How many of you feel worse off than you did 5 years ago?

Will this country ever recover from the Bush years? There are fewer jobs now. Most new jobs are part time (and of course, everyone blames Obamacare). The pay rate has stayed level, or has gone down. So tell me, less jobs, equal or less pay than before, less hours? The middle class is disappearing at an alarming rate. What happened to the American dream? And now the GOP wants to cut billions from the less fortunate. OMG, when will this stop?

My salary has decreased drastically in the past 5 years. Some because of lack of jobs, some because of my age and trying to find a job. I am currently unemployed again, and have been looking for months. I had been doing IT contract work since 2007, and even that has been hard to come by lately. When I apply for a $10.00 and hour job, they see my previous salaries and trash my application. I've been rejected many of times in the past two months for these types of jobs. My goal is just to survive until retirement. If it weren't for my wife still being employed, we would be on food stamps, and lose everything we own. She's going to retire soon, as her company is putting pressure on her to leave. Once that happens, I'm afraid we'll be in the soup lines like the millions of people are now. 10 years ago, I was on a pretty good track to survive until retirement. Over the years any savings we had has dwindled down to nothing. Now it looks bleak, and I don't know if we'll make it. The economy is still in disarray, and I don't see a fix anytime soon. What has happened to the American dream? Is it still out there?

Please share your thoughts on this as I'm sure others have encountered this , especially in the age group above 50.

It's the Limbaugh theorem, 0bama has not really been in charge the last 5 years.

1. There are millions and millions of us out there, rapidly losing hope as we lose everything we worked

for over a lifetime. It's a bit like cancer, we're slightly ashamed to talk about it and others don't want to lest it be them next time.

The problem is only worse by the fact that its "our" party that's in the White House and the Senate, so we are reluctant to even demand anything substantially change there.

I just don't know what to do.

It could be worst (using worst instead of worse so the DUmmies can understand), the democrats could have had the house for all of the past 5 years. You think things are bad now, just imagine if the dems were able to pass everything else they wanted to go along with 0bamacare.

2. Either do I

I sit at my PC every day for hours trying to find a job. All of my job submissions/rejections are kept in a folder. It's over 700 and counting, in 3 months. JUST to find ONE job!!!

That's your problem you sit at your PC all day long. I realize that you can apply for jobs online, but I bet if you left your house and went in and put in applications in person it would increase your chances.

3. I feel worse. I haven't had a regular job for three years come next month.

I thought 0bama saved the economy.

6. I am financially worse off than 5 years ago.

My feelings and life events this time span are too complex to labor on about, but my financial situation has been a slow, demoralizing grind.

My wife died in 2009 and that has been very difficult, making financial concerns a bit secondary. But I still have to eat, pay the rent and keep going.

I wasn't earning very high wages as a lab tech before the economic collapse, and afterwards the Governor ordered a wage freeze which covered six years. The union that represents my job title finally "won" us a 2% raise to be implemented, but that is mostly consumed by an increased pension burden. Not that that matters anymore as I am newly unemployed.

I am 56 years old, reasonably fit and have some savings, so I'm staying positive about finding work and getting by. I am rather depending on the ACA to take some of the pressure off. Needless to say, I am quite put out by the Republican party's latest shenanigans.

10. I feel better and worse

better because at least Bush is no longer President

worse because now his tax cuts are permanent

better because working full time since October 2011 gives me more money

worse because working full time gives me less time

better because I am 3.5 years away from retirement

worse because I am now over 50

worse because in 2008 I had a Democratic Congresswoman and Democratic Speaker of the House, and now both are Republicans

worse because in 2008 I had a Democratic State Senator and Democratic Governor and now far right conservatives have won sweeping victories and Brownback has brought Reaganomics to the state level.

Wait I could have sworn the tax cuts were taken away from those evil rich people. Isn't that enough for you DUmmies? Do you want higher taxes on everyone now?

15. sorry to hear so many are struggling

I too re entered the job market at age 50

There is no comparison between the two periods for me.

Bush's crashes wiped me out twice.

Under Obama things are prospering but I get major setbacks every time the Republicans come close to shutting down the government.

Yep those pesky repukes are all to blame.

23. Much worse off

In the past five years, my income has been cut to 1/3 what it was before the 2008 crash. I'm now under poverty level. I had to give up the "luxury" of health insurance. Self-employed, 61, and hanging by a thread. Utilities and food keep going up though. I turn down the thermostat to 60 degrees to save money, then they raise the rates, so now I pay as much to be cold as I used to pay to be warm.

I stupidly thought when Obama was elected the first time that everything would now be all right. It's only gotten worse.

Maybe I'll be able to afford health insurance on the exchanges, but I doubt I could also afford the copays and deductibles, so what use is it?? I'm resigned to dying if something major happens. I just hope it's very quick and painless.

It does my heart well so see these idiots suffering under the policies of those who they put in office. I'm sad for the rest of country who has to suffer along with them, but at least decent civilized people always find a way to make it because we are willing to do crazy things like actual work.

If it wasn't for the decent civilized people of this country still hard at work the whole system would of collapsed a long ago. Fortunately there are intelligent hard working folks out there who can prosper despite the major attempts by our government to destroy us all. True Americans are stubborn people who can find ways around obstacles that would hold most men down.

Bottom line is that the Bush recession was far better for the 99% than the Obama "so called" recovery.

More people were working.
Less people were on food stamps.
More household wealth.
Lower health care insurance premiums.
Lower food cost.
Lower gas and electricity cost.
Higher unemployment for all but particularly for blacks now.
More people in poverty now.
Detroit went bankrupt.

I could go on all day.

We got all of this by borrowing over $7 trillion ($7,000,000,000,000.00) from our children's future.

Obama is not the guy to make communism/socialism/fascism/progressivism either.

I just wish Detroit had gone bankrupt in October of last year. Would have shut up 0bama about his claims of Romney wanting Detroit to go bankrupt and flattened the tires of his "I saved Detroit" argument.

Stupid bullheaded DUmmy prefers death to admitting he/she/it was wrong about Obama.  Just admit that you were wrong in supporting the worthless jackass Obama.  Hell, you don't even have to admit that you were wrong, you can say that he lied and tricked you and you'd be right.

You know, I actually "feel" better off than I did 5 years ago. Sure the joints and muscles hurt more but the pain I feel for my country and the younger generations is beginning to diminish somewhat. 3 and 1/2 years from now I'll probably be feeling even better. Hell, I know I will.

Late one night, when we were all in bed,

And when the cow kicked it over, she winked her eye and said,
"There'll be a HOT time on the old town tonight."

It's coming pretty fast. As of right now, every Chicago citizen owes $68,000 just to fun the public employees that are retired. Average Chicagoan makes around $28K. Oh OH Chicago teachers just got a big raise so that should help with retirement costs. Productive flight out of Chicago is going to dramatically accelerate.

The missus and I are better off tan we were five years ago, despite living in Massachusetstan under an Obama economy.

Its because the missus and I take the initiative to jump into better paying work, or work with a longer shelf-life (read as: not able to outsource). Neither of us work what we studied in college., and neither of us live extravagant lifestyles.

So, we will survive the Oconomy. How about you, beggar primitives ?

If the economy, or, let me speak in primitive terms, the conomy, was so bad in '06 under Bush, you ****ing idiots would have ran on it. Did you? No. You ran on the war. ....we're still in one and about to get in another...not to mention Egypt and Libya. Our economy started sucking ass in October of '07, 9 months after Dims took control of Congress. When it was all Republican-controlled, the economy was rolling with 4.4% unemployment, and that was after 9/11, the tech bubble bust, and corporate scandals like Enron. Bush knew how to stimulate an economy....namely by not being a ****ing anti-business Communist. He knew that to stimulate an economy meant that you remove barriers. Obama is busy building barriers the size of the Great Wall. Your blind loyalty to party makes you idiots that refuse to deviate from your insane ideology.

It goes deeper than that. It's a mental condition. A problem with ideologues. They blame Bush, the President, when the economy was shit....which happened after Dims took control of Congress, not Congress, now they blame the Republican 1/2 of Congress when the shit is the same, but the President is a Democrat. The moral of the story here is that for them, the Republican is always to blame. Obama could have a bunch of nuns marched out of the most charitable orphanage in the nation and personally behead them all and they'd find a way to praise Obama, and blame Republicans and Bush. It's a SERIOUS mental illness. I blame Nixon and Reagan. I think it was them that defunded a lot of the mental institutions. 4/5ths of the people posting on DU right now, and 6/10ths of the Dims in office would definitely qualify for committal.

They're actually making a case of Obama's ineptness and incompetence. They're just too stupid to admit it. To me it's neither. It's by design. ....of course, they won't admit that either as they think socialism actually works, regardless of the hundreds of times it's been tried dating back to William Bradford.

Oh dear DUchebags, just wait until you get your new Obama HellCare package.

ECONOMIC PAIN:
Premiums are going to double.
Co-pays may triple.
Deductibles may quadrupole.
Employee contributions will quadrupole, if even offered.
Spouses will be dropped from employer plans.

If people are forced to pay more for less they will be using it more so get ready for the other side of the smartest man in history's plan.

TREATMENT PAIN:
Wait times for appointments will be greatly increased. Week waits will now be months wait.
Surgery scheduling will go from weeks to months, many months.
More doctors will go to concierge service. For DUche lurkers that means not available to you.
There will be a severe doctor shortage. This will be due to much more demand, concierge service, and experienced doctors taking early retirement.
Former services performed by a doctor will now be done by PAs. Less experience but same cost.
Many treatments will just not be n the menu anymore.
Get used to going to clinics and waiting.
Those on Medicare will have $70 billion less each and every year. Somehow this fixes the medicare problem.

All of this pain to get 30 million people insured of which only 12 million will actually get insured.

All of this pain to get 30 million people insured of which only 12 million will actually get insured.

...but it's for the chillrin.....we have to pass it to find out what's in it.....and the chillirin can't read it either.

Just saying some stupid stuff......sounded like a democrat didn't I?

Nanzi told us this would be great because now you could write a book, make a painting or just jack off all day and not worry about having a job with health insurance. Pelousey says alot of stupid shit and she was third in line to the presidency. Scary.

But the problem is, the primitives haven't yet felt enough pain.

They deserve a great deal more pain than this.

This is the crux of the entire problem.  Our free (was kinda sorta) market society has taken the pain away.  The quote/unquote "poor" here, are better off than over 50% of the rest of the planet.  Unemployment benefits alone put them over 50% of the rest of the planet.  If the population at large felt just 1/2 the pain of the Roosevelt Depression, heads would be rolling in DC, Hussien would be a historical footnote and we could get back on track.

However........

I wouldn't say "However."  The Dems seem bound and determined to bring the US back to those days.  We'll see just how good things are for them, then.  Not saying that it will happen that way, but, ya never know!

I can honestly say there hasn't been a single year since the onset of the Reagan Boom when I haven't felt better off than the preceding year. Not one. On paper there are temporary fluctuations due to market forces, both negative and positive, but if you connect the dots, read the arcs, and recognize the trends, it has been unbroken upward prosperity.

I still get my brokerage statements on paper. Whenever I read one, I just smile and say, "Bush's fault." I hope that makes DUmmies feel bad.
