The part that I object to is the round watermelon.

I remember watermelons being oblong -- sorta like a huge, thick zucchini.

When the hell did they turn round? :shrug:

Bout them watermelons, y'all ain't looking for em in the right place, I see them all the time. However, I do notice that the smaller round ones are more prevalent. I like the yellow ones myself. Much sweeter, except for the above mentioned cannonballs.

There was a method to growing the best cannonballs. The poor sand hills of NC and SC won't even grow a decent tree unless it's a long leaf pine with a deep tap root. Nothing but Black Jacks(scrub oaks) grow there. They used to roughly brush over those scrub oaks with a bulldozer and then for 2 years they would plant cannonball watermelons. Those were the sweetest watermelons I ever had. Put one in the fridge the night before you wanted to eat it and cut it about 3 o'clock the next afternoon and it was pure heaven.

They look just like red watermelons, but they are yellow inside. Tasty Tasty!

Simple solution:

WATERMELON PICKLES

Clean almost all the pink from the watermelon rind, and remove the thin green outer skin.
Cut the rind into "pickle sized chunks". Cook the chunks of rind in salt water until tender (one teaspoon salt to one quart water).

Drain and cook in the syrup until the chunks becomes clear in the syrup.

Syrup:
3 c. sugar
2 c. vinegar
1 c. water
1 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. cinnamon
