'Family Glitch' In Health Law Could Be Painful
WASHINGTON — A so-called "family glitch" in the 2010 health care law threatens to cost some families thousands of dollars in health insurance costs and leave up to 500,000 children without coverage, insurance and health care analysts say.

That's unless Congress fixes the problem, which seems unlikely given the House's latest move Friday to strip funding from the law, which is also called the Affordable Care Act.

Congress defined "affordable" as 9.5% or less of an employee's wages, mostly to make sure people did not leave their workplace plans for subsidized coverage through the exchanges. But the "error" was that it only applies to the employee — and not his or her family. So, if an employer offers a woman affordable insurance, but doesn't provide it for her family, they cannot get subsidized help through the state health exchanges.

That can make a huge difference; the Kaiser Family Foundation said an average plan for an individual is about $5,600, but it goes up to $15,700 for families. Most employers help out with those costs, but not all.

"We saw this two-and-a-half years ago and thought, 'Has anyone else noticed this?'" said Kosali Simon, a professor of public affairs at Indiana University who specializes in health economics. "Everyone said, 'No, no. You must be wrong.' But we weren't, and that's going to leave a lot of people out."

2. We definitely have this issue - 21% of income goes toward premiums

for our medical insurance. Blech! And for a few reasons, we will not be allowed into the Marketplace next month. A huge disappointment.

No, no, no - you must be wrong. Nancy would never do this to us...

19. You misunderstood

If that much of income is going toward premiums then you can buy at the exchange. those under that % can not.

whoops...

Quote
Turn CO Blue (3,454 posts)
21. Nope. I don't misunderstand

For example, if our adult daughter and I are taken out of the equation, hubby (the actual employee and the group member) would only pay 7% of his income - not high enough to be considered eligible for the exchange. They only look at the group member's percentage to determine eligibility - not the total amount of premiums for the whole family each month. Hence, calling it the "family glitch" - that they conveniently forgot that the employee/first group member's rate is often heavily discounted and the profit made up by overcharging the premium rates for the next 2-4 members of the family. And I am not allowed to seek the exchange on my own, because my husband has access to a group plan; that is the first question.

The truth is starting to sink in...

8. Obama's job was MANDATES. Everything else was secondary to this...

Thanks to Obamacare, every American -- as the price of citizenship -- must purchase one of these plans. It doesn't matter what it costs, it doesn't matter how little it covers, it doesn't matter whether you cannot afford it, it doesn't matter how poorly they treat you, it doesn't matter if they take your money and copays, then laugh in your face and refuse to fork over one thin dime in pay outs...

You still have to send them your check. Every month. They are the only industry in American HISTORY with a lock like that. You'll give them your money or the Federal government will come after you. Today with fines, tomorrow who knows.

Liar, liar - pants on fire

35. Because they are silly...

I get it. You think Obamacare is swell. Undoubtedly you think that way because YOU happen to be one of those people who benefit from it. That's nice for you, but there are tens of millions of us who will not be so lucky. We were already screwed by poverty and a lack of healthcare access, and now we are screwed more.

Apparently Obama thinks I have an extra five thousand a year just lying around that I can afford to send off to some insurance company, and another five thousand or so to cover co-pays and deductibles should I actually get sick. He apparently believes this, and many wealthy Democrats apparently agree, because that's what this piece of shit law is going to cost me and most of what I see here is people cheering this on like it's some kind of victory.

Or, I can just pay the fine.

Obama's Poverty Fine.

And this is what is going to happen. Come October and November tens of millions of people are going to turn on their news and discover that the only thing Obamacare is giving them is one more bill they cannot even begin to pay. Those with money get more, and those without get fined.

Ah - I am sure that we can fix it at the ballot box...

4. Not if Dems take back House and get filibuster proof Senate

Which could happen if Ted Cruz has his way. If the Republicans end up shutting down the Government over their efforts to defund Obamacare then the Democrats may very well take back the House and, at a minimum, keep a majority in the Senate. That is one way I see that this "glitch" could be fixed.

6. The question is if the ACA will influence people to vote for or against Democrats.

Is the pitch "yes we screwed up earlier so vote for us so we can fix our mistakes" a successful one? Will this program make people more friendly towards government programs or less?

7. This is exactly why I'm skeptical of people who triumphantly claim

all these mistakes were a grand ruse to drive us to single-payer. I think, if anything, this generated enough distrust to put SP that much further out of reach if not give the senate to the GOP next year.

Ya think?

17. Yes, originally small businesses were on board

So far implementation has been very disappointing for them, and many are going to see increases in premiums next year.

I'm afraid some of the trust and credibility is gone, not to return for a decade.

It doesn't help that half the law is not now being enforced.

Ya think (part 2)?

Suddenly discover that our party has now added a new multi-hundred dollar bill to their burden they are going to freak the **** out.

The Senate bill was never supposed to become law, much of this would have been ironed up in a conference if not for the intransigence of Republicans.

Riiiiiight.

Here's a novel idea for you to pass on to your Dem lawmakers, DUmbshit trichomonas: "Don't pass a bill if you don't want it to become a law." Didn't any of you DUmb mother****ers pay attention to "Schoolhouse Rock"?

My favorite post of the thread.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed; if you go to any obamacare article on sites that allow both views (Politico, TheHill, yahoo, etc.), there always seems to be one paid hack in the comments section, running around, hogging all the post space, cheerleading this piece of shit.  It gets really annoying.  I mentioned the Family Glitch to one of these trolls, and he asked "what's the Family Glitch?"  I just told him he'd better look it up.

This Family Glitch is MAJOR ****ING PROBLEM.

I think it came about because the morons who wrote it were DINK types who don't actually raise a "family" and can't imagine doing so.

Watch for this one as Obamacare really starts to crash and burn hard.  I'm sure we'll see this talking point again and again: "Those Republicans were so mean that we had to use parliamentary procedures to get this important bill passed!  We never had a chance to debate and tweak it properly!" assuming that no one will remember Repubs were told to go to the back of the bus and had nothing to say at all.

You know it is coming because donks = good and GOP = bad, damn the facts. Sadly, stupid voters (democrat) will believe this because it will be 24/7/365 from the DNC propaganda arm, the media.

85% of Americans were satisfied/happy with their health care prior to the passing of this socialist monstrosity. This was done to give 30 million people insurance because FAIRNESS. Well the fairness is gong to be that everyone but special groups that fund donks and the government people (almost wrote workers) will be VERY dissatisfied. Oh and there will still be almost 20 million still uninsured.

Like all socialist policies said to make things fair, it always equals everybody but a small few are equally miserable. It is always sold as bringing people up which is impossible. In reality the only way to make people equal is to bring them down.

OAN, IIRC the cACA bill had 3000 pages of things like "as the Secretary DHS deems...." So the POS law let a total DUchebag of a person, Seibillious, put dot the Is and cross the Ts.
