I'm a 31 year old manchild who has refused to grow up...
I've come to this conclusion before and from an outside observer perhaps it's the obvious one but I've never felt as strongly or as badly about it as presently. I'm not childish in my day to day behaviour and in fact if you were yo meet me it's likely you would come away with the impression that I'm wiser than my age. But when it comes to life choices I've made I'm a huge cluster ****.

I do have other issues such as bad social anxiety, depression and perfectionism, but when it comes down to it the real problem is I'm terrified of life and would rather hide away here at home and just sleep all the time. Sadly my parents have enabled me to do so for a long time. When it comes time to face life and make hard choices I run away, drink alcohol, and or burn my bridges and let someone else deal with it. I've rarely managed to accomplish anything as a result.

It's time this changed but I don't really know how. It's a painful and embarrassing realization that you are a 12 year old 30 year old who just wants to run and hide all the time but it's largely the truth. The current psychiatrist I'm seeing seems to be more on the tough love side of things which is probably what I need right now to some extent. I'm not sure what my next step should be though. I've burned so many bridges and quit school so many times that it's difficult to know where to begin or get motivated enough to even want to try. It will take a year or two no mater what I do before I break new ground, I've been back to square one too many times. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry for the rant.

Sorry LocoNuts, but you've already trod this ground before.  You're going to have to come up with something more creative if you want to be more in the running for a DOTY.

1. Up until age 22/23 I was pretty much on the right track. Earned my degree and everything.

Since then, other than my writing - now working on my third novel - I haven't done a whole lot, mostly living off my family even when I didn't live with them. Then again, this whole time I've seen most of my friends work menial jobs, feel frustrated and stuck, and other than my (not quite complete) lack of relationships with the opposite sex, they haven't done a whole lot better in life than I have.

So here I am, a (just turned) 29-year-old man - somewhat stunted perhaps but not exactly a manchild - pissed off and scared, trying not to let my misanthropic tendencies overwhelm me. Hoping that the things I have done, and will do, will someday be worth something.

I'm a 31 year old manchild who has refused to grow up... Identifying the problem is the first step to overcoming it.
I've come to this conclusion before and still you can't figure out the problem?and from an outside observer perhaps it's the obvious one but I've never felt as strongly or as badly about it as presently. I'm not childish in my day to day behaviour and in fact if you were yo meet me it's likely you would come away with the impression that I'm wiser than my age. horse shit But when it comes to life choices I've made I'm a huge cluster ****. No argument here, loser!!

I do have other issues such as bad social anxiety, depression and perfectionism, What are you trying to perfect? Being a loser? I think you succeeded beyond your wildest dreams, loser!!! but when it comes down to it the real problem is I'm terrified of life and would rather hide away here at home and just sleep all the time. Get off yer ass and get a job!!!! Sadly my parents have enabled me to do so for a long time. They will die one day loser, then what?  When it comes time to face life and make hard choices I run away, drink alcohol, and or burn my bridges and let someone else deal with it. No shit. I've rarely managed to accomplish anything as a result. I would say you have never accomplished anything but being a worthless loser.

It's time this changed but I don't really know how. Get off yer ass and get a job, loser!!!It's a painful and embarrassing realization that you are a 12 year old 30 year old who just wants to run and hide all the time but it's largely the truth. Sorry for the rant.

He must have been reading us here. He has identified the problem... he just does not want to solve it. He will when his parents die and he is sleeping on a park bench. Personally, I think he is just lazy.

I've made a shit ton of mistakes in my life and I could of made much better choices, but unlike the DUmmies I don't blame everyone else for my bad choices. Instead I do what I have to do to survive and am grateful for all that I do have. Then again I'm an adult.

These two really need to take the bull by the horns and get it over with.  When their host organisms die or cut them off it will be a slow miserable death.

Mythsaje?

At first impression, it sort of sounds like the long-gone maudlin waif, but he was a very long time ago, and is surely close to 40 years old by now.  One wishes he'd come back to Skins's island.  He was a victim of Pamela's plagiarism and the wrath of Ms. Ed (the "Horse With no Name" primitive), who was pissed at him for getting the then-"greenbriar" primitive banned for a few days.

As far as Ms. Ed was concerned, it doesn't matter what one does; all that matters is who one is.

For those who don't know, Mythsaje, from somewhere around Oregon, was born and raised in a hippie commune, and had aspirations of becoming a writer.

He had talent in that direction, but he misused it.  The maudlin waif was good at describing his working life and the people around him, a milder style of Jimmy Breslin or Studs Terkel, but he did that so rarely, instead concentrating upon silly science fiction-fantasy stories, in which he sucked.

Unlike most of the other primitives, the maudlin waif worked for a living--he had an ex-wife and child support for two boys to pay--in the back room of Target, as a stock-boy or something.  He had a motor vehicle that made the mole bobbolink's 1980s Buick seem up-to-date and in good working order.

His most touching, his most human, campfire on Skins's island involved a description of his ex-wife and him mutually buying Christmas presents for their two boys.  He and his ex-wife didn't get along, loathed and detested each other, but for the sake of the two kids, bought their Christmas and birthday presents together.

If the maudlin waif would've taken franksolich's long-ago advice and counsel, he'd probably be a six-figure-a-year syndicated newspaper columnist by now.

It's very odd, how primitives who don't take franksolich's advice and counsel end up.

On the plus side, if LocoNuts were to win a DOTY, it would be the first success in his pitiful life, and could well be the last.

Just a reminder, folks; one week from today, the rules for nominations for the Top DUmmies of 2013 will be posted, and then three days later, on Thanksgiving Eve about supper-time, nominations will be accepted for the next ten days following.

And then voting's from Sunday evening December 8 about supper-time, until Wednesday December 18 about 10 p.m. central time.  (Also, remember this year voting's by private ballot only--although during the balloting, there's no rule against any of us yakking about the primitives for whom we voted.)

Oh Boy, Ida is going to get reemed for this.  I'll lay money some of the DUmmies are going to go all "Troll, Troll" on her.  Loco Nuts, listen to Ida and your therapist, do something, anything, put on your Big Boy pants.  I especially like the volunteer work, go work at a homeless shelter or an old folks home.  Anything to get out of the house.

Harsh Truth:

SUCK IT UP.

I was a young high school graduate (age 17) and ended up supporting myself while working for less than minimum wage at a local fast food restaurant during my self funded first year of college. I ended up getting better mediocre jobs because I learned that the electric company shuts off your electricity if you don't pay them, and gas money is a necessity if you want your car to move.

That was thirty years ago, but fortunately I was raised with a work ethic, so I was able to make it, and things have been generally good in my life.

Personally, I think your social anxiety is a learned behavior at this point, which means you need to UNLEARN it. A terrible job is a great motivation to get a better one - GO GET A JOB.

Then get all crazy, Do The Job Well.

Are people mean to you? Who cares? You can whine about it here, but you STILL DO THE JOB.

Want to quit? Find a better job first.

Personally, if I were your parents, (and you can share this with them) your room would be empty of every comfort including your bed and the weed stash that helps you "relax" so you don't feel the shame and stress of being a completely useless parasite instead of a hard working contributor to society until you started earning the privilege of having those things back via demonstrating your commitment to getting off your butt and WORKING.

I've seen your posts before - you could have been doing volunteer work for free at the local shelters (human or animal), or become a Red Cross disaster relief aid worker in a few easy classes, or been helping out elderly neighbors with yard maintenance, or learned how to do website development if you don't like being around people/want to be an online only worker.

Seriously, just DO IT.

I have, you can, and after eighteen, your problems belong to you, not your parents, so GET MOVING ALREADY.

If you want to sit around doing nothing, bored out of your mind, go commit a low level crime and go to prison so the taxpayer can foot the bill and you can quit eating into your poor parents retirement money. (Frankly, they need to boot you out.)

ON EDIT: You and I have also talked about the importance of getting your depression treated, and I still stand by this post. You *need* to get our of the basement!

Brought to you by the Tough Love Committee.

3. Start working, hoss

Just get a job. Doesn't really matter if it pays a whole lot. You're living at home after all. Get a full time job. It doesn't matter if it's your ideal gig or not. It would probably be better if it isn't.

Just get in there and get dirty and tired. Work overtime. When you get done at your job, buy a 40 of beer on the way home and drink it while you sit in your chair and feel your bones ache.

Don't even think about doing anything else or what your future plans might be. Pretend that this is all there is. Hard dirty work for 50 or 60 hours a week, and a big beer afterward while you sit in your chair and watch mindless sitcoms until you doze off.

After you have done that for a while...say a year...reflect. You'll see that your life is monotonous and tiresome. Now imagine that is all you have to look forward to until you are able to retire.

That is what life is like for a lot of people in America and I would imagine Canada, too. And we have it good by world standards.

20. Watch the "Magnum, P.I." series

If Magnum can do it, so can you. By the end of the series he had completely changed his ways. Hopefully you will not have to endure four or five near death experiences for it to take root like it did with him.

Exactfriggintactly. I made huge bad decisions in my life.  Until I had my first kid and then I knew I was responsible for a life for life.  I grew up that day.  I look on people that actually boast about this attitude of theirs like Obama looks on poor people.
