down that 401K that's really supposed to last until you croak. It sounds like they're living on pennies, $647 would seem to be quite out of reach. Where's that money coming from?
-
$647 a month? My mortgage isn't even that high.
-
Hey DUlagc. If money is going to be so tight they need to quit smoking to save $100 on insurance, why not consider how much can be saved if they quit smoking.
I'm trying to get them to quit smoking, try e-cigarettes or something, so they can save an additional $100/month on their insurance
FYI, if the parents are going to squeeze out a living with the amount left from social security, $647 from the one check isn't going to leave much. My own SS check is under $1100 (after deductions).
I don't *really* see where obamacare is doing them a favor.
-
And this type of crap is what we're fighting against, DUmmies who consider such prices "affordable" and Obamacare a "success". :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

they should have lied about the smoking. That's what the navigators in Texas are advising people to do.

Yea, pretty good health. I see obummercare bankrupting these people.
-
The DUmmy is claiming they get $611 a month in subsidies.

I see Obummercare bankrupting the nation because of those people. 611 in subsidies, read someone else paying for their damn healthcare.

Speaking of ACA, let me share a post from Kenny Blankenship, who is probably skating on thin ice now.
It's both honest and coherent.

When people are hard pressed, they progressively become more fearful and conservative (selfish). This is hardly a new wrinkle in human behavior, but clueless Democrats never seem to take human nature into account.
Then layered on top of the steadily worsening economic situation for the 99%, (for which they are beginning to look at fault) the Democrats come along and make their usual cluster**** out of health care "reform". People in the 99% don't see the promised benefits. They see it doesn't live up to the hype. Their premiums have just gone up and up since ACA passed, and they start to worry and resent that they are going to be soaked to provide benefits to people with even less (which is quite true, ACA soaks the middle class to provide benefits to the working poor, and will do this more and more as more and more employer plans fall under the "Cadillac tax" due to medical inflation. If ACA had been funded by a Wall St. tax, well it all might be different but you know Democrats and Wall St. - thick as thieves!
So now the very people who voted in 2008 to give Democrats a chance to turn the country around are turned off by the high cost, by the horrific complexity, by the sudden injection of the coercive power of the state into their most private decisions, by the general dysfunction typified by the healthcare.gov website, which they sense is just the beginning, and by the myriad broken promises used to sell this shit sandwich to the country. They become at last susceptible to the GENERAL MESSAGE of Republicans, that government has no business interfering in this important area of their lives because it can't do anything right, and ultimately it doesn't do things to benefit ordinary people like themselves.
Way to go Democrats! Your incompetence and craven corporate bootlicking has destroyed America's hope and the good will of citizens, each to the other. You have reaffirmed in their minds the Republican social model of a War of each against All. You have no one but yourselves to blame.

You act like we have no money, we can just tax the evil rich and print a bunch more money. It's not like it will eventually collapse. Besides it's all Bush's fault, and Obama had no knowledge that something was wrong.

She still calls us selfish, even though it is their selfish demand for freebies that will destroy us all. We are willing to work and earn everything we need and want. How is that selfish?

Roughly 7300 bucks a year to people that by the sounds would owe no income tax. :censored:

The bolded is close to correct. Three kinds of people voted the Democrats into office in 2008.
The first group is dead people. We don't know why the voted Democrats as since they are dead we can't ask them. Since they are dead we don't even know HOW they dug themselves out of the grave and voted Democrat.
The second group have mental issues and are too stupid to know any different. People from this group can often be found at sites like DemocratUnderground. The democrat powers-that-be don't really give a shit about this group because the PTB know that this group will constantly pull the "D" lever regardless of what happens due to low intelligence.
The third group bought into the democrat line of stealing from people and handing it out to others. They saw free shit in their future. A part of this group is your biggest problem because some of them are starting to realize that they are the ones getting stolen from INSTEAD OF being the ones getting free shit.

57 and 61 years old and smokers to boot. DUmmies, if you're going to spin bouncies, I suggest making the enrollees younger and healthy--that's what BarryCare is going to need if it's going to survive for the long haul. Bouncies with healthy youngsters are the only kind of bouncies that can save BarryCare from the dreaded death spiral.

Sorry the Bronze plan is the lowest plan at 60/40 and a $6500 deductible.
A thought just hit me. Formerly the health care industry was 1/6+/- of the economy. However, now with premiums roughly doubling it is a lot more than that. I don't care if someone else is paying it is doubling the cost of insurance, PERIOD. Now insurance isn't actual healthcare but is this just another way to make the rat earred bastard look like his affirmative action ass is increasing the GDP?
Much like Obama, I knew the cACA democrat health care would be bad but even I underestimated how bad it would really be.
I knew premiums would jump but double? NO.
I knew that treatment options and doctor options would be less but dropping by 80%? NO.
I knew that doctors would be leaving the system but never that there would be such a narrow list of doctors in network.
I never dreamed that deductibles would double.
I NEVER dreamed that there would ever be a 60/40 insurance plan.
I NEVER thought that deductibles would triple nor that co-pays would quadruple.
My god this is a 20X of my very worst expectations.

One thing I am going to do is change my withholding on my W-9 for next year, and put my "tax" in a savings account.
I refuse to pay a penny in penalties so some DUmbass can have a healthcare "subsidy". :argh:
What's left after one year would pay my healthcare costs for the next 10.

"Obamacare saves old folks enough to buy cigarettes even after the added Obama tobacco tax hike".
How's that for a headline?
