(AP) Calif. Sheriff's deputies shoot, kill 13-year-old
SANTA ROSA, Calif.
Northern California sheriff's officials and family members say deputies shot and killed a 13-year-old boy who was carrying a replica assault weapon.

Two Sonoma County deputies saw the boy walking with the replica weapon around 3 p.m. Tuesday in Santa Rosa. Lt. Dennis O'Leary says they repeatedly ordered him to drop what appeared to be a rifle before firing several rounds.

The boy fell to the ground. Deputies handcuffed him and began administering first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. O'Leary says deputies also found a plastic handgun in his waistband.

The boy's father, Rodrigo Lopez, told the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa (http://bit.ly/1h8bWbt) the victim was his 13-year-old son, Andy.

The deputies have not been identified.

In one's back yard is one thing.  Walking around on the street is quite another.

And as you know, some of these Airsoft guns can look pretty darned realistic at first glance.  To be running around with one and then not IMMEDIATELY obey the orders of the officers, well, while his death is tragic, it certainly isn't on the cops in this case.  But I will say I'm sure they're having to deal with a lot of anguish right about now.

When I was 13 I was walking down the street with real guns on my way to go hunting! Of course I was taught to respect my elders and especially police so I would obey their commands instantly. That said I would think they would be able to tell it was a youngster and it seems the police all over country are a little trigger happy!

Does that kid

look like he needs this gun?

Bottom line, boys and girls, when they look like the real thing, you MUST assume that they are until proven otherwise.  PERIOD.

If you're carrying a toy gun or a real gun and the cops tell you to drop it, you do it.  Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Pictures seem to be changing.

Interesting.

But my point stands.  A lot of Airsoft guns look VERY realistic.

Too realistic, IMO.

According to this news article  (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2473573/Andy-Lopez-California-teen-13-carrying-toy-rifle-shot-dead-deputies.html) on the story, this is the toy gun the boy had in his possession:

quite realistic looking and I can't blame the Cops for their actions if they repeatedly demanded him to drop the weapon.

A report I heard on the radio this morning said the boys father only speaks Spanish, so I'm sure a language barrier plays into the tragedy, but seriously, if you are carrying a weapon or a facsimilie of a weapon and a Cop is yelling at you in a foreign language and has his gun drawn, wouldn't self preservation kick in and cause you to drop the object and raise your hands?

Holy crap that does look real.  Yeh the only thing that didn't get all pissed at the cops is that they told him to put it down multiple times and he didn't.  Did he even say anything? "No Hablas Espanol"?

I do bet those cops are going to be seriously damaged mentally from this.

Another thing about the toy gun, I thought that we (Cali) made it so they had to have a florescent orange painted muzzle.  :???:

They are VERY easy to remove.  My son removed his and I whipped his ass.

Some things do bother me about this. Was he pointing the gun at the cops, at the ground, or up in the air?  Did they try to approach him to take the gun if he wasn't pointing it at them?

I'm not defending anyone by asking...but have you seen a picture of this kid? He doesn't look 13...he doesn't look like an adult either. It's so hard to tell how old kids are these days...  :(

if the picture of the toy AK-47 is accurate, I don't fault the Cops even if he wasn't pointing the gun at anybody.  It woudln't take much for the kid to bring the gun up while depressing the trigger and causing alot of harm to anyone in the vicinity before the Cops could respond and bring him down.

As you said earlier in this thread, "play stupid games, win stupid prizes"

Sounds justified if this is true.

Yep, he won a stupid prize.

The cops that shot the kid are going to be traumatized by this forever too.

Even if they couldn't tell if it was a real weapon or not, finding out that it wasn't AND he was only 13yo, will mess with their heads...

I worked with a guy who always wanted to be a police officer. He got his wish, became an officer for the local police department.

After being on the force for over a year, One night about midnight he got a call that a man with a gun was outside a 7-11 store. This cop pulled up and had a gun pointed directly at him.

He pulled his weapon and fired. Killed a 12 year old boy with a toy gun.

Don't know where he is now but he quit the force even after being found not at fault.

I can't imagine how he is mentally.
