"Why should I pay for the library?" and other Election Day derpitude (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023981278)
My old buddy Ray, the poll worker. Still has that "D" next to his name, although heaven knows why. Never met a Republican he didn't like, or a tax he could live with. He's been working the polls probably since before I was born, and I ain't young.
There's a number of local and state ballot initiatives this year that I spent time getting up to speed on (unlike 99.7% of the voting public). One was a bond issue for our local library. Like, who wouldn't support the library? My dumb.
So I go to vote on my way to work, and there's good ole Ray, with his coffee and his union cap. God love him.
Me: "Hey, Ray, good to see you. Looks like a halfway decent turnout for first thing in the morning."
Ray: "Yeah, lotta stuff going on."
Me: "Think the propositions are helping turnout?"
Ray: "I hope so. We can't let that library thing go through."
Me: "Huh?" (Who votes against the library?)
Ray: "Why should I pay for the library? I don't use it."
(The inside of my head): "Because it's part of your ****ing community, you selfish old dirtbag. I don't have a kid in public school, so why should I pay school taxes? I don't use the town park, so why should I pay for it? I don't go to the dump, so why should I pay for it? Does your interest end at your front door? Is your attitude '**** you, I've got mine?'"
Me: "Well, history is made by those who show up. We'll see what happens."
Sigh. Shaking my head. There are people like this IN OUR OWN PARTY. People like this with big mouths and a voice in local government. This is where it starts, and this is where it's at. Start talking to your neighbors. They will surprise you. Oh, yeah, and show up.
Peace.
:rotf:

First, the DUchebag probably does not pay any taxes but demands from those who do.
Second, why should old Ray pay when he does not use the library?
-
I used to vote for stuff like that, then wondered why my taxes kept going up.
Now I vote against props if they include more state spending.
-
He can just budget his money better and easily afford more taxes for the library.
-
Why should we pay more taxes for the library when Obama is already taxing us to give poor people smart phones, computers and internet access. You don't need a library if you have internet access.

They need them to charge their 0bamaphones.

I don't believe a word of this bouncie. I don't know a single older person who doesn't love and support libraries. Now the multi million $ bike paths, nature trails, and frog sanctuaries are another matter.

That's where cheating spouses go to use computers, facebook and contact dating sites so S.O. can't check up on them.

I might consider voting for bike paths... if the bikers weren't allowed to use the streets..... :whatever: Living near the beach, you can't believe what a nightmare they are here.

Speaking from personal experience, they still use the streets and generally act like assholes.

Why do you hate frogs? [/du mode]

It's a tried and true Democrat tactic.
Libraries are already covered by the local community's taxes. So, a Democrat who wants more money for his/her pet project will re-allocate taxes from places such as schools, roads, libraries etc. to that project, then ask the voters to make up whatever was taken from the things they will usually support without question.
They do the same thing with general budget cuts and losses.
Instead of hurting their projects or their paychecks, they take the funds from schools, cops, and firemen - because people will vote to replenish those funds without a second thought.

I don't have a kid in public school, so why should I pay school taxes?
You shouldn't. All you're paying for is so the unions can have more members to draw more dues to pay bigger campaign funding checks to politicians who raise taxes to pump more money into schools so unions can have more members to draw more dues to pay bigger campaign funding checks to politicians who raise taxes to pump more money into schools so unions can have more members to draw more dues to pay bigger campaign funding checks to politicians who raise taxes to pump more money into schools...
I don't use the town park, so why should I pay for it?
No. It's not a job of government to have parks.
I don't go to the dump, so why should I pay for it?
Dumps can be privatized.
Does your interest end at your front door? Is your attitude '**** you, I've got mine?
Yes.
My freedom are not decided by the fake moral codes you wish to impose.
-
Having seen my property taxes increase 25 percent in the last four years, I'm voting for the mayoral candidate who is pushing for a tax cap and spending cuts.
-
These people are treacherous. Calls his "old buddy" who happens to be in the same party a "selfish old dirtbag", although "lapilzsi" doesn't have the courage to actually say it to him. Wouldn't want him as a political ally, much less as a friend.

Hey DUmmie...I got mine, and I don't give a shit about you or yours.

Seriously, except for the homeless to have a place to watch porn and perverts to prey on children, why do we need brick and mortar libraries funded by the public anymore?
-
Most people have more epubs on their reading device of choice than most libraries have books.

And in Australia copyright rules suggest that if the Author died before 1955 then his or her works are also P.D.

Love Gutenberg! Even Amazon has free classics to download. There is so much out there in public domain that my reader is full. I can't see ever having to step foot in a library again. There's not too many new works out there that interest me. When I am interested, shopping around will usually result in an extremely discounted price. I often find books for 99 cents.

A lot of folks here must have never been in a library.
