I will not shop in any establishment that makes its employees work on Thanksgiving
I know there are bigger issues in the world..... But this is just one more way that corporations are devaluing their workers.
Let them have one ****ing day off to be with their families.
Personally, I will boycott for the entire Christmas season any store that is open on thanksgiving.
I am looking at you, Macy's and Kmart.
...and it goes over like a wet fart in church. (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023981737)

1. Many employers pay 1.5X or double time. Health care workers, cops, firemen and many others ....
... work every holiday. So what's the big deal?
Not to mention the quizzical DUmmy regard for Thanksgiving when less than a month ago they were roasting Columbus on a spit for having the nerve to visit before the Indians walked across Alaska.
Really, lurkers, if the white man is the source of all evil in North America, why do you countenance Thanksgiving at all? Instead, every year we hear endless stories about your freeper relatives
RUINING your Thanksgivings?
Said differently, why is Thanksgiving more or less DU's favorite holiday? I don't get it. It celebrates the presence of the nasty white man on sacred Indian territory (which come to think of it, why
then are Muslims allowed in Scandinavia? Oh well - can't expect you to be consistent when you're as stupid as you are)

6. Cops and fireman know it comes with the job
As a society we need cops a firefighters to work. Society will not collapse if Macys closes for a day. I dont think its too much to ask to close one day a year to let people be with their family. I wont buycott those companies all season but I will not buy anything on Thanksgiving.
Um, DUmmies? Macy's employees already get days off. In fact, because of 0shitheadcare, they're probably getting LOTS of days off. (168-29)/24 days off per week, in fact.

7. In principle yes, but many younger people love to work on the holidays
for the 2X pay. Often its overtime pay, on top of holiday pay. I usually wind up shopping for something or other on thanksgiving and have had a few conversations with people working - usually its about how great it is to make the extra money and not have to cook and clean.
Well that takes the stuffing out of the turkey, doesn't it, moron?
-
What about markets and restaurants?
I've gone out to dinner twice on Thanksgiving. Both times were wonderful experiences and I wasn't wiped out from all the cooking and clean-up, I actually got to enjoy it.
This year we have six fewer shopping days before Christmas. With the lousy economy, Obamacare kicking in and the competition of on-line shopping, I can see why these companies want to get a jump on black Friday.
-
I can see why these companies want to get a jump on black Friday.
And this will be the 5th year in a row that DUmmies cheer on holiday sales, whereas until Xmas 2008 they hi-fived and hooted when sales flagged. How terrible it must be to be a DUmmy.
-
It seems that if the market demands it then let people go shopping when they want. Get yo hands out of private business!
-
If this becomes a thing, all the primitives not going to the stores would greatly cut down on shop lifting.
-
I guess Macys and Kmart will be laying off quite a few now. :(

FIFY. Less boosting with no DUmmies there.

Not One Damn Dime Day
I got this today from my barely-political mother-in-law:
Not One Damn Dime Day - Jan 20, 2005
Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in
Iraq, since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to
oppose it, Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One Damn Dime Day†in America.
On "Not One Damn Dime Day" those who oppose what is happening in our
name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending.
During "Not One Damn Dime Day" please don't spend money. No one damn
dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse
purchases. Not one damn dime for nothing for 24 hours.
On "Not One Damn Dime Day," please boycott Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target. Please don't go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don't buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter).
For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down.
The object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq
is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and
that it is their responsibility to stop it.
"Not One Damn Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for
the people of the United States of America, not for the international
corporations and K Street lobbyists who represent the corporations and funnel cash into American politics.
"Not One Damn Dime Day" is about supporting the troops. The politicians put the troops in harm's way.
Now over 1,200 brave young Americans and (some estimate) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The politicians owe our troops a plan - a way to come home.
There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing
agenda to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take action by
doing nothing.
You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed.
For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind our
religious leaders and our politicians of their moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and give America back to the people.
When are they going to do this for the soldiers dying in Afghanistan?
-
Ah, yes...when it was patriotic to not shop.
When are they going to do this for the soldiers dying in Afghanistan?
Funny how that works out, ain't it? Dim gets elected and all the sudden war doesn't matter. Convictionless assholes.
-
DUmmies crack/pot/dope of choice dealer will be open Thanksgiving and I bet they don't boycott him.
-
Every time the DUmmies stage a boycott retailers across the country breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that at least for a day shoplifting will cease.
-
Paging Happy Fun Ball with the graphic of the "impact" of a DUmmy boycott on the economy. :-)
-
I gotta agree with this though I would not boycott.. It furacked that co's are opening on Thanksgiving and Christmas..let families be together a couple days per year for celebration.
Total bullsh*t these stores are open those 2 days..
-
I can see that idiot driving around looking for stores that are open, just to not shop there. :lmao:

Tasty.
"But Mr. Jones - if we open, Scheming Dummy won't shop here!"
"That's precisely why we're opening, Jimmy. Now put the sign out. I don't care if no one comes in, so long as one of the ones not coming in is Scheming DUmbass."
-
I am surprise that DUmmies even celebrate Thanksgiving as they think it is oppressive and racist.
Anyways, I do not get the Christmas Creep. Really annoying.

It's good to have a grocery store close by that is open on Thanksgiving and Christmas. A liquor store, too.
-
Meh. I've had to work on every holiday at least once except for Christmas.
-
I forget something every year and wish my husband could make a morning run to the store for me. He will not be pleased that stores are open on Thanksgiving.
-
DUmmies remain in a natural state of boycott. Freebies or the promise of them are irresistible to libs. Only in the case of looting or 5 finger discounting will they come out of their boycotting comfort zone. Sometimes midnight requisitioning will also lure them out.

I boycott 99% of all businesses, every day. I drive right past 'em. I am a boycotting sumbitch.
Hummell figurines and tap dancing shoes- not one damn dime!
I have successfully boycotted the state of Rhode Island for 50 years. Iceland, too. Take that, Iceland!
Today I'll combine a boycott and hunger strike against Mongolian barbecue. Change we can believe in!

Gina's on the right track with this. Liberals and others show their total lack of understanding for consumerism and markets when they get started on these tangents. My own mother is guilty of these tangents herself. The people they really should be upset with is their fellow Americans who want to shop on Thanksgiving--were it not for the consumers, one can be reasonably certain that Kmart and Macy's would not open their doors and pay their employees premium pay to do so. Also, liberals should bemoan their own wailings that over there years have minimized traditional AMERICAN and CHRISTIAN holidays that have afforded people that time off and once was a tone respected and set in corporate halls as they recognized the tone of the consumers around them. Corporations are a reflection of the values they see and wish to emulate to draw in money--right or wrong--so when we see corporations reflecting an oversexualized, consumeristic, disrespectful of family tone--we need only look to the tone of the American public that has helped shape that corporate tone so it can sell products. It is why I never understand their incessant need to tear own Chik-fil-a and Hobby Lobby--their commitment to traditional values affords even NON CHRISTIAN employees a guaranteed weekend day off every week of the year and certain holidays I'd bet too. They scream with gusto at Thanksgiving that this is what they want--family to be appreciated by corporations, yet when one does it because their tone at the head office is one of deference to traditional values they wail about the evil right wing values and boycott that corporation too. you can't win with liberals because of their total lack of consistency on any topic. And btw that tone in most corporate halls that now devalues traditional values was without any doubt set by liberalism. So, this ultimately is another case of 'Own It' for the left. Perhaps more thought as to consequences of tearing down traditions and values would be prudent in the future, eh?
*** As an aside, this is something I take issue with at a corporate level. All the new ways to detect and prevent fraud without the obvious shooting in the corporate toes that goes on by cow towing to an overly hedonistic value system that only perpetuates the motivation for the fraud they seek to avoid. It's all one big cluster**** from the micro example of the idiot liberals to the scratching heads up in the corporate offices. :thatsright:

Dear DUmmies--you know how many holidays, weekends, nights I've worked keeping your lights on?
Meh, **** it--freeze in the dark, ya tards.

I rang in the New Year one year working a trauma code on a 19 year old girl who was ejected from a rollover. I was in the ER on the Y2K with a kid who had swallowed a bottle of vodka and a bottle of pills; I got him to sing "Eve of Destruction" with me when midnight came. I have driven patrol past countless houses on Christmas Eves, covered with Christmas lights and their trees visible through the windows, and the citizens asleep inside. I've eaten Mermite turkey, chow hall ham, station house cooking, hospital food, and jail food for Thanksgiving dinner.
And I loved every bit of it.
-
I've worked on plenty of holidays. At my current job, I'm the only one in my department that has to work between December 22 and January 6. Everyone else gets the time off due to plant shutdowns.
Grow up, DUmmies... it's life.
-
I'll bet the neckbeard weeper will have to work holidays at the Omaha cop shop.
Lots of puke to clean from cruisers on New Year's Eve.
-
Primitives,
When the workplace is closed, money does not come in. Bills still have to be paid for the month. Payrolls still have to be met. My family works ALL holidays and the majority of weekends to ensure all obligations are met for the month. Every month.
KMA you spoiled, entitled crybabies.

I remember working at a restaurant that was open Thanksgiving day. They didn't schedule us for more than four hours at a time, but the place was empty except for us. We hung around the bar shooting the shit, occasionally checking our stations, and wandering around the place.
It was a huge waste of time, but then we were a Caribbean restaurant in the South and not Kroger or Wal-Mart. I've been lucky and never worked in a grocery store.
-
I don't get it. The DUmmies make fun of Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby for closing on Sundays even though they do it for the families that work there, yet complain about about K Mart staying open on a Holiday.
-
What trip's me out about this most, as many have mentioned on here, a shit ton of people work on the holidays. So what retailers in the past have been closed??? Well the market has demanded that they open now, as long as people shop on the holidays those business's will be open. Grow the **** up DUmmies.
-
It was funny how many DUmp democrats said they like Thanksgiving because it's not a religious holiday.
I guess they give thanks to Skimmer.
-
Bet they don't turn down those Christmas presents though.
-
The first thing they tell you when you are hired on at Disneyland is "we work while others play" and that you need to get in that mindset if you want to be a cast member.
I typically work on Thanksgiving because my wife usually heads to Vegas to be with her parents. We have a nice Thanksgiving lunch, then I take her to the airport on the way into work at the park so she can be with her folks in time for dinner. My department is a close knit group and usually have a BBQ before our show. The extra holiday pay is a nice plus as well.
So DUmmies, go ahead, boycott Disneyland because we are open on Thanksgiving (Christmas and kwanza too). I'm sure the park will be a happier place without you projecting your bad attitude.

One of my most fond Thanksgiving memories was that of 1987. My cavalry squadron was at Graf for tank and Bradley gunnery. Our mess crew put on a spread. Well, that day the VII Corps commander flew out to Graf to tour 2d ACR's base camp, among other facilities. He had told the RCO that he would be eating Thanksgiving dinner in one of the mess halls, with the troopers. The RCO and RCSM stopped at our mess hall first. The LTG looked around at the spread, asked a couple of questions, and said to the RCO, "I've made my decision--I don't need to go to the other mess halls. We're eating here. You make sure that these guys get rewarded for this." The RCO turned to my SCO (who was wearing a cheshire-cat-class grin :-) at he time) and said, "Impact ARCOMs for everybody." The SCO turned to the SCSM and S-1, and before the SCO could say anything, the S-1 said, "Sir, I'll have the paperwork for you in an hour." It got done.
The food was awesome, too. I used to love going to gunneries for the food. O-)

Good times.
Christmas morning at Ft Riley, I was on the duty DUSTOFF crew. A church from Junction City brought breakfast (and pie!) to us at the hangar.
The whiny-ass Proglodytes are not wired to appreciate such things. That's one of the things makes them what they are, and what makes us who we are.

What I get paid on one double time shift on Thanksgiving I get all my holiday shopping done with plenty left over.
When I worked at the local grocery store people were damned near fighting each other to get those holiday shifts.
-
Working on a holiday, I get the regular-time holiday pay, or I can take the holiday at a later date.
For the first eight hours, tack on OT at time-and-a-half. After that, it's coded at double-and-a-half time.
So no, it doesn't exactly break my heart to work a holiday.

38. So, people needing money is a good excuse to exploit them?
So, the solution to an eroded middle class with low wages isn't to fight for a livable wage? It's to take away what little benefits they have left? It's okay, they need the money? So let the corporations walk all over them, whatever?
The unions, so badly needed more than ever.

I'm working Thanksgiving this year. Abandoning patients at the hospital just because it is a holiday is generally considered poor form. I am annoyed about holiday work because I was informed yesterday that due to staffing issues I should expect to work Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. I am also working the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. I was counting on traveling home to visit family for Christmas to make up for it, and I was willing to work New Years Eve and New Year's Day in exchange. If I end up having to work Christmas, then I'm going to push for New Year's Eve off as well. I'm frustrated that the lack of coordination and planning on the part of management is basically going to mean that I don't get to fully enjoy any of the holidays this year.
-
We are hospital based medevac. That means 24/7/365, just like the hospital medical caregivers. Rain or shine, sleet or snow. The only organization that is even more strict is the military. In time of war you can be executed for abandoning your post. As a caregiver you only risk your job, your license, and a lawsuit.

ROFL. Did i ever mistype that! I have chronic migraines that cause my vision to blur at times. Earlier tonight I could barely see making it hard for me to proofread. I've already made quite a few edits to other posts I botched.
It was supposed to say: Mole? OR are there actually…
Sorry about that!

My FIRST UNDERWAY on my first boat lasted from November 9th to December 31st, and I had the duty first night in. Oh, and we were deployed. Japan on New Year's? Ever see Tokyo ABANDONED? I have. ****ing eerie.
I can't count the number of times I had the duty on both Christmas AND New Year's Eve just because all the married guys took leave and knocked us down to 3-section duty.
Working 12's on a holiday is kind of par for the course for me--of course, now that I'm a civilian, the pay is a whole lot better.
Whoever said it hit it on the head--businesses are only responding to consumer demand. So a couple of panty-waists get butthurt because WalMart is open? Yeah, I'm sure that WalMart really wants to bend to the will of a couple of drama queens and not the THOUSANDS of people willing to spend a SHITLOAD of money.

The OP who posted that and a couple of the posters defending the OP's statement are consistently on the wrong side of everything.
Compared to you guys here, I'm a total flaming communist liberal who you probably think hates America, but I really cannot stand some of the extreme stupidity displayed on that site by certain clueless members. I won't say who I am on there, because I do like posting there even if I am more 'right' of the majority. I do appreciate and enjoy you guys calling out some of the more ridiculous crap said by some of the brain dead there. I try to do it when I can, but it's a dangerous line to cross. I don't fault the admins for that though, because they can't help that many of their most vocal members are drama queens who hate people with different viewpoints that are not 100% in lockstep with their often times naive world view. Don't get me wrong though, I disagree with a lot of what you guys say in many cases, and think a few of you are just as unreasonable. If you guys don't mind, I'd love to have the opportunity to give what I believe are reasonable counter point of views.

That narrows it down to 99% of them.

You shouldn't have to. You face more critique from them than you would from us. I assure you that Skinner is watching CC.

Plus I am dead solid certain that the wackiest of them also pay the most. Skinner knows who butters his organic, gluten-free Indian bread.

Don't talk about it, just do it. If you come over with fear, trembling, and defiance, you're going to sputter, get bitchslapped, and it will only get worse from there. Turn DU mode off and you will
find people reasonable and willing to discuss. I strongly suggest that if you have anything good to say about 0bongocare, or that any of us are racist, your stay will be unpleasant.

I'm less concerned about Skinner himself, but more concerned about the irrational drama queens who would hound him until he finally gave in. His sites a money making thing for him, he'd just be doing what his cash cows want. Skinner has always came off as being rather rational on many things. Which to me seem evident even if you disagree with his beliefs and stance on an issue. For example, recently a gang of bullies went after a poster because she stated she didn't believe in abortion - I'm not that poster, fyi - even though she seemed pretty liberal in almost everything else. Despite that, these bullies were relentless in attacking her and trying to get Skinner to ban her because she wasn't 100% pure in their eyes. Skinner pretty much told them to screw off, and I applaud him for that. I just hope he sticks to his guns -assuming they don't confiscate them first - with regards to that issue.
-
Heh.. Well, it will be a nice change of pace then. I often times bite my tongue when I'm over there on things I really disagree with, so most of my posts are just boring circlejerk BS.
In spite of the backlash it will cause, I will post my thoughts on Obamacare, but I assure you that it won't just be talking points and whatever. I'll explain how I view aspects of it and why I like or don't like it. I'll try to do it in a way that I assume I'm wrong and need to be educated about it. When I get some time tonight I'll comment on one of the ACA posts on here if it seems like it would fit, or if it's not crossing line, I'd make a new thread if it's alright.

David Allen is a businessman. In over 10 years he's certainly realized that more people = more donations and more clicks = more ads. I wouldn't be shocked if he looks at contributions before deciding to ban someone. As for abortion, here is my problem with DU: abortion is the law of the land. I don't like it, but it is what it is for now. That said, DU has a hive mindset that abortion is some sort of prideful right of passage for a woman. Lately there has been immense backlash against the "safe, legal, and rare" verbiage, in particular that it's inherently anti-choice. This is among the times that I think I could get physically violent with a DUmmy. Here's why:
An abortion is a terribly invasive and unnatural procedure. It is, in technical terms, an insult to the body. Why, then, is it at all objectionable to say that they should be "rare?" Shouldn't all surgeries be rare? Wouldn't someone NOT want to have their body cut on, scooped out, sutured, and scarred? You DUmmies make it seem like an abortion is something to be proud of, like weight loss or getting a missing tooth
replaced. Forget about SHAME - don't you people have ANY rueful feelings about having invasive medical procedures?

Welcome to CC! You sound like you are capable of communicating reasonably without spewing nonsense talking points. Hope you can continue and participate here.

How will they use their EBT cards for last minute meal shopping if all the stores are closed on Thanksgiving?

I've worked in 24/7 manufacturing facilities in which you could not just throw a switch and turn the lights off for a holiday. We had big rolls of aluminum in the oven, baking for days and someone had to be there to pull those trays out when they were done. W

The Obamas Are Eating Nine Kinds of Pie For Thanksgiving
It all sounds delicious and is a potent reminder that an in-house chef and cooking staff seem like a really great perk. Along with the airplane and the ability to appoint Federal Reserve governors, one of the top reasons it would be cool to be president. No word on whether Think Progress will be condemning the Obamas for making people work on the holiday.

Well if you want to destroy America with your mindless leftism, then yes I say you hate America. This country was not founded on your beloved Marxist principles, it was founded on freedom and a limited government. If you don't like that then move to a country that is already a big government country, leave us alone and quit trying to make us subjects of an ever expanding government.
I want the country where the leaders said beware of tyranny, not the one where the president says to ignore those who warn of tyranny.

FWIW, I've already made 3 trips to Walmart today since 9:00 am. :-)
Just doing the job DUmmies refuse to do!

There was another boycott thread over there.
I'll try and find it again and drop it in here.
Found it.

1. I went to Starbucks...
I got coffee for my family and left a $20 tip. Sorry about that.
A kiki is a party, for calming all your nerves We're spilling tea, and dishing just desserts one may deserve And though the sun is rising, few may choose to leave So shade that lid and we'll all bid adieu to your ennui.

4. They are always open, so is Dunkins.
Mass. seems to have laws about non-food retail establishments.

I've not seen any DU protests about municipalities keeping police, fire, medical, etc. personnel from being with their families.
And if the DUmmies shop on line today, will it be with an entity that is ENTIRELY automated, or will there be actual people in the order/shipping departments.
Have they sent emails of protest to help the poor White House staff who must remain at work to prepare and serve the meal to the White House family and potential guests?
DUmmies are quite selective in their outrage.

I was a customer to 2 hospitals, a control tower, and an FBO today, so far. I wished them all a Happy Thanksgiving, what's left of it.

To be honest with you, my guy and I agree with that statement. I know quite a few conservatives who I would say can be just as ridiculous. What I've noticed is it depends on emotionality; Right and the left both can be guilty of emotionality and it generally shows up as not a lot of meat to back up an argument. For example, I agree with my fellow conservatives on much, however it does make me cringe when a fellow conservative can not articulate why they believe what they do--to me that's a pretty solid sign of being TAUGHT to believe something and then just being emotionally invested in it. I normally see it more on the left, but I've seen it with conservative friends too so I get what you are saying. i think it not only makes me cringe because it makes one look like a sheep, but I also think those people are far more malleable in values and beliefs and can turn on a dime if a topic sets off an emotional return. Just my thoughts on that. Welcome.

Yeah this. To the new poster, marxism is not in line with the founding values of this country and as our forefathers saw those rights as inalienable and given by someone greater then ourselves, any political or economic philosophy that infringes on said rights should be rejected.

A story from the black friday front: We're preparing to sell our house so we're trying to knock all the maintenance issues out before the first of the year. My 5 year old and I went to Lowes for some lumber. we live in a small town so the store wasn't overly busy. Anyways, after paying for the lumber, we headed out to the suburban. This thing is a 97 with some dents, dings and 278K on the clock, if we look like we have money, you're out of your mind. This X-type Jag pulls up to me as I'm loading up a couple of bags of concrete. The lady calls me over and asks if I could spare some gas money. Just the audacity of some asshole in a jag begging for a couple of bucks from me took me aback. No cops jumped out of the bushes, but I wish they would have.

Chick-fil-a is closed on Thanksgiving.
Hobby Lobby is closed on Thanksgiving.
As a reminder to the primitives, both of those businesses are now open today, the day after Thanksgiving.
Both businesses look forward to receiving your boycotted dollars you didn't spend yesterday at businesses that stay open on Thanksgiving.

They used pretzel logic to get into this Chick-fil-a/Hobby Lobby dilemma, so let's see them use it to get out.
Well, primitives? Show us your receipts!

I boycotted all stores that were open yesterday, I only shopped at stores that were closed it was great until the cops showed up.

Yo dummie. I "boycotted" all stores that were open on Turkey Day and I "boycotted" them today too. As I will tomorrow and the next day. I got enough beer, food and company to last me until Monday, so this ole boy ain't going anywhere this weekend.
Big freaking deal.
Loser Drama Queen. I'm sure those stores really missed your business.

The income that the stores receive during the holidays greatly helps them keep the doors open the rest of the year.
I know several people that volunteered to work on Thanksgiving and a few were disappointed that they were not allowed to.
-
I am a service tech for a heating company. I worked Thanksgiving and it was cold. The only 4 calls I answered were liberals who caused their own problem like switches turned off and fireplaces burning keeping the thermostat satisfied. Yesterday the day after Thanksgiving was very busy with calls from conservatives who felt bad and did not call us out on the holiday instead using some other form of heat and made the call the next day.
**** you self righteous liberals!
-
Heating is a big problem in democrat houses.
Democrats are so sophisticated and European in everything they do, they often slip up and set their thermostat in centigrade numbers.
Then when the house gets cold, they blame George W. Bush.

I wouldn't be surprised if I went into a primitive's home, and saw a thermostat that read only in Centigrade.

I have boycotted them all. Had a great thanksgiving then enjoyed the company of my family for a few more days.

Delaying or ignoring a visit to the store is not boycotting. Granted, sensible people stay the hell out of the stores on Thanksgiving, but it certainly is not as whiny as boycotting.
