The Truth About Those Canceled Health Plans

I'm one of those people! Why would Obama make health insurance companies cancel my plan? Seems mean.

The fact is, some health insurance on the market today is just lousy. That's a big reason why even people who have insurance can go bankrupt when their medical bills start piling up.

Health insurance you bought for yourself before might have been (or seemed) perfectly okay, but there's a good chance it had big holes in it -- the kind people tend to only find out about when they incur expensive doctor and hospital bills. And if you have a pre-existing condition, or you're older, or you're a woman, you have been paying more for that insurance.

But not all the insurance plans being canceled are lousy. Some people really do like their plans, and they're losing them because of relatively small differences in new Affordable Care Act rules.

The law standardizes health insurance plans by mandating that they cover a basic set of benefits, including hospitalizations, prescription drugs and maternity care, that many insurance products on today's market don't. Obamacare also limits total annual out-of-pocket expenses to $6,350 for a single person, in order to protect people against going broke when they get sick.

You know are you right, who would know better than the government whether my plan is good or not? Never mind that my wife and I have used our plan for the past 4 years and it has covered everything that was promised, never mind that we thought our premiums were very affordable. We were just being silly being happy with low copays, no deductibles, and coverage for under $200 a month. Next year when they start screwing with our plans and our premiums double and we get stuck with a deductible and higher copays we will be much happier. At least if I happen to get pregnant I will have maternity coverage on myself, and will have access to rehab for the drugs that neither my wife and I take.

13. which goes to your original point why it is so important for us to take back Congress

Yeah that will help considering the last time you had congress, they passed the bill that is causing all this.  :mental:

Hey DUmmies your little talking points about how we don't understand how bad our policies were before is not going to fly. When people are paying more on premiums and more out of pocket to hit the deductible they are going to get mad.

They may get it too.

This whole exercise has been to shift public opinion so that more people will want single payer.

Canceling plans that people are happy with and raising premiums and deductibles on most of the remaining plans will go a long way to achieving that goal :whatever:

Not quite full on socialized medicine.  The overlords will have a slightly different standard of care than the drones.  And, the DUmmies (with the possible exception of Skimmer) are going to wake up on the wrong side of that equation.

Gang, I still think that this debacle will make the public--the moderates, at least; who tend to swing elections--very reluctant to have any more govenment intrusion in health care.  Time will tell, of course, but that's my sensing.

There will be a reckoning--an "election of reckoning," to modify a phrase--for the Dems.  Think what happened 40 years ago with the Republicans.  The pendulum has almost completed its arc back to the other side.

When you add your monthly premiums to the annual out of pocket, it all seems to average about $10,000 per year you have to cough up before your insurance kicks in.

Or am I not understanding how this thing is supposed to work :???:

I'm not sure exactly how it works, I do know the last time I had a plan with a deductible of $1000 the only thing they would pay for was a wellness visit, until I hit $1000. So when I was sick and saw the doctor I had to pay for the full visit.

The other thing I have noticed on these plans is even after you reach your deductible you still get 20% of the bill.
