trouble shooting the f****e

Freezer part is working fine. Lower part, the f****e, has stopped cooling.

On googling, I find out that cold air goes from freezer to f****e via a vent, which might be plugged by frost or something.

Found the vent. Some air is passing through, but it's not really cold.

Any other possibilities?

First up, the always-helpful Skippy from New York City:

1. Gotta give it a full defrost and inspect.

Assuming this is not a frost free f****e, I've seen ports between top and bottom freeze up and not work until a full thaw-down was conducted, which can take a couple days.

Need make and model and serial number which often indicated date of manufacture.

2. how do I know if it's a frost free f****e?

I didn't buy the thing; it came with apartment.

At this point I risk losing a major stash of stuff I've put up from the summer bounty. Jams, berries, etc. Argh!

3. More or less, if it's post-1990 it's frost free.

I think today they all are. I think in 1990 it was a luxury.

You can tell by whether or not ice builds up in the freezer or not.

If you've had this f****e for four months or longer, you'll know that it either does or doesn't build up ice.

OTOH, if this is a new unit to you, you might have to wait and see.

Use of "unit" makes Skippy sound like an appliance salesman.

4. there was a little ice on the back wall of the freezer. Nothing like the old kind though.

I defrosted it all day, put bowls of hot water in, used a blow dryer to dry it out.

5. Sounds like an older unit. It has just one compressor.

If it has just one compressor and the freezer side works but the f****e doesn't, there's a good chance of a blockage.

Once compressor runs the whole show, if the compressor's bad then nothing works, if only the freezer works it could be a blockage, even a scrap of broccoli can do it.

That last time I saw this problem was with a upper freezer/lower f****e unit, and I had to remove the outside back panel and the back panel inside of the freezer part.

In the center was a port that was clogged.

6. Frost free refrigerators have heaters in them

They are used to defrost the freezer, and they burn out. The first symptom is that the non-freezer part becomes warm. The ice buildup in the freezer will not show up, because it is inside the walls of the freezer section, but it prevents the cold air from blowing into the non-freezer compartment. Odds are your heaters have failed.

Finally.....a primitive who knows how to spell the word.

This "unit" is probably whatever was left behind in that abandoned bodega where the homeless grasswipe squats.

When I was a kid we had a "unit" with a little freezer compartment inside the refrigerator.

In the 60s we got one with a separate freezer on top. I doubt DUmmy grasswipe Judy has one any newer than the 60s.

Our resident mole from the DUmp is apparently an appliance repairman. Nothing wrong with that.

Likely a decomposing rat in the vent.  At least one hopes.

Well, I'm wondering why she just doesn't ask the landlord.

<<<when has a question about something here, asks the landlord.

That is, unless Judy's trying to avoid him for some reason.....

I'm still new to Skippy from New York City; he attracted my attention when he complained about a minor casual meaningless error I'd made on the primitive name-changes for 2009.

I thought, "geezuz, man, I deal with 3,500 primitives, and am likely to goof once in a while.....and besides, it's been so long that it doesn't matter any more."  (The name-changes had been made in early 2009; it was earlier this year, four years later, that he bitched about it.)

I suspect Skippy in real life is either an architect or an interior decorator, and that he worked his way through college either selling or repairing household items.  I'm not 100% sure on this, but am reasonably confident--about 85% confident--that this is the case.

Remember, Skippy from New York City actually allegedly lives in San Francisco, and one can reasonably guess what that means.

Judy, you say your refrigerator isn't keeping cool?  That's easy.  It's not wearing enough coats.  Put another two or three on it, and it should be fine.

Well, it probably means he's queer, though it's a little unusual to hear of a queer who knows something useful like how to fix a refrigerator.

He's also a mole here, as he once demonstrated by posting a DUmp screen cap while he was logged
on there as NYC_SKP. For whatever reason, he's protected.

That is such superb DUmmitude...not even bothering to look at the posted picture.
