NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Something stinks in upper Manhattan.

Residents claim skunks have invaded Inwood and Washington Heights, roaming the streets surrounding Fort Tryon Park and stinking up the neighborhood.

“I tell my friends down in midtown or Hells Kitchen that there’s a skunk problem up here and they don’t believe it,” resident Mark Bailey said. “They’re in front of every building…they’re not just in the parks, they’re all over.”

“As far as I am concerned, one is too many,” resident Aaron Frischberg said. “When the windows are open there is a distinct odor of polecat ‘juice.’”

“I haven’t seen them, but I smell them all over the place,” deliveryman Hector Valentin said. “It’s actually not scary, but stinky.”

You don't know how glad this makes me. :-) O-) :yahoo:

Blaming the stink on one of natures poor little defenseless critters when the problem is to many democrat voters in the area.

I got an odors call late one night  and as soon as I got out of the service van I caught to odor of a skunk. I went in to ck the unit and talk to the cust. I explained what he was smelling was a skunk. He tells me he is from NYC and has no idea what a skunk smells like. So I did a little investigation and found the skunk under the back deck. I told the cust where it was and told him they were docile animals and all he had to do was go under there and shoo him out with a broom. Then I made a hasty retreat!

Aw.  Poor skunks.  Hey, NYC... Skunks were there first!  You must co-exist with them!

(The same crap we get here in the West from ignorant urbanites.  Note that I said the ignorant ones, please.)

You know, living here in New Hampshire, there's no shortage of skunks around, particularly in fall.

Having frequently run across them at night (they are obviously nocturnal), when both of you are surprised, as in, walking from my car to my front door and there's one rooting around underneath my deck...its like "Yikes!...Oh, Hello!"  However, they are really docile  At least a dozen times I've encountered them over the years and I've never been sprayed, to the point where now I just ignore the little stinker and head in the house without bothering.

I did have my dog get sprayed once, though.  Two days before Halloween he came in from the back yard and the smell was like a baseball bat hitting you in the face.  I described it to friends like ammonia--it actually burned my nostrils.

I've had both a dog and cat get sprayed.  It's so gross, even after bathing them, it still takes days to get the smell out.

Skunks are active at night.  More than once I've been woken up by the smell getting into the house.

For some reason they're attracted to crawl spaces. Have more than once had to run 'em out from under the house. If ya don't, you'll never get any sleep or you'll have a dog ya can't stand for days!

They've never been aggressive. They take off once confronted by any loud noise.

Just try to keep them facing you, when they turn their back and raise their tail, OH Boy.

Some people love the baby skunks, they take them to the VETS. get the glands removed, spayed or neutered and treat them like cats.

I do not know if they can be litter trained or if there is a vaccine against rabies for them but they are a show stopper when at a party a pet skunk comes wandering into the room.     Even with glands removed they still have this odd odor that will stick to leather clothing like a Male cat sprayed on it.
