I was thinking this past weekend while laid up on my back. Obamacare has changed the working hours to be 30 hours or more for "full time" if I am understanding correctly. Do you think that in the near future the libs/unions will try to replace the 40 hr workweek with a 30 hr workweek and anything over that 30 is now OT thus killing small business even more?
Figure yall could school me on this aspect. What do you think?

What is this "40 hour week" of which you speak?
Yeah, it's either a shitload more hours, or part-time. Fewer and fewer doing "just" 40 a week.

According to the Texas State Insurance Board, a full time employee is defined as one working 30 or more hours per week. It's been that way for a good long time.

Does that mean that if someone goes over 30 hours they have to be paid OT? Sorry I really don't know this stuff.

No. The 30 hours is for tax and benefits (such as insurance) purposes. You don't hit OT until 40 hours.

Not everywhere. They're trying to take out the time-and-a-half OT we've got now.
They're also trying to tell the non-union (exempt) folks they can be worked over 40 with NO compensation. For now it's straight time for them. Yeah, that's gonna work.

I can see employers hiring 2 people working 20 (or less than 30) hrs a week in place of one person, if it's cheaper for them, (eliminating overtime pay and benefits). I'm wondering too about productivity. Do you get more production out of two people than you do with one?

My guess is, 30 hours will become the new standard workweek. And anything over 30 will be considered over time. There will be several reasons for this, such as the standard DUmmy reasons more free time and things like that, the other reasons will probably be related to global warming. Naturally they will demand the same pay as for a 40 hour week. It's a brave new world comrades!

Could go either way, you can argue that 2 people working that 40 hours will improve efficiently because they won't get as fatigued, or you can argue that efficiently will decline because less work will get accomplished with 2 different people with different methods completing the same tasks. I think it all depends on the nature of the job on which way it would go.

I think your right. If the work isn't over complicated and is repetitive, I can see having two part time employees being more productive. There might even be a production incentive with the competition between two people not wanting the other guy to outdo them.
There was a study recently that showed a lot of employees don't always give the employer a full 8 hour day. I think it was more like 6 hrs, even though they got paid for 8.

My compensation package is similar. It's possible for me to be paid for the hours that I work over 40, but it involves paperwork that must be submitted just at the right time that I rarely have the time to stop and fill outover the course of my day, if I want to have any time with my family before The Boy goes to bed. It's usually easier for me to just allow the excess hours to be rolled over into my PTO account.

If the company you work for is involved in interstate commerce, you could contact the appropriate state/federal labor board and they would investigate them. That way a lawyer would not be involved and the company might suspect but would not know if you turned them in.
I left a job after working 2 different jobs at a golf country club. I requested a week's vacation pay cause I had worked there for over a year. My boss was a jerk and the club president gave me the run around. So, I sued them for min. wage when I worked as an assistant golf pro working 70 to 80 hours a week. They settled out of court and it cost them a lot more than a week's vacation pay.

I'm salary, too, and rarely work less than 50 hours a week, sometimes more and occasionally less. The company I work for also has the 30 hour week = full time for benefits. And over 40 hours in a week is overtime for hourly staff.
I have a person in my department who wants anything over 8 hours to be paid at overtime. But knowing this person, I am certain they would load hours early in the week and not be available on Fridays, giving themselves a three day weekend repeatedly.

My usual schedule is 3 12 hour days a week, so a 36 hour work week, and overtime kicks in once we are over 36 for the week.

Yup-o had this going on for years until management got smart and changed it to overtime only after working a full 40 hours.
They tried the 4 day work week for 10 hours a day----sold us on the idea that every week we would have a 3 day weekend. Great we thought we can make doctors appointments and what ever on a Friday and not have to take time off from work. this lasted a month and then mandatory overtime on Fridays was posted.
Now something new -again- a 5 day 8 hour work week but, they could post Mandatory 8 hours on Sat and Sunday. Great now we are working 7 days a week. The money comes rolling in but with no down time our body's were wearing out and accidents and mind zoning out common.
Then comes the day a strange kid walks in the door and you don't recognize them as your kid. Working 56 hours a week puts money in the bank until come April and because of taxes you find you worked 16 hours overtime at a rate of $8.00 an hour. Not even close to 1/2 your normal pay much less the 1 1/2 Sat. in over time and double time on Sun. The tax man gets you with the over time.

My mom stopped working when I around 2 years old because, due to the mandatory overtime at her job, she felt like she was the babysitter. She dropped me off at my babysitter's house when I was still mostly asleep, then I was usually asleep by the time she picked me up.

This is the way it goes today, woman have other people raise their kids to work outside the home. Here comes the guilt trip and the parents shower their kids with what they want as a substitute for their own hands on care of the children.
If both parents work many hours including weekends, the kids spend a maximum of 2 hours a day with their parents.
Meanwhile during this time clothing has to be washed, dinner cooked, floors washed and carpet cleaned. Phones answered, bills paid and time spent grocery shopping.
It is no wonder some kids grow up feeling abandoned. And the loss of quality time with spouse does lead to divorce as the parents never have a chance to be together, have fun without having to not worry about the kids, bills or Aunt Nellie's hemorrhoids.
Sad world today, and I suspect this is a good start to controlling future generations by
others with control intent.
Somehow it has been made almost impossible to have a single worker in the family to raise their own children. For the average Joe and Jane to not both work and raise just one child not to mention 2-3+ others, would put them into a state of living back 100 years ago.

I work 3-12s too, but my OT is anything outside my scheduled shift of 5:30am to 6:00pm, with double time paid outside my shift on Sundays. There have been times when I had more OT and DT than straight time.

Sorry Gina, been busy working more than 40 hours this week.....Mike had it right. 40 plus gets you OT, but 30 + is the definition of full time for taxes and benefits.
