How Gender and Queer Studies Ruined My Life.
Posted by one mean sheath on Sat Jun-21-08 01:18 PM

That's the working title for my directed study project for my senior project (I'm a Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies major and GLBT minor).
Full title (to give a little more detail) is - How Gender and Queer Studies Ruined My Life: The Roles of TV Shows and Advertising in the Perpetuation and Maintenance of Gender roles, the Sex Binary, and the Garbage that is Heteronormativity.

The idea behind it is that I'm a television junkie. There I said it. But ever since I got more into women's, gender, and queer studies, I become enraged every time I turn on the television. So I'm going to kind of keep tally of how and how often traditional gender roles/sex binary/heteronormativity/transphobia/etc... show up on television and their roles in oppression and exclusion of the queer community and in the brainwashing from day one of everyone in the country. Holy normalization, Batman.

So! Thoughts, comments, thumbs up, thumbs down.... Go!

Whiskey.  Tango.  Foxtrot.

You can get a degree in Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies?!  You can minor in GLBT?!

Giant Legume Bartering Tournament, I think.  It's like curling.  Or that French game where they throw heavy metals balls at the grass.  One of those "sports" that doesn't even show up on ESPN2.

I will take worthless degrees for $1000 Alex. :mental:

GLBT is a Grape, lettuce, bacon, and tuna sandwich.

Once the OP graduates there will be a barrage of threads whining about not finding a job. Of course this will be due to the evil corporate economy and absolutely no fault of He/She/It's own. Is this a bachelor's degree? What are we talking here? 80 grand?

Loser!

BTW. It's Gay Lesbian Bi Transgendered. You should never mix grapes and bacon IMHO.

Hell, I thought every college student majored in "sex". Do they only give the queer ones and the oddball ones degrees for it?

1.  google http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=role+of+television+in+maintenance+of+gender+roles&spell=1

2. cut and paste

3.  get degree

4.  practice the phrase 'would you like fries with that?'

I'm in a bit of a glass house here, with a degree in English and everything, but what kind of living does the OP expect to make with the above degree?

Is there a company in the country who would hire someone with that degree??

You expect this person to get a job so soon? Away with your filthy talk of economic reality.  :lmao:

They will have to spend a few more years getting a masters and a PhD and then they will be ready to start thinking about appling to be a professor, so that the whole self perpetuating cycle of nonsense can begin again.

I have many questions . How does one even get a degree in something like this ? How does one write a thesis ? By observing people In their natural habitats like some sort of San Francisco based Dian Fossey or Jane Goodall ?

Will there be a movie ? "Bears in The Smog :The story of one mean sheath" ?

And finally, can one have a more specialized degree in the field, Such as an MA in "Hawt Internet Lesbians" ?

Is there a company in the country who would hire someone with that degree??

It'll move to Berkley, and get rich.
