Homemade antacids and gatorade
In a thread in the Lounge about indigestion, DUer Denninmi posted this:
"Any eggs in the house? You can take an eggshell, boil it clean, dry it, and powder it completely then mix in water and drink it - it's pure calcium carbonate, chalk, same active ingredient as Tums.
Baking soda works, too, about a quarter teaspoon in 8 ounces of water. "

Rather then throw eggshells away, the above would be another good use for them.
As for homemade gatorade, here is one recipe:
"Homemade Rehydration Drink Recipe Homemade Gatorade or Laborade
1 cup lemon juice (approx 6-8 lemons)
1/2 cup honey or maple syrup (purchase raw honey here)
1 teaspoon sea salt (purchase unrefined salt here)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Place in a pint mason jar and stir to combine (the lemon juice and baking soda will react, so stir it down), keep concentrate in the fridge. This can be added to 1 gallon of filtered water, or add 1-2 tablespoons to each 8 ounces (1 cup) of water."

A very basic rehydration recipe is:
4 1/2 C. water
1/2 tsp. sea salt
8 tsp. sugar

1. Well, using egg shells instead of Tums sure is cheaper! I cannot believe the cost of simple antacids these days. I lived with reflux for so many years that I did permanent damage to my esophagus, so I am now on prescriptions. I would be very willing to try this if I was still eating 10 or more Tums a day. But I am grateful that I don't have to these days.

2. I wonder if there are other uses for powdered eggshells.
Might do some googling just to find out.

3. I always put ground up eggshells in my compost/potting mix.
I just hate to throw anything away!
But you are right...calcium is so important for us, it is a shame to have the eggshells go to waste. There must be ways that they can be used to our benefit. Post if you find other uses.

5. My favorite use from th 9 Things....
7. Use them to start seedlings. If homemade paper pots aren’t your style, give some of your smaller seedlings a start in rinsed-out shells.
I probably like this idea so much because I use the cardboard cartons as seedling starters already and they are a perfect size. The cardboard doesn't have to be removed when the plants are repotted or planted, since they decompose, and the eggs could be crushed around the dirt before planting and also left with the plant. Cool.
I also liked this, since it is a great idea and you can still use the shells for another use when you are done.
11. Blade Sharpening: Keep them in the freezer and use to clean and sharpen blender blades by adding water. Then pour the mixture into your compost bin.

6. That is amazing. It made me wonder if the calcium in the egg shells would be the type that can build up bones if you powder it and ingest it. Web MD and a couple of other sources say calcium carbonate is the form in supplements.
I'm going to try it. I always worry that you pay money for vitamins, and they don't contain anything you think they contain.

7. Eggshell powder + water = toothpaste too.
Doesn't take much

8. An eggshell toothpaste recipe
"Homemade Eggshell Toothpaste
¼ c. Egg Shells or Calcium Magnesium Tablets (Ground up)
1-3 Tbs Coconut Oil
1 Tbs. or less Baking Soda
½ -1tsp. Castile Soap (Optional but I find that it adds some smoothness. I use Dr Bronners Castile Soap. See note above.)
10 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil (please see above note on essential oils.)
1. If using egg shells, give them a quick rinse and bake in the oven at 400 F for 15-20 minutes.
2. Grind up the shells or tablets until powdery fine. I use my coffee grinder for the shells and my food processor for the tablets.
3. Mix the ingredients in a small bowl, adding coconut oil until it is the smooth consistency that you like. * I find that it takes more with the calcium magnesium pills than the eggshells.
4. Store in a small jar and use a small spoon to scoop it on your tooth brush.
5. You can add different essential oils that are said to promote tooth health such as fennel, clove, rosemary, oregano, (to name a few)."

$4.59 for a 96 count bottle at Walgreens....or 2 for $8! Again...how these folks make it through a day without someone reminding them to breathe is beyond me. :whatever:

For the lurking DUmbasses, just use the egg as a suppository. The male DUches would dig it.
